Important Features of the SMMC Program An Affiliation with the UCLA School of Medicine which allows interchange of housestaff and faculty between SMMC and other UCLA Teaching Hospitals. An active attending medical staff representing general Internal Medicine, subspecialties of Internal Medicine, Surgery, and its subspecialty areas, Family Practice, OB-GYN, and Pediatrics. Twelve hospital-based faculty in general Internal Medicine and its subspecialties. Active general medical teaching services, plus additional rotations in cardiology, Nephrology, Neurology, Pulmonary Medicine, and Ambulatory Medicine. Harbor-UCLA Medical Center is the site for subspecialty rotations in Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Hematology/Oncology and Infectious Diseases. An Emergency Department staffed by full-time physicians and housestaff who treat 30,000 patients each year. St Mary is the base Station for the Long Beach Paramedic System. A Regional trauma Center serving the Long Beach area as part of a countywide system. Clinical Diagnostic and Treatment Units which include a Cardiovascular Diagnostic laboratory, an active Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, a 13bed acute Hemodialysis Unit, a Pulmonary Physiology Laboratory, and thirty intensive care beds in four modules and a Geropsyciatry unit. A Neurodiagnostic Laboratory and a large Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Department. A Renal Transplantation Service. A full-service Clinical Laboratory and Pathology Department offering contemporary methods of diagnosis and an active commitment to education. A modern, well-equipped Radiology Department staffed by eight full-time radiologists with a special procedures diagnostic section, computed tomography units, and MRI capability. The Joseph E. Bellis Medical Library with a broad range of clinical and basic science journals and texts, Medline search, copying service, videotape materials, and interlibrary exchange with UCLA. The library has 27,000 books and subscribes to 450 journals. A 200 MHz Pentium personal computer, color scanner and laser printer are available for use. A progressive administration which is sensitive to the needs of the communityat-large and to the needs of its employees. Internal Medicine Residency Program The SMMC Training Program in Internal Medicine is affiliated with the UCLA School of Medicine, and the program director and other full-time faculty are appointed jointly by SMMC and UCLA. This affiliation allows a high degree of faculty and housestaff interchange between SMMC and other teaching hospitals within the UCLA system and enhances the various educational programs at SMMC. First graduate year. Two approved programs are offered through the National Resident Matching Program. Internal Medicine C (#102516): This program, which generally offers eight internships, includes rotations on general Internal Medicine services with private and non-private patients, the intensive care unit, and the emergency room. Interns are on call every third or fourth night. Internal Medicine C-Preliminary (#102515): Six internship positions are available for individuals seeking a one-year program in Internal Medicine prior to entering other disciplines. The rotations are identical to those outlined above. Second and third graduate years. Eight positions are offered in each of these years, with rotations on primary care and specialty services at both SMMC and Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. A typical schedule is outlined HERE . Fellowships in Internal Medicine subspecialties. One or two positions are available in Cardiology, Oncology, and Pulmonary Medicine programs sponsored by Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. Student clerkships. Clerkships of four weeks' duration are offered to Senior medical students from UCLA and other medical schools in general Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Nephrology, and Emergency Medicine. General Internal Medicine Teaching Services A teaching service consists of one resident, two interns, and the teaching attending physician for the month. Fourth year medical students from UCLA and other medical schools are often present as a part of the ward team. Regular teaching rounds are conducted by attending physicians and full-time faculty. Residents also rotate through the General Medicine Consultation Service at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. Subspecialty Rotations During the second and third years, residents rotate through subspecialty services in Pulmonary Medicine, Cardiology, Nephrology, and Neurology at SMMC. In addition, there are subspecialty rotations to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Hematology, Oncology, and Infectious Disease. Electives An elective rotation is scheduled in the third year. During this time the resident can obtain additional training in disciplines of his/her choice, such as Dermatology, Geriatrics, and Pathology. Special electives may be arranged on an individual basis. Ambulatory Experience Primary care medicine is an important focus of the St. Mary Medical Center Internal Medicine Residency Program. Housestaff are assigned to a weekly General Internal Medicine clinic and will also participate in specialty clinics at both SMMC and Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. An extensive curriculum in outpatient medicine is covered by weekly clinic conferences. Preventive medicine and health maintenance are stressed. In addition to the weekly continuity care clinic, during both the second and third years of training, block rotations devoted to ambulatory care provide further experience in General Internal Medicine, as well as in specialty areas such as Gynecology, Sports Medicine, Medical Consultations, Preop Evaluation, Occupational Medicine, Outpatient AIDS Management, Dermatology, Outpatient Rheumatology, Allergy/Immunology, and Geriatric Assessment and Geropsychiatry. Teaching Conferences Formal teaching conferences are held at noon on a daily basis, presented by faculty from SMMC and other UCLA teaching hospitals. Additional teaching activities which are held one or more times each month include an EKG workshop, a clinic conference, and the Ethics Forum. Case-related teaching is emphasized by Harbor faculty members who conduct Visiting Professor Rounds and the Pulmonary Conference one or two times each month. On a daily basis the Chief Resident and faculty members meet with housestaff for Morning Report. Teaching Rounds are held at least 3 times per week on patient care and consultative services. Benefits Stipend: Salary for the first graduate level is $29,091, with increments of more than $2,000 for each training level. Meals: Meals are provided when on call. Insurance: Health insurance with a co-payment and dental insurance are available for house officers and their families. Life insurance, long-term disability insurance, and malpractice insurance are also provided. The malpractice insurance also includes legal defense and protection against awards from claims reported or filed after completion of graduate medical education if the alleged acts or omissions of the houseofficer are within the scope of the education program. Vacation: Three weeks of vacation are provided at each level of training. Affiliated Programs Residents from Harbor-UCLA Medical Center rotate through St. Mary Medical Center in General Surgery and Emergency Medicine. In Internal Medicine, fellows also rotate from Harbor to St. Mary's in Cardiology, Oncology and Pulmonary Medicine. Location St. Mary Medical Center is located in Long Beach, a metropolis of over half a million people. An area with numerous cultural, educational, and recreational facilities, Long Beach is close to the University of California campuses at Los Angeles and Irvine, and the University of Southern California.
