Rion Pierre was born in Jamaica and moved to England with his family when he was five years old. At first he did not enjoy school and also had problems with his weight, but when he discovered sport he started to enjoy school much more as he particularly enjoyed P.E., as well as gaining more confidence and motivation and getting in shape. He discovered that he was talented at many sports, amongst them football; he was signed to Chelsea FC’s youth team, but was dropped from the squad at age 14, as they did not consider him to be tall or strong enough to keep competing for the team at that level. Rion Pierre Undeterred, Rion became even more determined to succeed, and joined an athletics club. Here it was noticed that he had an especial talent for sprinting, and his running career began to take off. Within a couple of years he had become the Under-17 100 metre record holder for Middlesex, and also became the English School’s Gold Medallist. He went on to become the AAA’s National Junior 200-metre champion and then the Under-23 AAA’s 100-metre champion. As well as attending the Harefield Academy, a sports-specialist college, Rion also completed a degree in Biomechanics at Brunel University, achieving First Class Honours. Throughout his time at Brunel he continued to train for his athletics, but unfortunately missed out on competing in the European Championships and the Commonwealth Games because of injury. However, he was not deterred and got back on track with training hard for the London 2012 Olympic Games in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay events. Unfortunately he was unable to compete in the end, due to injury. Rion has benefitted from the coaching and mentorship of the legendary Linford Christie, who invited Rion to be part of his sprint squad alongside Commonwealth Champion Mark-Lewis Francis and World Bronze medallist Laura Turner. 2
