60 WEBSITES IN 60 MINUTES
Stefanie S. Pearlman & Sandra B. Placzek
Marvin & Virginia Schmid Law Library
Introduction
60 websites . . . in 60 minutes; how helpful can that be? Actually, probably more than many people
realize. Exposure to new and different websites can open doors to information. Have you ever thought –
gee, if only that were available on the Internet? Those are the types of websites we’ve tried to include
here. Bear in mind, however, that these websites are far from inclusive and provide only an introduction
to what we hope are new realms. Other than personal interest and common sense approaches to the
reliability of the information reported, we offer no opinion on how REALLY useful they are – to us they
provided something unique or helpful that we want to share. We hope you find at least a few helpful and
you walk away from this presentation armed with links to useful, practical or just plain fun websites.

here’s a website to help in situations of that nature. This site provides an alphabetical list of federal
government’s abbreviations and acronyms – organized in an easy-to-use format. The site also
includes a link to a Military Acronyms and Glossaries page. From Indiana University-Purdue
University Indianapolis University Library.

this website:

One suggestion of websites posed for inclusion in this presentation focused on sites that
provided access to CUSIP numbers. In the endnotes to this presentation, we include thanks to our
law librarian colleagues and all the help they provide; here is a prime example of where their
knowledge was invaluable. Being unfamiliar with these numbers, we posted a query to our
profession’s listserv; relevant results from that query are listed below. For these sites, please note the

the accounts of the Union’s revenue and expenditure and checks whether the financial management

drop-down menus on the left-hand side of the page to access information. Some of the areas and
information listed in those menus include:

Don’t you just hate it when you find a website that you really like – with relevant
information that you use all the time – and it just disappears? Really, how can something that useful
just disappear? Where did it disappear to – an Internet black hole? Say hello to the Internet Archive!
Founded in 1996, this public nonprofit’s mission is to build an Internet Library “with the purpose of
offering permanent access for researchers, historians, and scholars to historical collections that exist
in digital format.” What can you find out the site? There’s more interesting information than we can
name here, but let us just point out a few things for your attention:
- WaybackMachine
o Allows access to archived versions of websites (you know, those sites that have
disappeared);
o Dates back to 1996;

 Notes:
Part of what we’ve done (or tried to do) is to provide access to resources of both a general
nature and those geared toward more practical aspects of life or our audience’s profession. This
category of resources falls more into the “general nature” category – resources that may not
necessarily come up on a day-to-day basis, but are good to know about. These resources also don’t fit
as nicely in other areas or categories, so we’ve gathered them together here under the umbrella
heading of “Just for the Fun of it” Resources.
- Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations:
o This online version is the 10th edition, originally published in 1919 – the online edition is
copyrighted 2000;
o Can do general keyword search in the box provided;
o Can also search by browsing through:
 Chronological Index of Authors;
 Alphabetical Index of Authors;
 Concordance Index to Quotations.
- Encarta:
o Available from MSN, this online encyclopedia contains over 5,000 entries;
o Free version, but can be updated for a fee to Encarta Premium.
- Hallmark:
o Okay, we’ll admit it’s pretty much a commercial site that sells Hallmark products, but the
reason we’ve included it is because it has one great, free feature: e-cards. If you’ve ever
wanted to know where to find e-cards to send to family or friends, this website houses
one of the largest and tasteful e-card libraries on the Internet.
- IMDB:
o MOVIES . . . MOVIES . . . MOVIES . . . really, what more is there to say? Visited by
over 18 million movie lovers a month (that’s a lot of movie lovers), this is THE site for
information about your favorite (or maybe your not so favorite) movies.

LIBRARIANS’ INDEX TO THE INTERNET
Accessed: 4.27.04

Notes:
So what we’re really wondering, at this point, is have you been saturated with the words
“librarian” or “information” – cause here’s a website where those words are going to be thrown
around even more. But if you think about, what a better partnership than librarians – who work to
organize and classify information – and the Internet – perhaps the most unorganized and unclassified
information warehouse to ever exist. Looking at things that way, we figured we couldn’t miss by
including this website.
- Easy to Access, Broad Topical Categories:
o Similar to Yahoo’s directory;
o Broad categories break down into more specific areas or resources;
o Can use the SEARCH box and avoid the directory type listing all together.

In some respects, this is IT – the mother lode of all sorts of information on one website.
If you ever wanted to lose yourself in the Internet and surf for hours on end, immersing yourself in
the widest range of information, this might just be the website for you. The resources and
information housed on this website are far too numerous to mention, so we won’t even try. What we
will do, however, is scratch the surface and tell you about some of what we found – that interested us:
- Thomas:
o We’ve discussed THOMAS in previous presentations, but want to take this opportunity
to remind you what a fantastic treasure trove of federal legislative resources and
information can be found here. If you haven’t explored or used this site in the past, it is
worth visiting.
- The American Memory Project:
o If you’re interested in history – even just a little bit – you can probably find something in
the American Memory Project to pique your curiosity;
o See what information the TODAY IN HISTORY link imparts;
o Click on the SEARCH EXAMPLE of the day link and see what information is retrieved
with one unassuming word or phrase;
o SEARCH by keyword, browse through the collection list by title or limit your search
based on the parameters offered in the upper right-hand corner.
