AEROJET ROCKETDYNE ROUTING INSTRUCTIONS
BACKGROUND:
The instructions in this Guide supersede and take precedence over all previous routing instructions and guidelines.
Any questions concerning these instructions should be directed to Aerojet Rocketdyne, (AR) Inc. Traffic
Management personnel at the telephone numbers listed in Paragraph II. Contact the personnel listed for the
receiving AR location.
APPLICATION:
These instructions apply to all inbound and 3rd party shipments of parts, data, material and tooling (“goods”) to
Aerojet Rocketdyne sites or other destination specified in the purchase order issued by Aerojet Rocketdyne.
These instructions apply to both purchase orders and voucher purchase orders.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Use only the selected carriers in the Shipment Routing Guide
Set up all inbound shipments FOB Origin
Set up all outbound shipments FOB Destination
Set up all drop shipments Third party FOB Origin
Do not declare a value (It costs Money)
Do not insure shipments
**NOTICE**
Deviations to these instructions must be approved by Aerojet Rocketdyne Transportation
Management
Shipping authority’s failure to comply with these instructions may result in liability for excess
freight charges and responsibility for loss and/or damage, and a $100.00 administrative
expense.
DEFINITIONS
Self Insurance- Setting aside money to cover possible losses rather than purchasing an outside insurance
policy…………………………………………… Aerojet Rocketdyne is self-insured
Declared Value- The value of goods declared to the carrier by the shipper for the “purposes of determining
charges” and establishing the liability of the carrier.
Free on Board (FOB) - Legal term used to designate the place at which the transfer of ownership
(Title of Goods) takes place. The FOB point is specified by the Buyer in the purchase order. Use of this term
assures AR control and reduction of transportation costs.
FOB Origin - Transfer of ownership occurs at Seller’s point of loading. Aerojet Rocketdyne designates the carrier
and is responsible for (i) freight costs and (ii) loss and/or damage of goods. Seller must ship using the carrier
designated by Aerojet Rocketdyne as outlined in these instructions.
FOB Destination - Transfer of ownership occurs at the Aerojet Rocketdyne designated receiving dock. Aerojet
Rocketdyne selects the carrier and is responsible for freight costs. Aerojet Rocketdyne is responsible for loss
and/or damage to goods while in transit. Insurance responsibility rests with Aerojet Rocketdyne.

Revised 04/16/14
Third Party Billing for FOB Origin Drop Shipments: Shipment is made from Seller to a non-Aerojet
Rocketdyne, destination and is invoiced to Aerojet Rocketdyne. Aerojet Rocketdyne will pay for the shipping, not
the Shipper or Receiver.
Purchase Order: Contractual document issued by a Buyer/Delegate Buyer for the acquisition of goods or a
voucher purchase order issued for the receipt of goods (e.g., customer furnished material).
Seller: Supplier awarded the purchase order, or the entity providing goods under a voucher purchase order.
Oversize shipments: Items weighing greater than 5000 lbs. or exceeds 96 inches in width or depth
SHIPPING TIPS:
1. Plan your shipments. This will give you transit time and affords you to opportunity to run your
shipments on the ground if appropriate.

Example:
$300 spent on an air shipment = $100 spent on ground transportation.
$200 savings or 66% reduction in cost
2. Know your service levels and buy standard service wherever possible. It will arrive on the same day and
is 20% cheaper.

Example:
Priority Overnight will get a shipment to you next day by 10:30 am
Standard Overnight will get the same shipment to you 4 and 1/2 hours later by 3:00pm
In the majority of cases the carrier will deliver 3:00pm shipments along with 10:30 shipments to save a
second trip
3. Know your receiving hours of operation for Rocketdyne Aerojet plants: contact the personnel listed in
paragraph II for the receiving location.



Socorro is closed Friday so if you ship overnight on Thursday it will not be delivered until Monday.
Aerojet Rocketdyne will be charged an additional fee for an attempted delivery.
Sacramento is closed every other Friday
Stennis Space Center is closed on Friday
4. Remember: Shipments tendered to a carrier Thursday and Friday for a Monday or later delivery, actually
have 4 days to travel (Carriers do not count Saturdays and Sundays as transit days) and will probably go
on ground transportation even if you book it airfreight. Make sure we are utilizing ground transportation
later in the week.
I.
SHIPMENT ROUTING INSTRUCTIONS
A. Determine process required for shipping.
1. Input Aerojet Rocketdyne’s purchase order in the reference field on the bill of lading
2. Size and weight of the items
a. Items weighing over 150 lbs. and/or exceeding 165 inches in girth are freight shipments
b. Items weighing 150 lbs. and under are parcel shipments
c. To compute girth: Measure the width of the package rounding to the nearest inch and multiply by
2. Measure the height of the package rounding to the nearest inch and multiply by 2. Add the
sum of both numbers to the length of the package and the result is the girth measurement.
3. Delivery Time Constraints (When is this to be delivered?)
2
Revised 04/16/14
4. Destination
a. Regional shipments approximately 500 mile radius) will usually travel by ground even if they are
sent next day air.
5. What is the fragility, item cost, criticality of the item?
a. Freight shipped LTL ground is subject to handling damage due to the numerous transfers
between trucks and terminals. LTL ground freight should be used only for robust materials such
as raw material, forgings and castings or for items that are packaged extremely well to withstand
the rigors of LTL ground freight. Finished goods, assemblies and high dollar value items should
be shipped either expedited 2 or 3 day air. If you have any questions contact the shipping
representative
b. Ground service should be used for parcel shipments as time allows, ensure packaging is
sufficient to protect the items shipped.
**IMPORTANT**
B. Los Angeles Local Routing (Chatsworth facility): For routing of material that is located in San Diego,
Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, Kern, Ventura , and Santa Barbara Counties California,
the shipper shall call Traffic Management at (818) 586-0143 or (818) 586-3081.
C. National and Regional Surface Routings:
Less than Truckload (LTL) ground shipments are typically more economical and the preferred method of
shipping for parcel shipments
1. 1 – 150 pound shipments (2-5 days transit time)
All areas and states – carrier account number required
 FedEx Ground
(800) 463-3339
Collect to AR
2. 151 – 7000 pound LTL ground freight shipments (for packages over 28 ft. long must call Traffic
Management at the receiving location) 2-5 days transit time.
 FedEx Freight Priority Service
or Economy service
(866) 393-4585
Collect to AR
 UPS Freight
(800) 333-7400
Collect to AR
3. 7000 pound or heavier shipments, oversize material, and other Full Truckload requirements, call AR
Traffic Management at the receiving facility (see paragraph II)
D. National and Regional Routing by Air:
1. Expedited shipments by air should be avoided. It is most cost effective when a 2 or 3 day service is
contracted
2. Call AR Traffic Management for all shipments where the package length exceeds 120 inches, and
the width or height exceeds 60 inches.
a.1 – 150 pounds shipped by air: (2 and 3 day shipments)
 FedEx Express (collect to AR) (800) 463-3339
 UPS (collect to AR) (800) 742-5877
