Job Description Training Manager About Amp Up NYC Little Kids Rock has partnered with Berklee College of Music to support the expansion of Modern Band music programming in the New York City Department of Education – the nation’s largest public school district. Launched in early 2014, the initiative will be rolled out over a three-year period to include an additional 600 schools and serve 60,000 K-12 students in NYC with robust music education programming. Amp Up NYC will provide teacher training, classroom instruction, state-of-the-art online technology and a large donation of instruments. Amp Up NYC is the largest private investment in a public school district’s music education program in the history of the United States. Position Overview The Training Manager will be an integral part of the Amp Up NYC team. He or she will be responsible for managing the planning, creation and logistics of all Modern Band teacher training workshops and professional development sessions. The Training Manager will supervise four major areas of Amp Up NYC Modern Band teacher professional development: Content, Training, Community, Logistics. This position will work closely with the Program Staff of Little Kids Rock and with team members from Berklee College of Music to develop training content, oversee a training coordinator who manages workshop logistics, work with schools and the NYCDOE to schedule workshops and professional development sessions and manage recruitment initiatives. The successful candidate should have at least three years music teaching experience (preferably as a Little Kids Rock/Modern Band teacher), and experience leading, designing and/or organizing professional development and curricular/training content. A passion for popular music is a must. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, detail-orientated, collaborative, possesses excellent written and verbal communication skills and is tech-savvy. Supervisor Amp Up NYC Director of Programs (working closely with Little Kids Rock Director of Music Education) Primary Responsibilities Work with the Amp Up NYC Program Director and key programmatic stakeholders to create Amp Up NYC/Modern Band professional development levels, plans and content Manage professional development schedule for hundreds of music teachers in NYC Build, maintain and grow the NYCDOE Modern Band teacher community Understand the needs of NYCDOE music teachers in order to provide them with resources to enhance their music education programming Work with both Little Kids Rock and Berklee College of Music curriculum teams to develop new content and update existing resources for workshop and PD use Become an expert in Berklee’s PULSE Music Method online teaching and learning tool, as well as Little Kids Rock teacher resources Manage workshop recruitment efforts Work with Berklee College of Music and the NYCDOE regarding CEU credits for professional development Amp Up NYC Job Description Page 2 Manage and update the Modern Band workshop PowerPoints and materials in terms of both consistency and constant content innovations Visit many school teachers in the district (significant local travel) to provide resources for teachers and to evaluate Modern Band programs Stay current on professional development opportunities for NYCDOE teachers Understand NYCDOE standards and assessment initiatives to ensure that Modern Band professional development is aligned with NYCDOE priorities Work with Amp Up NYC Director of Programs to create and manage assessment initiatives for Modern Band programs Manage Training Coordinator who executes on all workshop logistics Qualifications 3-5 years music teaching experience, preferably as a Little Kids Rock/Modern Band teacher Understanding of the NYCDOE public school system Experience designing and/or leading professional development or curriculum projects Exceptional interpersonal skills and confidence in presenting; ability to build enthusiasm within both public speaking and more collaborative settings Proven ability to motivate and inspire teachers, students and staff Proficiency in at least one of the following instruments: guitar, electric bass, drum kit, keyboard Exceptional verbal and written communication skills Ability to produce high quality work independently and as part of a team, with flexibility and a positive outlook; desire to be proactive, take ownership of projects and see them through from start to finish Tech savvy, especially regarding presentation, video and audio applications; early adopter related to technology resources; not intimidated by new technology Passionate about popular music and actively connected to popular culture Creative, thoughtful and collaborative approach to project management and problem solving Passion for learning, figuring things out and helping others do the same Team player with a passion for youth development and music education Excellent organizational and computer skills; experience with Word, Excel, PowerPoint Ability to multi-task, independently prioritize tasks and work effectively in a fast-paced, highvolume, deadline-oriented and dynamic organization Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s or doctoral degree preferred Ideal Attributes A shared passion for Little Kids Rock’s mission and pedagogy A dynamic, charismatic, positive temperament that fosters enthusiasm in others High energy, enthusiasm and a can-do attitude Ability to think big, while providing tangible, constructive suggestions to improve the organization and support its growth objectives A collaborative individual that is willing to consider diverse opinions and integrate them into creating effective solutions An individual of the highest integrity Meticulous attention to detail Highly organized Amp Up NYC Amp Up NYC Job Description Page 3 Compensation Salary and benefits are competitive and depend on prior experience.
