OCTOBER 2005
Celebrating Unity in Diversity
October being Membership Solidarity Month is a time of
celebrating the paradoxical mark of the church, which is
“diverse yet one.” This is embodied even in the
Trinitarian nature of God being “one in three persons” –
God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The diversity that
is present and real in church life whether in terms of
spiritual gifts, personality and opinion ought not to be
regarded as impediment but as stepping-stones towards
unity. “Magkakaiba Ngunit Nagkakaisa sa Paglilingkod”
as theme for the month will help us appreciate the
beauty of diversity in the spirit of unity and celebrating
such for the glory of God, the One who holds us
together. The following story speaks of the essence of
diversity and unity. This was based on an Indian legend
written by Anne Hope, 1978.
Once upon a time, all the colors in the world
started to quarrel; each claimed that she was the
best, the most important, the most useful, the
favorite.
Green said:
“Clearly I am the most
important, I am the sign of life and of hope. I was
chosen for grass, trees, leaves – without me all the
animals would die. Look out over the country side
and you will see that I am in the majority.”
Blue interrupted: You only think about the
earth, but consider the sky and the sea. It is water
that is the basis of life and this is drawn up by the
clouds from the blue sea. The sky gives space and
peace and serenity. Without my peace you would all
be nothing but busybodies.”
Yellow chuckled: “You are all so serious. I
bring laughter, gaiety and warmth into the world.
The sun is yellow, the moon is yellow, the stars are
yellow. Every time you look at a sunflower the
whole world starts to smile. Without me there would
be no fun.”
Orange started next to blow her own
trumpet: “ I am the color of health and strength. I
may be scarce, but I
VOLUME 3, NUMBER 10
am precious for I serve the inner needs of human
life. I carry all the most important vitamins. Think of
carrots and squash, oranges, mangoes and chesa. I
don’t hang around all the time, but when I fill the
sky at sunrise or sunset, my beauty is so striking
that no one gives another thought to any of you.”
Red could stand it no longer. He shouted out:
“I’m the ruler of you all, life’s blood. I am the color of
danger and of bravery. I am willing to fight for a
cause. I bring fire in the blood. Without me the earth
would be empty as the moon. I am the color of
passion and of love; the red rose, poinsettia and
poppy.”
Purple rose up to his full height. He was very
tall and he spoke with great pomp: “ I am the color
of royalty and power. Kings, chiefs and bishops
have always chosen me for I am a sign of authority
and wisdom. People do not question me – they listen
and obey.”
Indigo spoke much more quietly than all the
others, but just as determinedly: “Think of me. I am
the color of silence. You hardly notice me, but
without me, you all become superficial. I represent
thought and reflection, twilight and deep waters.
You need me for balance and contrast, for prayer
and inner peace.”
And so the colors went on boasting, each
convinced that they were the best. Their quarrelling
became louder and louder. Suddenly there was a
startling flash of brilliant white lightning; thunder
rolled and boomed. Rain started to pour down
relentlessly. The colors all crouched down in fear,
drawing close to one another for comfort.
Then Rain spoke: “You foolish colors, fighting
among yourselves, each trying to dominate the rest.
Do you know that God made you all? Each for a
special purpose, unique and different. He loves you
all. He wants you all. Join hands with one another
and come with me.
“He will stretch you across the sky in a great
bow of color, as a reminder that he loves you all,
that you can live together in peace.
- a promise that he is with you,
- a sign of hope for tomorrow.”
And so whenever God has used a good rain
to wash the world, He puts the rainbow in the sky,
and when we see it, let us remember to appreciate
one another.
D’ NEWSbits!
kanilang tungkulin noong Setyembre 4, 2005, . Ito’y sina
Ana del Rosario, Caring Reyes at Marissa Layaban para
sa Pre-school class, Joan Tirona at Princess Mabbatung
sa Gr. 1, May Timba sa Gr. 2, Shane Cantire sa Gr. 3,
Dyna Bolotaolo sa Gr. 4, Myrna Espejo sa Gr. 5,
Guillermo Mendoza III sa Gr. 6 at Lina Reyes sa High
School.
ginawang pagtatalaga. Ito’s sina Elders Buddy Layaban,
Juliet Dayrit, Allan Saquilayan, Sammy Cantada, Emma
Acuna at Jessie Fauni. Si Sis. Wilma Pelagio ang
tumatayong CEN Volunteer Coordinator.
limang pirasong tinapay at dalawang isda.
“Mirroring Christ’s Teaching to the Youth” noong Youth
Sunday, Setyembre 18, 2005.
One Day Wage for the Lord Ilulunsad.
Bilang
pagkilala
sa
Diyos
na
pinagmumulan
ng
kabuhayang
pinagkakakitaan ng bawat anak Niya ay
ilulunsad ang “One Day Wage for the
programa nito.
Mga Highlights sa Walong Dekada ng Buhay ng
Sabang Church of Christ Disciples (3rd of a series)
Ikaapat na Dekada 1956-1966


Sa
pagitan
ng
1959-1961
walang
permanenteng pastor na naglingkod sa
iglesia. Sa pamamagitan ng Caridad
Disciples ng Cavite City, nakilala at naging
kasama sa pananambahan ang mga
miembro ng Matthew 16:18 Church sa
Crisostomo, Cavite City. Naging masigla
ang
fellowship
ng
dalawang
denominasyong ito. Ang pastor ng Matthew
16:18 na sina Pastor Regalado Manimtim,
Pastor Roger Gonzales at Pastor Valeriano
Gonzales ang siyang naghalinhinan sa
lingguhang
pagpapastor
sa
Sabang
Disciples. Bawat buwan, nagkaroon ng
sama-samang pananambahan ang lahat
ng churches ng dalawang denominasyon
sa Cavite.

tubong Calamba, Laguna. Ang pamilya ni
Pastor Bejar ang unang manggagawa after

Combining special numbers of interpretative song, group games
ala TV program “Game ka na ba?” and storytelling contest, the celebration of Linggo ng Wika on August 19, 2005
at the church-school grounds turned out to be festive. Planned out collectively by the faculty and participated in
by DLA pupils, this was the first time the school did a galore of activities promoting the richness of Filipino culture
and human talents. The storytelling contest which could well be the high point of the program, had three winners
namely Jhean Paulen Lota 1st place, Maxine Landicho, 2nd place and Julienne Jeremy, 3rd place.

School Board passes significant actions.
Now in its fourth month of holding regular monthly meetings, the DLA School Board has
passed a number
of significant actions, some of which are as follows:
o Application for membership in PERAA (Private Education Retirement Educational Annuity Association) to
address the retirement benefit package for regular
o

permanent academic and non-academic personnel of the school. With only 3.25% of basic salary of the
personnel as monthly premium, which the school has to shoulder, staff and faculty can look forward to a
retirement/separation pay after a certain number of years of faithful service to the institution.
Approval of the faculty ranking criteria as basis for merit increases in the future. The criteria include
educational qualification, 40%, professional growth, 40% and years of service, 20%. Under the criteria of
professional growth, 20 points go to teaching performance and the remaining 20 points are distributed
among continuing education, membership in professional organization, service to the church and
community as well as to the school. For years of service, 1 point is given for every year of service in the
DLA.
Granting of 10% discount in tuition fees to children of church and school personnel enrolled in the DLA.
Charging 5% of amount due as penalty for delayed monthly or quarterly payments. This will be for
implementation next school year.
IAC scheme helps construct school building.
The Invest-a-Cash fund generation scheme for the school building construction was willingly
responded to by at least 10 people from here and abroad raising a total of P2.18M in loans payable in
five years. Church members and friends who entrusted to the school hard-earned savings as
personal loan to help construct at least the ground floor of the building included Olga/Emer Frani,
Joann/Allan Samonte, Leng Lubang, Letth Lubang-Seah, Atanacio/Liling Fauni, Gertrudes/Ed FauniReyes, Dave Samson, Jerson Sapida and Rucila Tumitit. Donations were also received from the
Tirona family, an initial gift of $6,000.00 from the $12,000.00 pledge for the school library in memory of the late
Damaso Tirona and P40,000.00 from Ms. Myrna Sapida-Chan. Finishing touches for the ground floor are
underway with November as targeted month for completion. This first phase of construction covers two
classrooms, administration offices, faculty lounge cum temporary clinic and reading room.

DLA faculty and staff hold spiritual retreat. In connection with the Spiritual Formation Week, which was
observed from September 5-9, 2005, the faculty and staff went on a one-day retreat at Serenity House of Sobriety
in Tagaytay City on August 26, 2005. With the theme, “Children in the Bible, Children in our Time” the retreatants
engaged in small group sessions involving self-disclosure on their walk with God, Bible study, singing and teambuilding activities. A hundred percent attendance was achieved in this first-time retreat activity exclusively for
school personnel, which was facilitated by the Pastoral Team comprised by Pastor Leng Lubang, Bro. Jing
Calungin and Sis. Wilma Pelagio.

Spiritual Formation Week. Daily 30-minute chapel services in the morning, a Bible Quiz and a culminating
activity on the last day marked the observance of Spiritual Formation Week, which was
conducted for the first time in the DLA. The speakers included Pastor Leng Lubang, Sis,
Wilma Pelagio and Bro. Jing Calungin. Follow-up discussions on the sub-themes tackled
during chapel service were facilitated by the class advisers in their respective rooms.
Each class also shared varied presentations during the culminating activity on the last day.
Winners in the Bible Quiz included Mernard Loui Landicho, Dionyell Julia De Pedro and Phoebe Gift Odulio for
Gr. VI level; Vincent Reolope, Niña Bajade and Mara Eriza Mamaril for Gr. V, all listed according to their ranking,
1st to 3rd places. Other resource persons who helped in making the weeklong program meaningful were Pastor
Joel Gervacio serving as guitarist and Mr. Louie De Ocampo as Quiz Master.

Confession of faith or baptism is a basic step to
membership in the Church. However, it does not end
there because it necessitates commitment and
obligations.
