Every year, many people lose their lives from choking on food. Many of those lives could have been saved in such a situation if the people around them had learned a simple and effective technique .
When someone starts to choke, he’ll put his hands to his throat . The first thing to do is ask him, “Are you choking?” If he can speak, cough or breathe, he is not choking. If he can’t, stand behind him and put your arms around his waist .
With one hand, make a fist . Place the thumb side of the fist against his abdomen above the belly button and below the ribs . Put your other hand over the fist and give quick upward thrusts into his abdomen. Continue giving abdominal thrusts until he starts to breathe , or until he becomes unconscious .
If he becomes unconscious, lay him down on his back and call for help.
Tilt his head up and try to remove the object with your finger (be careful not to push the object in further by accident). Breathe into his mouth. If the breaths do not go in, repeat abdominal thrusts and continue until the object comes out and he starts breathing again. Then he should see a doctor immediately to make sure there are no other problems.

Unit 3 How to Save a Life
Abdominal thrusts should not be used on a pregnant woman. Instead, hold your hands higher and press on top of her rib cage . Do not use abdominal thrusts on small children. Hold the child face down on your knees and gently support his head with one hand. Using a cupped hand, give the child five back blows between the shoulders. If the object is still not removed, turn the child over and give five chest thrusts using three fingers. Repeat until the object is removed or emergency help arrives.
Remember, this lesson contains only basic advice for helping people who are choking. Always ask people who are well-trained for help in an emergency or dial 119.
