“Therefore, since we have been justified by faith,
we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Romans 5:1 ESV
Grace, peace, and the love of Christ be with you all!
This summer, we will be spending a lot of time in the book of Romans. Verse 5:1 is one of the great verses of the book.
Anytime St. Paul writes, “Therefore…” it means we need to pay close attention to what is being written.
St. Paul tells us we have peace with God through Christ. We have been justified by faith, and not by anything that we
have done. We don’t have to earn God’s love. Through Christ, all that needs to be done has already been done for us.
Such love! Such grace! Such peace! Thanks be to God for this incredible gift.
Martin Luther called the book of Romans the chief part of the New Testament, and the purest gospel. Luther thought
we all should memorize this book. He called for us to read and re-read this book often.
The book of Romans is part of my summer reading list this year, and I invite you to have it on your reading list too. Find
a good commentary on Romans as well, and keep it handy. I will be reading Luther’s commentary on Romans alongside
the epistle.
It is also good to come together and discuss the book of Romans. In our lectionary bible studies on Wednesday morning,
we are going to be discussing this book throughout the summer. If you have time, come and join us! We meet each
Wednesday at 10 a.m. We will have the coffee ready! The discussions are lively, and we always come away with a
better understanding of God’s Word to us.
Have a blessed summer season! Come and worship with us as often as you can! I’m looking forward to seeing you!
God’s peace be with you!
Pastor Kevin
COUNCIL CORNER JULY 2014
At the June council meeting:
1. Vicki Hrivnak of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran in Johnstown presented information and a request for
monetary support to the Camp Sequanota Capital Funds campaign, Framing Faith for the Future, with a
three-year goal of $1,200,000 for major renovations and improvements to the camp. Council later voted to
set a goal of $5000 from the congregation over the three years. We believe this is a realistic target for our
membership over three years for this valuable asset to our youth and adults. Later, Ben and Lynette Little
graciously accepted a request to be the St. Paul’s congregational leaders to the Sequanota campaign
committee. You will hear more about this campaign and how businesses, individuals, families, and
congregations can contribute to this cause. Thank you Ben and Lynette for your willingness to be our
leaders for this campaign.
2. Marlin and Jean Plymette and Pastor Kevin are our voting delegates to the Allegheny Synod Assembly June
5 – 7at the Blair County Convention Center. (Report of the assembly elsewhere in this newsletter.)
3. Worship and Music Committee has a sign-up sheet for volunteers to wash the cups after communion. We
are moving to using cups for every communion service so the altar guild is in need of this support. Using
the cups rather than Intinction, is theologically correct, in addition to being a “healthier” alternative to
dipping fingers into the chalice. Please volunteer a Sunday of your time to assist with this important
service.
4. Congratulations to the newly-elected and returning council members. Elected in May for 3-year terms
were: Eric Dreikorn, Elizabeth Penna, Ed Vorhauer, Jim Hockensmith, and Cathy Albright. Thank you to all
for your willingness to step up to this worthy cause for our congregation.
5. We discussed the closing of the Nanty Glo Food Pantry who is being evicted from its location in the
basement of the Liberty Museum and upon the retirement of the director. The food pantry is a valuable
service that last month provided food for 283 families and over 1,000 people. The food pantry is
desperately in need of a director and a location to store and distribute food to those in need. If you are
reading this and have an idea for a new location please let Pastor Kevin or a council member know so that
we can look into it and continue this ministry beyond July 31.
6. Council does not meet in July. The August meeting will be a potluck dinner at the pavilion on Sunday August
10 at 5 PM. All present, departing, and new members of council and their families are invited.
7. The annual church picnic will held in the pavilion on Sunday, August 17 beginning at 5:00. Bring a covered
dish, lawn chairs, energy for games, and your family for an evening of fellowship, music, and of course, good
food.
8. The next regular council meeting will be Monday, September 1 at 7:00 for our reorganization meeting and
election of officers.
UPSTREAM
Taking a stand for the gospel of Christ can make us unpopular with others. It can even get us in trouble. From childhood on, we
know this to be true: Not giving in to peer pressure to bully a weaker kid can make us a target of bullying ourselves. Things don't
change all that much when we grow up. Passion for peace is hard to cultivate when conflict and resentment loom large.
Remembering the poor is less fashionable than obsession over celebrity. Mentioning God is frowned upon in the public square.
Fairness and generosity are easily pushed aside in a tough market. Wouldn't it be a relief not to have to struggle against that stream?
How easy it would be to just drift along. In daily life we learn to keep our heads down and fall into line. Even when we hear Christ's
challenging call to love radically, fear, habit, and exhaustion stifle us. We want to follow faithfully, but sometimes it can seem as if
everything around us is conspiring to make it harder. Who has the time? Who has the energy? Who has the courage? On our own,
maybe none of us does. But we are not alone. Fed at God's table and supported by God's community of sinner-saints, we are strong
enough to resist the tide of convenience and heartlessness with imagination and compassion. Called by Christ and marked with the
cross, we are made new at every moment and free to make choices apart from social pressure. We can speak out and risk offending,
risk being unpopular, risk being opposed. We have nothing to fear, because the waters of baptism flow upstream, back to the Source
ALLEGHENY SYNOD ASSEMBLY REPORT
The assembly opened on Thursday evening with worship service and the ordination of two new pastors to Allegheny
Synod. Pastor Katie Maul, a resident of Portage, has been called to Stony Creek parish beginning July 1. ((ASK Pastor if he
has the name of the pastor assigned to Trinity Lutheran in Bedford as assistant pastor. I don’t have my bulletin and
cannot find the name in any of my paperwork.))
Friday morning started at 7:00 with registration and moved to the first ballot for the calling of a bishop. There were 273
registered voting delegates attending the assembly. I won’t go through all the details of the five ballots to reach a final
call for Pastor Michael Rhyne as bishop-elect. I will say that each ballot was preceded with individual and group prayer,
meditation, reflection, and asking for the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The selection process and calling of a bishop is not
a campaign but a calling from the Holy Spirit. We ask continued guidance and support for our new bishop. Bishop Rhyne
will be installed at a service in October.
A brief summary and listing of other key items of interest from assembly in no particular order:

Election of Synod Council representatives

Election of Discipline Committee representatives

Election of Consultation Committee representatives

Reports of our many synod partners including ALSM, LAMPa, Gettysburg Seminary, Gettysburg College and
several others

Opportunities for music and prayer

Four Bible study sessions

Reports of the officers

Passage of the 2016 budget

Katherine Maul and David Weinhold were ordained at Synod Assembly.
Synod Assembly closed at 12:45 Saturday.
If you would like further information or to discuss the workings of the assembly, please speak to Pastor Kevin, Marlin, or
Jean Plymette.
NO COUNCIL MEETING IN JULY
Council will get together August 10th at 5:00 p.m. for a potluck dinner at the
Pavilion!
All present, departing and new members of council and their families are invited.

SHARING FROM THE HEART….
Happy Summer to all! Jello is always a winner when it comes to
tasty treats and this one’s not only tasty, it’s refreshing and
most colorful! I’ve had several requests for this recipe so…
here it is! It takes some time to prepare but it’s actually a
very easy dessert! Enjoy!
Layered Jello
Ingredients:
4 pkg (3oz) Jello (different flavors & colors)
Dissolve 1 pkg of Jello in 1 cup of boiling water and add ½ cup of cold
water. Pour this jello into a glass cake pan. (It doesn’t matter what
size pan you use; the larger the pan, the thinner the jello layers will
be). Refrigerate until set firmly.
While first jello is setting, prepare the white filling.
2 c. milk; 1 ½ c. sugar;
Mix and heat till scalded
Dissolve 2 Knox gelatin in ½ cold water; Add this to the milk mixture.
When cooled a little, add 1 pint of sour cream and 2 tsp vanilla to the
milk mixture.
I make this milk filling in a lg pitcher measure.
layers, so divide it up appropriately.
You will need 3 white
When the jello in the cake pan is set, pour white milk mixture to make a
white layer. Put back in refrigerator until the white is set. Prepare
the next jello (1 c boiling & ½ c cold water) and let it cool while the
white layer sets. It won’t hurt to let the milk mixture set out while you
continue preparing the layers. It is important to let each layer set
firmly before pouring the next layer on top. Continue alternating layers
until all are set. I hope you’ll take the time to try this one! It’s a
keeper!
THANK YOU…..
Thanks to everyone that helped to make this year’s Relay for Life a
great success! Your support and participation in the event was great
and, we succeeded in supporting the American Cancer Society with a
great 24 hour event! Thank you again and we look forward to wrapping
the year up in September!
A very special thank you for being so very thoughtful! We are very
thankful for your graciousness of a meal at this time. The Morgan
Family

On the grounds of the Sr Center and Firehall in Vinco
We always have a “Strawberry Shortcake” booth and
people come every year for our wonderful dessert.

so listen for these announcements.
The Heritage Festival is a time for all to gather, meet new friends, renew
friendships with out of town people, enjoy all kinds of music from various
groups and especially, enjoy all kinds of good food!
