Research Chemist – Chemical Specialties (Singapore) job description Date Posted: June 10, 2009 Shift: First Location: Singapore Days/Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm Department: Technology FLSA Status: Exempt Reports To: Director of Commercial Technology Band: 4 General Summary The focus of this position is to develop water-based products for industrial products and additives for the Pacific Rim region primarily using locally sourced materials and to support the regional accounts. The successful candidate will lead and commercialize Research and Development (R+D) projects and programs by developing water-based products for industrial products and additives that provide clear competitive advantage for our commercial markets and are engineered to meet the needs of new and existing markets aligned with the strategic business plan. Primary Responsibilities Experimentation and Commercialization: Conduct Chemical Specialties R+D of water-based products and commercialize. Designs, conducts, and evaluates experiments of significant difficulty and then draws scientific conclusions. May direct Assistant. Creates and carries new products and new product families through scale-up and commercialization. Involves customer and supplier education. Source and evaluate new raw materials and product improvements. Develop new products via bench work efforts. Interact with plant and Health Environmental and Regulatory Affairs (HE&RA) staff on new product scale-up. Evaluate developed product at customer's site. People Influence/Customer Relationships: Develop and actively maintain external and internal relationships to share knowledge, promote technical leadership, process understanding and material performance. Provide technical assistance to the customers, production, marketing staff and sales. Support: Develop and maintain intimate knowledge and understanding of product and project histories to participate and lead technical and business discussions. Support other chemists to solve research problems. Participate in business planning activities. Regulatory/Compliance: Work with HE&RA team to learn, understand and properly follow policies and procedures that ensure compliance with regulatory agencies. Be knowledgeable of regulatory requirements (Food contact, International chemical inventories, REACH) to support commercial activities. Actively participate in lab safety. Industry Knowledge/Professional Associations: Develops novel products for the industry based on industry requirements. Maintain professional memberships, certifications and relationships. Manufacturing and Quality Control: With supply chain, develop and specify manufacturing and quality control procedures for new products. Supervise and implement the First Manufactured Batch process/scale-up trial runs. Assist supply chain as needed, e.g., disposition of obsolete raw material or finished product inventory. Financial Objectives: Participate in implementing company-wide and departmental plans to achieve the year-to-year and long term objectives of the organization, focused on EBITDA growth and EBITDA/assets optimization. Business Influence/Business Relationships: Makes broad recommendations with business impact. Works within entire Michelman organization to recommend ideas and approaches to current business strategy. Interacts with suppliers and customers. Develop and actively maintain high level of focus with suppliers, customers/prospects and industry organizations and embrace focus throughout the organization. Leadership: Selectively participates in Michelman business teams and provides technical recommendations. Scientific Knowledge: Applied broad scientific knowledge to develop novel products. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Proficient in standard business office software Possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including presentation skills Able to perform financial calculations and assessments Capable of conducting bench scale experiments and plant trials Able to travel by car and plane and visit a global base of customers and facilities Good work ethic, analytical, observational skills, DOE experience is desirable Experience working in a team environment Able to work in a chemical laboratory environment and wear required PPE Fluent in English and at least one local language Created: June 10, 2009 Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree (minimum) in physical science, chemistry, chemical engineering, biology Minimum of 5 - 10 years of applicable industrial experience in water-based chemicals and additives, emulsion technology or waterbased formulated products, functional coatings experience is desirable. Applicable industries include paints, coatings, composites, textiles, graphic arts, floor care, and nonwovens.
