PREPARING FOR YOUR COLONOSCOPY
Split Dose Suclear Instructions
If you take ASPRIRIN, IRON, OR COUMADIN, you may need to stop this 1 week before the
procedure, or as otherwise directed by the provider. Please discuss with your provider.
If you take regular medications, please ask how to take them the day before your procedure and the
day of the procedure
DO NOT FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS THAT COME WITH THE BOWEL PREP KIT.
FOLLOW THESE DIRECTIONS ONLY!!
DAY BEFORE PROCEDURE:
Drink CLEAR LIQUIDS all day. NO FOOD, NO DAIRY, NO ALCOHOL
You will remain on clear liquids the entire day before your procedure
CLEAR LIQUIDS INCLUDE:
 Strained fruit juices without pulp (ex: apple, white grape, Ocean Spray®,
Snapple®, Crystal Lite®, Kool Aid®, etc)
 Water, Tea, clear broth or bouillon
 Coffee (NO dairy, milk, non-dairy creamer)
 Ensure® or Boost® (NOT Ensure® plus or with fiber) as meal supplements
 Gatorade®, carbonated and non-carbonated soft drinks, fruit flavored drinks,
plain (no fruit added) Jello®, ice popsicles (no ice cream)
 NOTHING RED OR PURPLE
IF DIABETIC – USE GLUCERNA® OR CHOICE® AS MEAL SUPPLEMENTS

At 6:00 PM take Dose 1
1. Dilute the 6-oz oral solution prior to use by pouring the entire contents of the bottle into the 16oz mixing container and then filling the container with cool water to the fill line and mix
2. Drink the entire solution in the container. It is best to complete drinking the solution within 20
minutes.
3. Refill the container with 16 oz of water to the fill line and drink it over the next 2 hours.
4. Refill the container with 16 oz of water to the fill line and finish drinking it before going to bed.
BE NEAR A TOILET! You may experience bloating and some cramping, and definite
diarrhea, loose and watery stools. This is normal and it may last for a few hours.
At some point during your prep you may become very nauseous, feel like you are going
to vomit or even vomit. It is recommended that if you feel very full and nauseous or you
vomit that you take a break and stop drinking the prep for 20 minutes to a half hour.
Then resume drinking the prep. If this happens again stop for 20 minutes to half an hour
and then restart
The day OF your colonoscopy:

5 hours prior to arriving at the GI Lab
1. Dissolve the powder of Dose 2 by adding water to the fill line on the jug.
2. Shake the jug until all the powder is dissolved. The solution can be used with or
without the addition of a flavor pack. Flavor packs are available in Cherry,
Lemon-Lime, Orange and Pineapple. When dissolved in water to a volume of 2
liters, the solution is clear and colorless. The solution may be refrigerated after
adding water. The solution should be used within 48 hours of reconstitution.
3. Using the 16-oz container provided with the kit, drink all the solution in the jug at
a rate of one 16-oz container every 20 minutes (this is four 16-oz containers over
a period of one and a half hours).
4. Complete drinking the solution at least 2 hours before the colonoscopy.
5. Consume only clear liquids until 2 hours prior to colonoscopy. Thereafter, nothing
should be consumed until the completion of colonoscopy.
6. Do NOT consume any solid food until after the procedure.
7. Even if you are scheduled for an EGD, it is OK to drink the split dose
bowel prep
Helpful Hint for Preparing for Colonoscopy: You may find that sucking on a
hard candy is helpful between glasses of the bowel prep. It has been
recommended that Ginger hard candy is helpful as it also can help with
nausea.
