We are hereby inviting you to join us in the initiative and be part of this worthy cause. Opkyk is a centre and healing place for the child that cannot be accommodated in the main stream school system and who needs remedial assistance. In some instances where they want and are able to, they move back to main stream education. They can work in intimate, loving environment, become real self- motivated students, being taught to set goals and work as independent as possible. The teacher- child ratio is 1:6. The children in Opkyk follow a national home schooling system (Impak). They are from grade 4 – 9, and aged 10 – 16. Pathways was founded when an urgent need for a high quality stimulation centre for children with severe disabilities in the region was identified. There are 18 children in Pathways and 3 on a waiting list. Their ages vary from 5 to 19 years and several of them have no expressive speech, which mean that we have to introduce them and their caregivers to augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). This is the use of pictures, symbols and programmable devises like talking photo albums to help them communicate. We are guided in this by our Communication Pathologist and the Centre for AAC at the University of Pretoria. AAC is also being used for the babies and other non-speakers that we identify in the community, but do not reside at Pathways. In total more than ninety people benefit from our service at this moment, and we are certain that this figure will definitely increase in future. On 28 and 29 September 2011 we are planning a training workshop at Opkyk Pathways that will benefit all the people in North-West who need AAC. We are inviting and involving the Education Department in this, and hope to reach those in the rural areas who don’t know about AAC, but has a need for it. At Pathways we have an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) for each child. centre daily from Brits, Hartbeespoort, Beestekraal and Theresapark in Pretoria. The Pathways kids come to the The children receive occupational, speech and water therapy as well as various kinds of unique therapies. Apart from a small pool there is an undercover stainless steel spa bath in a special room. The children benefit a great deal from the water therapy during summertime. They are also introduced to music and art through therapy. Equi therapy (horse therapy) is very popular and more than 70 children from the community benefit and enjoys it weekly, apart from the 24 children at the centre. a Disabled child who cannot speak is an easy victim for molestation, and therefore we extended our services to an aftercare center in the afternoons. This was established after it was discovered that some of the children had terrifying experience when they have to travel home by means of public transport. The Vodacom Change the World project 2010 programme gave 10 people the unique opportunity to work at one of 10 SA-based charitable organizations, for six months from April 2011, and get paid for their time. The campaign is aligned to a worldwide Vodafone initiative, called World of Difference. The Vodacom Change the World programme, is delivered by the Vodacom Foundation, a division of Vodacom (Pty) Ltd in association with Avusa Media. Proceeds of the golf day will be used to keep our Vodacom CTW volunteer (Santie Kotze, a teacher who implement AAC in the school and the curriculum for the children’s individual needs) as a staff member after the programme ends in September.
