Reading: answer the questions based on the preceding reading 27% 1 John visited New York City in 1995, and he remembered that trip vividly. Until now he still regarded it as one of his best traveling experiences. He recalled that a couple offered him a precise subway map when he got lost and was too shy to ask for directions near the United Nations. John was thinking of going to the Twin Towers next but didn’t know how. The couple kindly showed John how to take a bus if he wanted to see the city and how to switch to a train if the bus was too slow. Originally John wanted to get there on foot, but it was too far. So he went there by bus. On his way to his destination, John noticed that the streets were clean, the garbage was separated, and the water was free from water pollution. He thought to himself that the city government must have educated its people about the importance of recycling. As a result, citizens there made recycling a top priority, and industries also followed environmental protection laws carried on by EPA. John enjoyed the scenery very much and finally he arrived at the famous attraction-the Twin Towers. 34 What would be the best title for this article? A) John’s trip in New York. When the machine stops, in the year 802,701 AD, he finds himself in a paradisiacal world of small humanoid creatures called Eloi. They are frail and peaceful, and give him fruit to eat. He explores the area, but when he returns he finds that his time machine is gone. In the night, he begins to catch glimpses of strange white ape-like creatures the Eloi call Morlocks. He decides that the Morlocks live below ground, down the wells that dot the landscape. Meanwhile, he saves one of the Eloi from drowning, and she befriends him. Her name is Weena. The Time Traveler finally works up enough courage to go down into the world of Morlocks to try to retrieve his time machine. He finds that matches are a good defense against the Morlocks, but ultimately they chase him out of their realm. Frightened by the Morlocks, he takes Weena to try to find a place where they will be safe from the Morlocks' nocturnal hunting. He goes to what he calls the Palace of Green Porcelain, which turns out to be a museum. There, he finds more matches, some camphor, and a lever he can use as a weapon. That night, retreating from the Morlocks through a giant wood, he accidentally starts a fire. Many Morlocks die in the fire and the battle that ensues, and Weena is killed. The exhausted Time Traveler returns to the pedestal to find that it has already been pried open. Soong Mayling, also known as 'Madame Chiang', died this week at her home in the United States at the age of 106. She was the widow of former Chinese president Chiang Kai-shek, who fled to Taiwan to set up the nationalist government in 1949, after losing a civil war to Communist forces under Mao Zedong. A woman who watched, and was many times involved, in some of the most tumultuous events of the 20th century, has died. Madame Chiang Kai-shek has died at her home in New York. Madame Chiang was born Soong Mei-Ling on the Chinese island of Hainan on Feb. 12, 1898. She was educated in the United States, becoming fluent in English. In the 1930s, she served as her husband's ambassador, successfully persuading the U.S. Congress to help China fight the Japanese. In announcing her death, Taiwan Nationalist party spokesman Alex Tsai told reporters: "Madame Chiang, beloved by the people of Taiwan, who bridged the turbulence of three centuries, who made excellent contributions to the Republic of China, to Taiwan, died quietly at her home in New York this morning." They just keep floating. One of the things the United Nations worries about when it talks about space issues is: What are we going to do with all that space junk! What if it hits a spaceship? What if it lands on a planet? You might think it's strange, but until now, a lot of people thought it would be OK to just leave junk in space! More than 8500 objects classified as "space debris" can be detected through ground-based surveillance and radar detection systems. November 1957, Russian scientists managed to lob a 180-pound metal sphere called Sputnik 1 into orbit around the earth. Its purpose was simple and remarkably low-tech: scare the hell out of Americans by broadcasting a signal that could be heard via radio every 90 minutes. There was no military or commercial application for Sputnik, it was a blatant act of Cold War propaganda and it was a smashing success. A year later, NASA managed to put a satellite called Vanguard 1 into orbit and the race for space was on. Oddly, none of the contestants stopped to consider that, while the subjugation of the last frontier was financed through traditional methods of raping and pillaging, the "final frontier" has no Martians to enslave and no natural resources to consume. Thus, the race became a macho game to see who could "get it up" the highest and keep it up the longest. 4 Class: Name: Number: Fast forward 42 years. It's a new century and the space race, like the cold war, is officially being won by capitalism – not the noble ideas of Communism or Democracy – just good old fashioned wireless-communication networks and satellite TV. But it seems that even the capitalists are having their problems taming the final frontier. Sputnik 1 fell back to the earth six months after it was launched, but Vanguard 1 still makes its daily pass around the planet. Though, it's now about as useful as a VW Bug made in the same year and even more noteworthy, it's not alone. Of approximately 2,400 man-made satellites that have been launched since 1957, more than 2,000 of them are now obsolete or abandoned and, according to the US National Space Command (NSC), there are 20 pieces of useless debris in orbit for every operational satellite. Now, a sensible person might look at this situation and be inclined to ask: why pour billions of dollars into developing a space station when: A) the other space station already in orbit is about to be discarded because it has little viable use beyond that of a movie set; and B) the billions of dollars could be better spent developing things like alternative fuel sources that would be commercially viable and improve life for all of the planet's inhabitants? Really, there is little else "out there." Unless you're an X-Files fan, in which case "the truth" is out there, but everyone knows that truth is hard to sell.
