Learning Objectives:
National Standards: As a result of the activities in grades 9-12,
 all students should develop
Abilities necessary to do scientific inquiry
Understandings about scientific inquiry
 all students should develop an understanding of
Structure of atoms
Structure and properties of matter
Chemical reactions
 all students should develop understanding of
The cell
Biological evolution
Matter, energy, and organization in living systems
Georgia state standards:
This can be taught not only during the below mentioned units of chemistry and Biology
but also a month or 2 before the graduation tests to refresh the biology concepts and also
cover the concepts of chemistry. This would enable the students to improve the
Graduation test scores.
Lab 1: Synthesis of Adenine Lab
 Biology Objectives:
Students will understand that
 Chemical processes can create the macromolecules that comprise living
things, and investigate how the building blocks of DNA can be
synthesized, using only chemicals readily available in primitive Earth
 Further, students can compare that the chemically generated adenine is
identical in nature to the biotic adenine extracted in the previous lab

Evolution Unit
 Biology GPS Standards:
SCSh2, SCSh3, SCSh4, SCSh5, SB5
 Chemistry Objectives:
Students will be able to
 perform a synthesis reaction where they will generate adenine, using only
chemicals readily available in primitive earth
 will understand that chemical processes are responsible for creating biotic
material
This lab can also be used in higher-level chemistry classes to provide an
example or extension for investigating organic chemistry

Labs 3 and 4: DNA Extraction & Hydrolysis Lab
 Biology Objectives:
Students will understand that
 DNA is a major molecule found in all living things
 Nitrogenous bases are a fundamental element of DNA
 DNA is a chemical structure that can be broken apart through hydrolysis
reactions to release its individual components
