Make It Fun (Introductory Activities, 10 minutes)
Prepare to offer one or more of the following activities as your 3-, 4-, or 5-year-olds
arrive. Let one or two teachers lead activities in different areas of the room while
another teacher greets parents and kids at the door.
1. Seven Times
What You Need: No supplies are needed.
What You Do: Tell the children that today you will be talking about the number 7.
Explain that you will do a movement and it is their job to mimic the activity 7 times.
Demonstrate the following activities. Count together as a class as the children do the
activity. Feel free to add your own movements to the list.
1. Hop on one foot.
2. Touch your toes.
3. Do jumping jacks.
4. Hop like a bunny.
5. Turn around in a circle.
6. Sit down and then hop back up.
Repeat the activity until the children lose interest.
What You Say:
At the start of the activity: “Today we are going to talk about the number 7. The number
7 will be in our TRUE story from the Bible today. Before we hear our story, we are going
to do something fun with the number 7. Are you ready? (Pause.) Okay, I am going to do
something silly, and I want you to do the same thing I do but do it 7 times. We will count
together! Here we go!”
At the end of the activity: “You did great! That was some awesome counting! Now are
you ready to see what the number 7 has to do with our Bible story today? Me too!”

Week 2 – October 14, 2012
3s 10:30am K103
2. Guess Who?
What You Need: No supplies are needed.
What You Do: Instruct the children to line up shoulder to shoulder facing you. Choose
one child to be “It,” but keep it to yourself. Ask the children a series of questions. Each
child who answers yes to a question will take a step forward until finally your questions
reveal who “It” is.
Begin the game by calling out things that describe the child you chose until that child is
standing in front of all the other children. For example: If you chose a boy wearing a
blue Spiderman shirt to be “It,” you could first ask all the boys to take one step forward.
Then all the boys wearing a blue shirt take a step forward. Then all the boys with a
picture on their blue shirt take a step forward. Finally, anyone with Spiderman on his
blue shirt, take a step forward. Everyone should cheer for the child and then start the
game all over again. Continue playing as long as the children are having fun. Try to
allow each child to be “It” once.
Make It True (Large Group, 15 minutes)
After children have participated in Make It Fun, gather them for a large group time that
includes interactive worship, introductory sketch and Bible story.
A Worship Leader and live instruments are recommended to sing along with the music
tracks. Encourage children to be active during worship by incorporating the appropriate
hand motions.
Choose an adult or teenager who relates well to preschoolers to tell the Introductory
Sketch. If possible, use the same person for an entire month as the Host role stays the
same each month.
Choose an engaging adult to tell the Bible story. This person should be able to
command the attention of preschoolers and control the group through animated
storytelling. These scripts are written to be told and not read. Advanced preparation is
necessary.

Week 2 – October 14, 2012
3s 10:30am K103
What You Need: Paperclip “Memory Verse Card” (from the Activity Pages on the Web
site) in your Bible at 2 Chronicles 32:8. Gather a CD player; this month’s worship song,
“Do Big Things,” downloaded from the Web site; and the motions for the song. You will
also need “Oh, He Loves Me,” available at www.amberskyrecords.com or on the CD,
One Big Gulp.
WORSHIP LEADER: “Welcome, friends! It's great to see all of your smiling faces today!
Are you ready to hear another AMAZING story from the Bible? (Pause.) Me too! But
first, you have to learn something really important today. I am going to ask you a
question, and I want you to give me an answer. I am going to ask, ‘Who helps me do
big things?’ When I do, I want you to say, [Bottom Line] ‘God helps me do big
things!’ Can you try that with me? Who helps me do big things?”
CHILDREN and WORSHIP LEADER: [Bottom Line] “God helps me do big things!”
WORSHIP LEADER: “Let's say that one more time! Who helps me do big things?”
CHILDREN and WORSHIP LEADER: [Bottom Line] “God helps me do big things!”
WORSHIP LEADER: “That’s right! [Basic Truth] God loves me, and [Bottom Line]
God helps me do big things! Now we are going to sing a really great song about how
God helps us. Are you ready?”
Lead children in singing “Do Big Things,” this month’s worship song.
WORSHIP LEADER: “That was fantastic! You are super singers! I love singing about
how [Basic Truth] God loves me. Don’t you? Now let’s say our Bible verse together.
Do you remember it? (Pause.)
“It says, ‘We (point to chest with both thumbs) have the Lord our God (both hands
pointing up) to help (right arm up as a muscle) us and to fight (left arm up as a muscle)
our battles (cross arms in an “X” in front of your body with closed fists) for us’ (point to
chest with both thumbs), 2 Chronicles 32:8 (hold out hands like a book).
“Will you say it with me?”
CHILDREN and WORSHIP LEADER: “‘We (point to chest with both thumbs) have the
Lord our God (both hands pointing up) to help (right arm up as a muscle) us and to fight
(left arm up as a muscle) our battles (cross arms in an “X” in front of your body with
closed fists) for us’ (point to chest with both thumbs), 2 Chronicles 32:8 (hold out hands

WORSHIP LEADER: "That was a great song! I love singing about God! Thank you for
worshipping with me today! Get ready to hear an incredible story about David from the
Bible.”
Introductory Sketch
First Look offers weekly introductory sketches on the DVD titled “Wonder, Look at God’s
Story.” This DVD is available for purchase at the reThink store on our Web site.
What You Need: “My Story Picture 2” (from the Activity Pages on the Web site.) (See
Theme Notes for more details.)
HOST: (Walk onto stage, looking around as if looking for someone.) “Buddy Bookworm,
are you here? I don’t see you anywhere! Buddy? Oh, hello, everyone! I need your help
again. I am looking for my friend, Buddy Bookworm, and I can’t find him! He’s going to
miss the story, and you know how much he loves to hear stories! Do you see him? (Kids
respond as you ‘find’ Buddy.) Buddy, now I see you! Are you ready to hear today’s
story?
“Let’s open the book and take a look at ‘My Story.’ (Open the flipchart to the second
page.) It’s about a time when I was chosen to do something special. There we ALL
were—Mrs. Rainbow’s entire class. We were sitting … waiting … watching …
wondering who Mrs. Rainbow would choose. Would it be Sally? She can say her ABCs
the fastest! (Shaking your head dramatically) No, not Sally. Would it be Billy? He’s the
tallest and strongest boy in the class! (Shaking your head dramatically) No, not Billy.
How about Anna? She is such a great listener. (Shaking your head dramatically) No, not
Anna.
“Oh, who will she pick? Who will she pick? Me? Me! She picked me! She picked me to
be the line leader. I got to be at the front of the line leading my class down the hall ALL
DAY LONG. I led Mrs. Rainbow’s class to the playground, to music class, and to the
library. It was the best day ever! I loved being the line leader! That was a great day!

Week 2 – October 14, 2012
3s 10:30am K103
“I’m so glad I got to share my story with you today. But my story is not the most
important story. My story is just a part of a bigger story—the biggest story of all—God’s
story!”
Bible Story
First Look offers weekly Bible stories on the DVD titled “Wonder, Look at God’s Story,”
which you may choose to use rather than a live Storyteller this week. This DVD is
available for purchase at the reThink store on our Web site.
What You Need: A Bible and a crown.
STORYTELLER: (Carrying your Bible) “Hello, friends! It makes me so happy to see you
all here. I can’t wait to tell you more of David’s story and how [Bottom Line] God helps
me do big things.
“The Bible is God’s story, and it has the best adventure stories ever. And they’re true!
Let’s open God’s BOOK and take a LOOK at David’s story!
“Today we are going to hear more of David’s story and the adventure that God had
planned for him. We know that David was a shepherd, but God had a bigger adventure
for him. This adventure started with a man named Samuel.
“Samuel was a very important man with a very important job to do. God wanted him to
find the new king. (Hold up the crown.) I bet Samuel thought ‘Oh, my. I’m supposed to
find a king? What does a king look like? Where do I start looking? Who’s going to help
me?’
“Finding a king is a hard job, but God helped Samuel by telling him to go to Bethlehem
and find a man named Jesse. Samuel asked Jesse to line up his sons so he could find
out which one would be the next king.
“When Samuel saw the sons lined up, he counted them. Can you count with me?
(Holding up your fingers as you count) There was one son … two sons … three sons …
four sons … five sons … six sons … seven sons!
“I can imagine Samuel thought, ‘There are seven sons, God! How am I supposed to
know which one should be king? Do you want to choose the tallest son?’ (Put the crown
on your head and stand on your tiptoes as tall as you can.) But God said no. (Take the
crown off your head.)
“Then Samuel probably asked, ‘God, do you want to choose the strongest son?’ (Put
the crown on your head and show your arm muscles.) But God said no. (Take the crown
off your head.)
6
Week 2 – October 14, 2012
3s 10:30am K103
“Then Samuel might have asked, ‘God, do you want to choose the son with the biggest
smile?’ (Put the crown back on your head and make a huge smile, exaggerating it by
putting your index fingers in the corners of your mouth and making dimples.) Again, God
said no. (Take the crown off again.)
(Put the crown back on your head.) “I can just imagine Samuel asking God, ‘How about
the son with the best hair? Do you want the son who can sing? How about the one who
can dance? Maybe You want the son who builds great castles.’
(Shaking your head exaggeratedly) “But God told Samuel that NONE of these sons was
the next king! (Take the crown off again.) I bet Samuel thought, (looking up as if to God)
‘Then how do I find the next king? What are you looking for, God?’
“God told Samuel it didn’t matter what the next king looked like. It mattered what was
inside his heart! (Make a heart shape with both hands.) So Samuel asked Jesse a very
important question: ‘Uh, Jesse? Do you have any more sons?’
“What do you think Jesse said? (Pause.) Jesse said … yes! His youngest son, David,
was out in the field watching the sheep. Everyone had thought he was too little to be
chosen as king, but when David came in, God told Samuel that David would be the next
king! (Put the crown on your head.) David had a heart (make a heart shape with your
hands) that loved God, and one day, God planned to do great things through David.
“Samuel knew that, just like God had helped him FIND the new king, God would help
David to BE a good king. God helped Samuel do a big thing, and God helps us do big
things too! Who helps me do big things?”
CHILDREN and STORYTELLER: [Bottom Line] “God helps me do big things!”
STORYTELLER: “It’s true! [Bottom Line] God helps me do big things! Who helps
me do big things?”
CHILDREN and STORYTELLER: [Bottom Line] “God helps me do big things!”
STORYTELLER: “That’s great! Say it with me one more time. Who helps me do big
things?”
CHILDREN and STORYTELLER: [Bottom Line] “God helps me do big things!”
STORYTELLER: “That’s right! God helps us do big things! Let’s pray together and
thank God for helping us do big things!

Week 2 – October 14, 2012
3s 10:30am K103
“Dear God, thank You for helping us to do big things. With you, anything is possible.
We love You, God! Amen.
“Thank you for being such awesome listeners today! We’ll see you next time!”
Make It Stick (Application Activities, 35 minutes)
These activities are designed to help preschoolers understand and remember today’s
Bible story and Bottom Line. Offer as many of the following activities as Your time,
facilities, resources, and leadership allow. You may want to lead one activity at a time.
Or offer two activities at once and allow half the kids to participate in each, then switch
groups and repeat the activities.
1. God Helps Me
What You Need: “Preschool Problems” (from the Activity Pages on the Web site), white
cardstock, scissors, glue sticks, and crayons.
What You Do:
Before the activity: Make a copy of “Preschool Problems” on white cardstock for each
child. (Option: Cut out the pictures at the bottom of the page for younger 3s. Older 4s
and 5s will enjoy cutting for themselves.)
During the activity: Say the memory verse and do the motions together several times.
Discuss the pictures at the bottom of the Activity Page and how God will help us fight
our battles. Assist the children in cutting out the pictures and gluing them in the squares
provided. Let the children color the pictures.
What You Say:
During the activity: “Our Bible verse this month says, ‘We have the Lord our God to help
us and to fight our battles for us,’ 2 Chronicles 32:8. Let’s look at the pictures on our
paper and see what kind of battles we might have.
(Picture #1) “Oh, this person looks mad. Sometimes we have to battle being mad, don’t
we? Let’s cut this out and glue it to one of the shields. We can fight being mad by telling
people we forgive them. God can help us forgive!
(Picture #2) “What battle do you think this person has? She looks sad to me.
Sometimes we get sad. Let’s cut this out and glue it to one of the shields. We can battle
sadness by being thankful. The more we thank God for what we have, the less sad we
become. God can help us to thank Him.
8
Week 2 – October 14, 2012
3s 10:30am K103
(Picture #3) “What do you think the mom in this picture wants the child to do? She
wants those toys cleaned up! Sometimes we don’t want to obey our mom or dad. That
is a battle God can help us with. Let’s cut this out and glue it to one of the shields. God
can help us obey our moms and dads, and that is a BIG thing!
(Picture #4) “This child has two cookies, and this one has none. What do you think the
battle is? Yes, this child has to decide if he’s going to be selfish or share! Let’s cut this
out and glue it to one of the shields. God can help us win the battle over being selfish
and learn how to share.
(Picture #5) “Oh, no! This child is screaming! That means sweet words are NOT coming
out of that mouth. Sometimes we battle saying mean words instead of nice words. Let’s
cut this out and glue it to one of the shields. God can help us say nice words instead of
mean words.”
As the children color their pictures: [Bottom Line] “God helps me do big things, like
saying I’m sorry, obeying Mom and Dad, and saying sweet words. All of those are BIG
things that God is always ready to help you with. Who can help me do big things?
[Bottom Line] God can help me do big things.”
2. David’s Story
(Note: This activity will continue through the month of November. The children will divide
into small groups and make picture books with drawings from all the stories they will
hear about the life of David during October and November. Keep the poster boards with
the drawings each week and place them on three metal rings like a book. You will have
wonderful picture books to display and share with parents at the end of November.)
What You Need: Large white poster board, crayons, a hole punch, and three large
metal rings. (Note: You will need these supplies for each small group of four to six
children.)
What You Do:
Before the activity: Turn the poster board portrait style. Punch three holes, spaced
evenly apart, going down the left side. Write the following in the top or bottom, center of
each poster board, as a reference for the children’s pictures:
God helps me to do important things.
David Anointed King • 1 Samuel 16:1-13
During the activity: Divide the children into small groups of four to six children. Give
each group a poster board and crayons. Encourage the kids to gather around all sides
of the poster board, either at a table or on the floor. After you briefly review the Bible
story, instruct the children to draw pictures of things from the story. The pictures will be
going in all different directions. That is okay and all part of the fun.
9
Week 2 – October 14, 2012
3s 10:30am K103
(Tip: Ideas of what to draw this week include a crown, seven brothers, David as a
shepherd, David as a king, Samuel, etc.)
What You Say: “You all are doing such a great job making a book about David. The
Bible is the most important book that we can read, and it has SO MANY wonderful
stories in it! In those stories, God tells us how He wants us to act and how to make good
choices. When we are finished making our book, we can show it to other people and tell
them the story of David. God helps us do many things! Who helps me do big things?
[Bottom Line] God helps me do big things!”
3. I’m a Little Shepherd
What You Need: No supplies are needed.
What You Do: Teach the following lyrics and motions to the tune of “I’m a Little
Teapot.”
“I'm a little shepherd (holding arm out with closed fist as if holding a staff), short and
stout (squatting to the ground and then back up).
“What's in my heart is all that counts (placing both hands over your heart).
“Serving God is what I am about (placing a closed fist in the other open hand and then
pointing up).
Praises to God are what I SHOUT!” (Hold your hands above your head and shout the
last word while pumping your fists in the air.)
What You Say: “You all did an awesome job! In our story today, we learned that God
chose David to be king, not because of how he looked or how tall or strong he was, but
because he loved God and had a good heart. God helped Samuel and David, and He
always helps us! Who can help me do big things? (Pause.) You got It! [Bottom Line]
God can help me do big things!”
4. Crown Me
What You Need: “Crown Me” (from the Activity Pages on the Web site), Avery® labels
#5160 or the equivalent, yellow scalloped bulletin board trim (available from any
teacher’s supply store), scissors, a stapler, and jewel or sparkle stickers.
What You Do: Measure the children’s heads by wrapping the yellow border trim around
their heads and cutting it so that a couple of inches overlap. Give the children their cut
flat piece and encourage them to make it look as fancy as possible—something fit for a
king or queen. Encourage them to put a label on the back of their crown. As the children
finish decorating their crowns, staple the ends and make a big deal about crowning

Week 2 – October 14, 2012
3s 10:30am K103
each child. Play a pretend horn, make an announcement—anything to add a fancy
touch to the crowning of the children.
What You Say:
At the start of the activity: “David was chosen by Samuel to be the next king in our Bible
story today. The best part is that no one else even thought David could be the next king.
He was just a plain ol’ shepherd boy. But God saw David’s heart and knew he was
special. Today we’re going to make crowns to remind us how God helped David do big
things!”
At the end of the activity: (Ask everyone to put on their crowns.) “Hear ye! Hear ye! I
crown ye doers of BIG things. Who helps me do big things? [Bottom Line] God
helps me do big things. Now, go forth, knowing that God will help ye, and do big
things!"
5. Coloring Page
This activity allows children to creatively think about how God made them. Fine motor
skills are used to color. Critical thinking as well as fine motor skills will be used in
continued play at home.
What You Need: Coloring Pages, crayons or markers.
What You Do:
Give each child a coloring sheet and crayons or markers.
What You Say: “You all did an awesome job coloring! In our story today, we learned
that God chose David to be king, not because of how he looked or how tall or strong he
was, but because he loved God and had a good heart. God helped Samuel and David,
and He always helps us! Who can help me do big things? (Pause.) You got It!
[Bottom Line] God can help me do big things!”
Make It Real (Small Groups, 5 minutes)
Make It Real is designed to help preschoolers understand how the Bottom Line applies
to them. They’ll discuss real-life experiences and share prayer requests.
Divide kids into small groups of about five to eight children with each leader. Ideally,
assign the same small group leader to the same group of preschoolers for the entire
year.
Small Group Time
11
Week 2 – October 14, 2012
3s 10:30am K103
What You Need: Paperclip “Memory Verse Card” (from the week one Activity Pages on
the Web site) in your Bible at 2 Chronicles 32:8. Provide a journal and a fun-shaped pen
for each small group.
SMALL GROUP LEADER (SGL): “God chose the smallest, youngest brother out of all
the brothers to be the new king. Everyone was surprised! Would you be surprised if God
chose you to be a king or queen? I think we would ALL be surprised if God chose us to
do something that important. But guess what? God DOES want you to do important
things. He has chosen you! Let’s think of some important things God has chosen you to
do. We can write them down in our journal and ask God to help us do them.”
(Write the children’s responses in the journal. If they need help coming up with ideas,
you could mention things like telling others that Jesus loves them, sharing your stuff,
saying kind words, giving hugs, sharing food, helping people who are hurt, obeying
mommies and daddies, telling the truth, etc. Remember to print the words so the
children can recognize their names and letters. Mention their list when you pray
together.)
SGL: “This is a fantastic list! God has chosen you and me to do a lot of important
things. And God says He will help us do them. Who helps me do big things? [Bottom
Line] God helps me do big things. Our Bible verse says so! Let’s say our new Bible
verse together, and then we can pray.”
CHILDREN and SGL: “‘We (point to chest with both thumbs) have the Lord our God
(both hands pointing up) to help (right arm up as a muscle) us and to fight (left arm up
as a muscle) our battles (cross arms in an “X” in front of your body with closed fists) for
us’ (point to chest with both thumbs), 2 Chronicles 32:8 (hold out hands like a book).”
(Repeat the verse several times.)
SGL: “I am so proud of you! That’s a long verse, but you’re getting it! Now let’s close
our eyes and pray.”
Prayer
SGL: “Dear God, sometimes I still get surprised at all the important things You help us
do. Thank You for letting us be a part of your wonderful plan. Please help us to do
everything You ask us to do, like (name things from the list). We love You, God. In
Jesus’ name, amen.”
