Comments on demand





Overall there is some perception that adult grass football is in decline. Whilst this may be the case
with Saturday league football, and more teams now playing small sided games on artificial and indoor
pitches, there is still a healthy Sunday football culture within and around Winchester and burgeoning
youth teams.
Saturday league sides – not a problem in accommodating these on Saturdays.
One Saturday league team playing on school/education land at Sparsholt College
Clubs in south of league often playing at Fleming Park and Fair Oak (Lansdown Park) but many
cancellations with Southampton league and pitches so often end up coming up to Winchester and KGV
for pitches.
e.g.Grantham Arms – usually at Chandlers Ford but come up to use KGV.
In summary the issues are identified as:




There are a number of shared grounds, notably King George V, where early cessation of football pitches
means difficulties in completing the season, especially for cup ties and meeting demand from postponed
matches
With only two floodlit surfaces in Winchester, meeting demand for midweek training is very difficult.
There is expressed demand for additional floodlit synthetic surfaces and indoor training facilities.
There is some conflict over the intensification of use of grass and hard surfaces with local residents,
who object to floodlighting. The Strategy highlights the need for certain sites to be designated as
being of importance to the pitch sports, where intensification (floodlighting, improved changing
facilities) will be supported through the planning system.
Clubs with 2 teams often split between grounds e.g. Upham (Kingsworthy and Upham), Accutec and FC
Exchange
1

League feels that Winchester teams should have priority, and pitches should not be allocated on a ‘first
come, first served’ basis.
Specific sites:

Hampshire CC ground in Chilcomb is used by Winchester City Women’s teams, a senior Saturday side and
hosts some local cup and representative teams but is not generally available to meet demand on a
regular basis from the Winchester Sunday league teams. It has been identified as requiring
improvement
Littleton & Harestock
The Recreation Ground at Littleton caters for local senior and youth teams; no particular problems or issues
have been identified.
Olivers Battery
The pitch here is sloping and not full size; both characteristics which the Parish Council would like to
rectify.
Winchester
Garrison Ground

Home to very popular Winchester Girls Youth FC and Winchester Utd Ladies; sometimes used by other
Winchester Sunday league teams who cannot get a pitch elsewhere..
University

This ground (2 adult football pitches) will be out of action for a while during construction of proposed
athletics track.
King George V
2


6 adult pitches, home to Winchester Saturday and Sunday league sides.
As far as the Winchester Saturday and Sunday Leagues are concerned, there are seven available pitches
for them to use in Winchester – 6 at KGV and 1 at Garrison Ground. There is no problem in
accommodating Saturday sides, but the Sunday league has 3 divisions and many teams (with buoyant
demand), meaning a maximum of 14 teams can be accommodated within the city.
This means the situation is very tight with no spare capacity and little flexibility for:
Accommodating new teams (3 new applications in for next season (2 Sun/1 Sat)
expansion of existing clubs
Meeting increased fixture pressure from cancellations etc
No time for rest & recovery
Sharing of ground with cricket means that pitches at KGV out of action for April and May –
difficulty in meeting fixture schedule. There is a pitch available at Garrison Ground during
this time but it struggles to accommodate all necessary matches. Length of cricket season
also rules out pre-season friendlies.
o Some waterlogging and poor drainage of KGV pitches in winter causes cancellations
o Improvement required to changing rooms/pavilion at KGV
o
o
o
o
o
o

Some concern at loss of adult pitches in favour of mini/junior pitches at North Walls and the Garrison
Ground (now accommodating 7 and 3 mini pitches respectively). The leagues feel this is a short sighted
policy, given that demand from youth and mini sides should translate to demand for larger pitches as
the teams age.

Some play wherever can get a pitch e.g Granley Rovers sometimes at Hunters Park and sometimes at
Hursley IBM

There is currently a ground without a home team at King George V Memorial Ground, Couch End, Itchen
Valley
Cricket
3


No issues identified. Have not been able to ascertain demand for cricket pitches in Winchester.
Existing squares at North Walls and King George V cater for range of friendly and mid week teams.
Poor changing rooms at King George V

St Cross Symondians Cricket Club plays at the Green Jackets Cricket ground in Compton. They feel
that Current council cricket pitches and facilities in Winchester are not up to the required standards
and would like to see one good quality cricket ground and pavilion with modern facilities. They are
currently negotiating to take on long term lease at St Cross, sports development officers at the
Council are aware of this, we will then need major funding and financial support. Keen to see used
by more schools and groups.
Rugby




Play at North Walls Playing Fields and they train at Nuns Road
With a large number of children playing, if there are to many to host on our grounds we have to seek
other areas, in very bad weather we have to seek indoor or astroturf areas
Over use of the main pitch limits its use in poor weather, our other pitches suffer with training areas
being at their base effecting the dead ball area and try lines
Problems with drainage, grass cover and pitch quality
Need funding to improve playing surfaces at Winchester RFC including irrigation for pitch 1
Would like to see a top quality pitch, an AWP and training area at Winchester RFC and an available
indoor area
Hockey
Winchester Hockey Club

Play at Kings School ATP
4







Kings School do not provide what we were looking for hence why we are changing venue for our after
match hospitality
The playing pitch is in good condition although the goals need repair, the shower facilities are
appalling and hardly worth using them
There seems to be a very large focus on football and rugby within Hampshire yet we are one of the
most successful counties in the country and have also produced many national champions through
school and club hockey
Winchester U16 boys themselves were national indoor champions last season and that has brought
many players to the club
We would also like to see good indoor hockey venues, this can be any sports hall really but needs to
have the lines marked on the floor and be able to provide hockey goals
Indoor Hockey is one of the rising stars for England Hockey and will be pushed massively over the
next year culminating in the return of England to the International Indoor competition in Jan 2008 in
Sheffield
If someone were to provide a good training venue now they could stand to make a lot of money
Fleming Park have strong links with Indoor Hockey and I am co-director of a league that runs there on a
Monday night which caters for juniors, ladies and men
Sub Area 2 Kingsworthy Sub Area
FOOTBALL
Caters for village teams and some overflow from Winchester (e.g. Sparsholt FC playing at Sparsholt
College). Current spare pitches at
Crawley

George Phillipi Memorial Sports Ground Play Area is becoming worn and in need of some
replacement
5
Kingsworthy


Poor changing facilities but pitches at Eversley Park make important contribution to supply for both
Saturday and Sunday teams in the Winchester area (both Sat & Sun leagues). Club playing there
says pitches says there is competition for the pitches from other teams in the Winchester area,
suggesting demand not met within Winchester itself.
Junior footballers needs are not met, according to Parish Council. (Hinton Fields may be 2 junior
pitches associated with school, but limited access)
Micheldever


Improvements to both The Warren and Lord Rank Playing Field required. Proposals in hand for
upgrading of Lord Rank pavilion and replacement of pavilion at The Warren.
Team using Lord Rank Playing Field has currently disbanded, and trying to attract another team.
However, problems of access to pavilion which belongs to the former FC.
South Wonston



Parish Council feels that 2 more football pitches needed; the pitches here are intensively used by
range of Sat, Sun and youth sides
Limited changing facilities; Swifts FC need a clubhouse: Pavilion has been identified by Parish
Council as in need of Improved access, disabled toilets, upgrading changing facilities
There is dual community use at the school site already but is inadequate
Sparsholt


No known activity other than at Sparsholt College which has 2 adult football pitches, 1 adult rugby
pitch, a hockey pitch and a hard court marked for tennis. Well used by College
Sparsholt FC (Sat side) play at Sparsholt College – they hire this because the Winchester council
pitches get waterlogged so easily and they cannot fit in all of their home games. Moreover there
are very few floodlit pitches for evening training in the Winchester area
6


Other community have use of the pitches e.g. HRFUW use the rugby pitch 4 times a year. Not sure
about maintaining access and have no spare capacity
Demand for ATP from e.g. Sparsholt College Hockey Team
Wonston

The Gratton Recreation Ground caters for senior Sat & Sun sides. A sports pavilion is needed,
according to the Parish Council and the Grattan Trust is organising this
CRICKET



Just 3 clubs recorded playing at George Phillipi Memorial Sports Ground, Crawley;
Micheldever Cricket Field and Norman Edwards Cricket Ground, Sparsholt. There is also a ground on
MoD land at Worthy Down but not known who plays here.
No particular issues identified.
RUGBY

No teams or pitches, other than Sparsholt College RFC playing at the College (would like an ATP for
training.
HOCKEY

In addition to Kings School ATP, Winchester, Winchester Hockey Club play on the ATP at Worthy Down
so obviously this MoD facility is meeting much needed demands here.
Sub Area 3 New Alresford
FOOTBALL
7
Cheriton



No pitch marked out at recreation ground, as no interest from any team at present. Primary School use
for sports. However, Parish Council identify desire for 5-a-side pitch on recreation field and maybe a
mini rugby pitch
Sports pavilion needs refurbishing or replacing, this can offer the school more space for teaching sports
Newly passed planning application for an AWP (presumably hard court area) at the school, it would be
good for this to be open to the community
Itchen Valley

Poor changing facilities at King George V Memorial Field. There is an adult pitch here but apparently
no team playing here at present; it could make a contribution to meeting demand from Winchester area
and it has been difficult to ascertain exactly why it is not being used.
New Alresford




Perin’s School – Sports College. No information has been forthcoming from the school.
Other
consultation suggests school site is oversubscribed by outside users; the football club train there on the
ATP but Winchester Hockey Club no longer play there as the surface is unsuitable for hockey.
Arlesford Town FC runs 2 Saturday sides from the one senior pitch at Arlebury Park, one in the Wessex
league and 1 in the Combination league. The main town ground also hosts Portsmouth Ladies 3rd team
and representative and cup games for Hants FA – it is a key site for Hants FA which has invested
substantial funds into the pavilion/clubhouse and floodlights.
Arlesford Town FC’s youth teams use the youth pitch at Arlebury Park and the 2 junior pitches at
Stratton Bates.
The club states that the pitches are OK, when the weather is kind; most pitches are used every
weekend. Winter training means they stay off the pitches and pay for the use of astro pitches. There is
a problem with dog fouling and litter at Stratton Bates especially. The club would like to restart its
girls section, but feels that when it was run last year, one of the pitches took a severe hammering. The
club would like to see another pitch at Arlebury Park, more astro pitch facilities for training and more
floodlights in training and playing areas
8


The changing rooms at Stratton Bates are being refurbished.
There is some feeling that local teams around the area may be struggling – apparently Bishops Waltham
FC has dropped out of league.
West Meon

The only other recorded football ground is an adult pitch at Headon Recreation Ground, West Meon,
home to West Meon and Warnford FC fielding two Sunday sides. The club would like to see additional
ATPs on the Winchester/East Hampshire boundary or South Winchester District. Dog fouling on the
pitches is a problem.
RUGBY






The principal issue in this area is the proposed and desired relocation of Alresford RFC from the Bighton
CC ground at Manor Farm
The Parish Council state that Manor Farm needs changing facilities; permission has been granted, but
that the club is likely to be re-locating
Alresford Rugby Football Club currently use the changing facilities at Arlebury Park. Their pitch at
Bighton is two and a half miles out of town and remote from these changing rooms and clubhouse. They
state that the pitch itself is excellent and they very rarely have to call off a game because of problems;
however there is only one pitch in the field, so no opportunity for expansion in to Colts and Minis and
the club are only able to use it due to the largess of the landowner.
The club fields 2 teams at present, with 75 social members. It previously played at Perin’s School but
outgrew the site.
The club is fully supported by Alresford Town Counci which acknowledges the need for rugby pitches in
the town. There is currently a CPO in place to provide two pitches and a training area on an area of
land adjacent to the present Sports and Social Club at Arelbury Park
The club states that it looks forward to one day being able to accommodate younger players (the land is
opposite the local Secondary School) when our pitch is not so remote from the town and the changing
facilities
HOCKEY
9

West Meon & Warnford Hockey Club apparently play at Mill Chase School in Bordon, East Hampshire. The
club states that astro pitches are few and far between and usually fully booked or not of a standard
suitable for the league; they, in common with the rest of the West meon and Warnford Sports Club
would like to see more astro pitches on the Winchester/East Hampshire boundary or South Winchester
District.
Sub Area 4 Bishop’s Waltham
FOOTBALL
Bishops Waltham






The Parish Council refers to poor quality pitches and problems with dog fouling
Main team using Hoe Road is Bishops Waltham Dynamos FC – a flourishing junior club which has upwards
of 15 youth teams. Not all these can be accommodated on 3 pitches (2 large, 1 mini) and so the club
has to seek alternative facilities elsewhere.
The pavilion at Hoe Road has been identified for refurbishment and the one at priory Park for
replacement
Ridgemead Junior School playing fields – opportunity for joint use
A specific space that needs improving is Priory Park, drainage problems
Several groups express the view that an ATP and indoor training facilities are required to service the
southern parishes
Corhampton & Meonstoke
Meonstoke Recreation Ground has a full size, junior and mini pitch, home to Meonstoke FC; no further
information.
Droxford
One pitch at the Recreation Ground; no further information




Pavilion is very old and needs upgrading with toilet facilities
School sports field could be used as kick-about area for children
“We are a small village, but have 3 football teams who use the recreation ground well over the
weekend. Youngsters use the multi-surface court and play area”
Swanmore




Swanmore College of Technology: outdoor facilities include a 4 mini-soccer, 1 junior and 1 adult football
pitch, 1 junior and 1 adult rugby pitch, 2 artificial and 1 grass cricket wickets, a floodlit ATP and a
generic grass field
Need to re- surface the hard court as it is dangerous when wet, and would like to add floodlights
Need to increase the length of ATP to accommodate football and hockey. There is a formal community
use agreement for the ATP, which is sued by Waltham Wolves and Bishops Dynamos FC several times a
week
There are two grounds in Swanmore: Broad Lane (Football & cricket); New Road (football), used by
Waltham Wolves amongst others (WW also use other pitches at Shedfield and Soberton)
Upham

requiring additional expense, i.e. rates, licences, public health.
RUGBY AND HOCKEY

Boarhunt

Full size pitch at Trampers Road – Parish Council says of poor quality with poor quality changing
facilities. An additional pitch is proposed for 2008, and resiting of the Village Hall to another location.
No details of teams playing there.
Denmead




2 full size and 2 junior pitches at Ashling Park – well used by Sunday football sides and many youth
teams. Parish Council states that insufficient football and cricket pitches, need an AWP and more land
for pitches at Ashling Park.
Also King George V Field, Ashling Park: looking for a Saturday side to play here
Poor pitch drainage
Need a muga
12

“Whilst Denmead Parish council makes best use of its open space areas, Denmead is a very sporting
area and requires more land and facilities. Experience has proved that the very small areas provide
small benefit for the cost incurred in maintenance”
Hambledon

There is no football pitch in Hambledon, but demand has been expressed.
Soberton


One pitch recorded at Soberton Heath Recreation Ground, but think there must be junior/mini as
well as this ground hosts a Sunday league side and up to 13 youth sides (Waltham Wolves Youth)
No other information forthcoming (no response from Parish Council)
Southwick & Widley


Only football pitch recorded is on MoD land at MWS Southwick Park. No other details.
However, Parish Council state no other facilities or space required.

Colden Common

Two sites at Colden Common Park and Recreation Ground have football pitches catering for a variety of
youth, senior and Vets teams. No issues with these grounds have been identified and they appear to
be sufficient for the teams using them.
Compton & Shawford

There are two adult pitches at the Memorial Playing Field and one junior pitch at Compton Street. The
only issue identified by main club – Compton FC - is dog fouling of the pitches.
Hursley

One pitch at Hursley Recreation Ground and 2 pitches at the IBM Sports Ground. Poor changing facilities
identified by the Parish Council at the Recreation Ground. The pitches at IBM are used by a Sunday
league side.
Otterbourne

Football pitch at Oakwood Recreation Ground, used by Otterbourne FC Saturday side.
Owlesbury

Two pitches at Owlesbury Recreation Ground used by Owlesbury FC (Saturday side). No issues
identified.
Twyford

There is a senior and mini pitches at Hunters Park, used by Saturday and Sunday teams. Twyford Rovers
find the pitches quite satisfactory. Apparently, there are a few junior teams which also wish to use the
ground, but with only one adult pitch this is not possible.
14


The club believe that more pitches are needed n the Winchester area, with more money spent on the
facilities that we have and more care taken over the playing surfaces
Over recent years a number of pitches have become unavailable and the facilities that accompany those
pitches have steadily deteriorated.
CRICKET
There are 8 cricket pitches hosting upwards of 25 teams between them.

The only issue so far identified is that the cricket pitch at Southern Water may be withdrawn by owners
because of increased site security, this would result in no adult cricket facilities in the village of
Otterbourne.
Sub Area 7 Wickham
Curdridge

Junior pitch at Botley Road and full size at Reading Room Recreation Ground. Parish Council cites both
as poor quality. At Botley Road, proposals to improve land drainage and provide changing rooms Main
team using Reading Room Recreation Ground is not known.
Shedfield
15

One full size pitch and mini pitch at Shedfield Recreation Ground, used by Waltham Wolves (Sat and
Sun) and full range of youth teams, girls and boys. Waltham Chase and the Triangle Recreation
Grounds both have a mini soccer pitch, and there is a kickwall and informal use for cricket and football
at Shirrell Heath. The Recreation Ground can cope at the moment, but there is a lot of emphasis on
providing facilities for youth, which may exert pressure for full size facilities soon.
Wickham


2 adult pitches at Wickham Recreation Ground, used by Wickham Dynamos and Wickham Utd.
The Parish Council states more pitches are required and improved changing facilities at the Recreation
Ground. More pitches are proposed for development over next 4 years at The Knowle.


The Whiteley community feel disassociated with Winchester and do not necessarily connect the
provision of sports and open space facilities with the City Council.
Sports facilities are used over a wide area – the majority being outside of Winchester District.
However this is governed by the location of particular forms of sports teams. Leisure facilities
generally are just as likely to be accessed in towns and cities to the south of the Winchester District
as within it. In this group, no facilities in Winchester were used.
Information on local sports and open space facilities isn’t good.
Public transport is poor and young people will use facilities that can be accessed in this way – e.g.
Portsmouth.
Drainage is a major problem in the area (Whiteley). This results in the cancelling of matches and
makes the need for all-weather pitches more pressing.
There is a real shortage of outdoor sports pitches across the area.
The shortage of pitches, and the extension of the football season is leading to a clash between
cricket and football where they take place in the same venue.
There is a need to access changing facilities where schools allow use of outdoor pitches.
There is a need for a more local swimming pool.
Many village halls and other community buildings may not be suitable for hosting indoor sports
activities.
There is some evidence of a need for facilities for hockey, volleyball and basketball.
Football – floodlit areas needed.
The community are willing to travel a considerable distance to access facilities but this preference is
as likely to be based on practice as need.
