Criteria for Consideration of “Standing Appointment”
in the Department of Geography
(Posted December 2011)
The Appointments Committee will make their recommendation on the basis of the following criteria.
1.
Assessment of a teaching dossier, similar to that prepared for full time faculty considered for Promotion and
Tenure. The dossier will include:
a) a statement of teaching philosophy,
b) course outlines and assignments, which demonstrate that course content complies with course descriptions,
employs appropriate forms of evaluation and delivery, and are comprehensive and current in their coverage of
course materials,
c) peer evaluations of classroom performance and/or online teaching at The University of Western Ontario over
the previous three years or more,
d) teaching awards or recognition of teaching excellence at The University of Western Ontario over the previous
three years or more; and
e) student course evaluations for each course taught at The University of Western Ontario for the last three years
or more.
Information on the preparation of a teaching dossier is available at: http://www.uwo.ca/tsc/dossierguide.html
2.
The Appointments Committee will examine the mean and median scores for the combined Questions 1-14 and
Question 15 for each course taught over the last three years. Each course taught must have a mean or median
score of at least 4.5 and a three-year mean or median average of at least 5.0
In the case of Distance Studies courses, instructors who both authored and taught their course(s) must have a
mean or median score of at least 4.5 and a three-year mean or median average of at least 5.0 in both sections of
their evaluations, while instructors who only taught will be evaluated on the basis of the Instructor Data section
only.
It should be noted that the student evaluations are one component of the overall assessment and are not
sufficient in and of themselves to warrant a Standing Appointment.
3.
Pursuant to the Article “Official File”, any
a) non-anonymous commendations;
b) non-anonymous complaints that have been substantiated, or;
c) any material the Member considers relevant to the assessment of teaching performance
will be entered into the Official File as files “created for assessment purposes” Clause 2.1.1 (k) and will be
considered by the Appointments Committee. In compliance with “Members’ Rights” (Clause 4), if any such
material is added to the Official File, the Member will be notified in writing within 30 days of its inclusion and
material added by the Member in response will also be included and considered by the Appointments Committee.
