Internal Medicine Residency Program
The SMMC Training Program in Internal Medicine is affiliated with the UCLA School of Medicine, and the
program director and other full-time faculty are appointed jointly by SMMC and UCLA. This affiliation
allows a high degree of faculty and housestaff interchange between SMMC and other teaching hospitals
within the UCLA system and enhances the various educational programs at SMMC.
First graduate year.
Two approved programs are offered through the National Resident Matching Program.
Internal Medicine C (#102516):
This program, which generally offers eight internships, includes rotations on general Internal Medicine
services with private and non-private patients, the intensive care unit, and the emergency room. Interns are
on call every third or fourth night. Internal Medicine C-Preliminary (#102515): Six internship positions are
available for individuals seeking a one-year program in Internal Medicine prior to entering other disciplines.
The rotations are identical to those outlined above.
Second and third graduate years. Eight positions are offered in each of these years, with rotations on primary
care and specialty services at both SMMC and Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. A typical schedule is outlined
HERE . Fellowships in Internal Medicine subspecialties. One or two positions are available in
Cardiology, Oncology, and Pulmonary Medicine programs sponsored by Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.
Student clerkships. Clerkships of four weeks' duration are offered to Senior medical students from UCLA
and other medical schools in general Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Nephrology, and Emergency Medicine.
General Internal Medicine Teaching Services
A teaching service consists of one resident, two interns, and the teaching
attending physician for the month. Fourth year medical students from UCLA
and other medical schools are often present as a part of the ward team.
Regular teaching rounds are conducted by attending physicians and full-time
faculty. Residents also rotate through the General Medicine Consultation
Service at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.
Subspecialty Rotations
During the second and third years, residents rotate through subspecialty
services in Pulmonary Medicine, Cardiology, Nephrology, and Neurology at
SMMC. In addition, there are subspecialty rotations to Harbor-UCLA
Medical Center in Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Hematology, Oncology,
and Infectious Disease.
Electives
An elective rotation is scheduled in the third year. During this time the
resident can obtain additional training in disciplines of his/her choice, such as
Dermatology, Geriatrics, and Pathology. Special electives may be arranged on
an individual basis.
Ambulatory Experience
Primary care medicine is an important focus of the St. Mary Medical Center
Internal Medicine Residency Program. Housestaff are assigned to a weekly
General Internal Medicine clinic and will also participate in specialty clinics
at both SMMC and Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. An extensive curriculum
in outpatient medicine is covered by weekly clinic conferences. Preventive
medicine and health maintenance are stressed. In addition to the weekly
continuity care clinic, during both the second and third years of training,
block rotations devoted to ambulatory care provide further experience in
General Internal Medicine, as well as in specialty areas such as Gynecology,
Sports Medicine, Medical Consultations, Preop Evaluation, Occupational
Medicine, Outpatient AIDS Management, Dermatology, Outpatient
Rheumatology, Allergy/Immunology, and Geriatric Assessment and
Geropsychiatry.
Teaching Conferences
Formal teaching conferences are held at noon on a daily basis, presented by
faculty from SMMC and other UCLA teaching hospitals. Additional teaching
activities which are held one or more times each month include an EKG
workshop, a clinic conference, and the Ethics Forum. Case-related teaching is
emphasized by Harbor faculty members who conduct Visiting Professor
Rounds and the Pulmonary Conference one or two times each month. On a
