The Same Game By: Dawnylle Cerula MS, CCC-SLP Here is a fun way to increase your child’s vocabulary. You can use this game with synonyms, antonyms, or similes (comparisons using “like” or “as”). Goals: Learn synonyms and build vocabulary Materials: Nothing! (you may opt for a thesaurus) When/Where: You can play this game anytime you want to. How to play: Before playing the game, talk to your child about synonyms. Make sure he/she understands that synonyms are words that have similar meanings (big: huge, enormous, gigantic, etc). You can use any situation that you are in to play this game. For example, if you are outside, you could say “My hands are cold.” Then you and your child can come up with other ways to say the same thing using synonyms for “cold”. You can turn it into a small “contest” or game between you and your child to see who can come up with the most synonyms (or the most creative words) for ‘cold’.
