J. Brady, Lieutenant, Australian Imperial Force, for extraordinary heroism in action east of Busigny, France,

October 18 to 20, 1918. Lieutenant Brady, in command of a forward section of artillery, pushed his guns in advance in close support of the Infantry. In crossing the La Selle

River the fire of his guns silenced numerous machine-gun positions and aided the Infantry to advance. This action took place when fighting alongside the American 27th

Division.



4, 1918. Early in the advance his company was held up by fire from a machine-gun post. Sergeant Caddy with great bravery charged the position, bayoneted the crew, thus enabling his company to advance. This action took place when fighting alongside the American 27th Division.



Errington, Sergeant, Australian Imperial Force, for extraordinary heroism in action near Bellicourt, France,

September 29, 1918. When his company was halted by machine-gun fire, Sergeant Errington with two comrades rushed the enemy position and captured the machine gun.

Later the same day he rushed a second machine gun, capturing the gun and killing three of the crew. This action took place in conjunction with the attack of the

30th U.S. Division.



Morisset, Captain, Australian Imperial Force, for extraordinary heroism in action at Nauroy, France,

September 29, 1918. During the advance following the capture of Bellicourt, Captain Morisset, acting battalion adjutant, observed that flanking troops had failed to advance, leaving a gap in the line. On his own initiative, he gathered several detachments of troops under heavy machine-gun fire and deployed them, covering the threatened gap. His prompt and courageous conduct contributed to the success of the operations in which the

30th U.S. Division was engaged.



Organizing troops from different units, Sergeant Rodakis exhibited great bravery and dash in leading them into effective combat, inspiring all by his courage and fearlessness.



Later on, when warning was received of an impending enemy counterattack, he displayed great coolness and good judgment under heavy fire in selecting positions for his guns. 

Wood two of the enemy were captured. This action took place when fighting alongside the American 27th

Division.



Citation:

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Robert S.

Birkinshaw, Sergeant, British Expeditionary Forces, for extraordinary heroism in action at Selency, France,

September 24, 1918. Sergeant Birkinshaw repeatedly led attacks against a strongly defended barricade at the entrance to Selency. The ultimate capture of this position was due to the determination and personal gallantry of this noncommissioned officer. This action took place when fighting alongside the American 27th Division.




Resident of England fire and on several occasions showed contempt for danger in entering dugouts and tunnels which were suspected of being mined by the enemy. During the advance he attacked and captured an enemy machine gun and six men. This action took place in conjunction with the attack of the 30th U.S. Division.



B. Dodwell, Second Lieutenant, British Expeditionary

Forces, for extraordinary heroism in action near Bruges,

Belgium, August 13, 1918. This officer and his pilot led two other machines on along photographic mission over the area north of Bruges. Over Thourout they were attacked by six enemy planes. While heavily engaged,

Lieutenant Dodwell and his pilot saw one of their machines in difficulty and trying to make our lines with an enemy plane close at its tail. Regardless of their own danger from the remaining planes, they dived to the assistance of the crippled plane. Taking advantage of their preoccupation, several enemy planes attacked from the rear; but, in spite of this rear attack, they drove off the enemy plane and allowed the damaged plane to land within our fines. Half of the tail plane was shot away, but

Lieutenant Dodwell climbed along the wing and lay down along the cowling in front of the pilot, enabling the pilot to regain partial control of his machine. When nearing the ground, he crawled back into the cockpit to allow the nose to rise, and the pilot made a safe landing. The presence of mind and cool courage of this officer saved the machine from crashing to the ground.



American troops. On one occasion, when Major Little was forming his battalion for the attack, the enemy put down a heavy barrage, inflicting many casualties.

Regardless of the heavy enemy fire, this officer reassured his men and then gallantly led them in a successful attack.

Citation:

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to John T.

McNamee, Captain, British Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while attached to the 1st Battalion, 30th

Gas Regiment, USA. Volunteering, Captain McNamee led a detachment of Engineers up to the front lines on July

30, 1918, for the purpose of assisting the advance of the infantry with thermite and smoke bombs. That night he led his men through a heavy barrage, exhibiting courage and leadership. For three days and nights he remained with his men in the extreme front line in the Bois Colas, greatly aiding in repulsing enemy counterattacks by laying down barrages of thermite and phosphorus, cleaning out machine-gun nests in the same manner and enabling our infantry to attack behind smoke screens. On

August 5 he took another detachment into St. Thibaut and brought ammunition into the village before it was occupied by our infantry and while the enemy patrols were still there. The advance of the infantry across the two rivers, the Ourcq and the Vesle, was greatly facilitated and the lives of many of them saved by the smoke screens which Captain McNamee so successfully prepared. Throughout this entire advance across these two rivers he conducted himself with extraordinary heroism, setting an example to the men of the regiment to which he was attached, constantly exposing himself to danger in making reconnaissance and at the same time shielding his men.



Belgium, August 30 and 31, 1918. While in command of an accompanying gun, Lieutenant Munday advanced in close support of the attack of the 106th American

Infantry. With a signaler, he made a daring reconnaissance in advance of our lines and returned with valuable information. In an encounter with an enemy patrol near Rossignol Wood two of the enemy were captured.



Lieutenant Rice went forward during the advance under a heavy barrage of rifle and machine-gun fire and cut paths in the wire in order to further the advance of his company. Having cut the wire, with two men he rushed a machine-gun position, capturing the gun, and forcing six of the enemy to surrender. This action took place when fighting alongside the American 27th Division.



Underwood, Lance-Corporal, British Army, for extraordinary heroism in action during the attack on

Riquerval Woods, France, October 11, 1918. While acting as a platoon scout in advance of his platoon, Corporal

Underwood suddenly encountered a post of nine

Germans. He fearlessly engaged them until his platoon arrived. His courageous action not only saved his platoon from being ambushed but enabled it to reach its objective with slight loss. This action took place in conjunction with the attack of the 30th U.S. Division.



Woodcock, Private, British Expeditionary Forces, for extraordinary heroism in action near Brancourt, France,

October 8, 1918. While acting as a runner to the 30th U.S.

Division, Private Woodcock with a companion passed through heavy enemy machine-gun and artillery fire to deliver an important message. His companion was killed, but he continued on and completed his mission, which made possible a successful combined attack with the 30th

U.S. Division on a strong enemy position.



Andral, Lieutenant, French Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Dun-sur-Meuse, France, October

30, 1918. Lieutenant Andral distinguishing himself by his constant bravery and brilliance as an observer. Lieutenant

Andral rendered valiant service, flying at times under most hazardous conditions. Many times he returned from low-flying patrols with his machine riddled with bullets.

He attacked and drove from its mission an enemy observation plane. In the fight that ensued he proved unequal to such an adversary and was killed.





Carrere, Corporal, French Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Ammertzmiller, Alsace, July 1,

1918, while serving under the command of an American divisional commander. When the advance posts were ordered to withdraw and join the combat groups in anticipation of a raid, Corporal Carrere and the four men of his squad were cut off by the enemy barrage. This little group made a stand and by the use of an automatic rifle and grenades repulsed the attack made on them by two parties of Germans, each party estimated to be between 15 and 20 men. Corporal Carrere displayed splendid courage and initiative, especially in exploring the surrounding terrain. Although completely isolated, he and his men continued the resistance against the enemy until they finally drove them back. To him and to his four men, to whom he knew how to communicate his spirit, is due the credit for the failure of the raid, although it was supported by heavy artillery and executed in force.



September 12, 1918. While Major Chanoine's group was advancing to attack with the 1st Brigade of American

Tanks his leading tank became stalled, and this officer left his post of command and went forward to direct its repair.

While he was so engaged the enemy opened fire, and one shell struck the disabled tank, killing and wounding 15 men and knocking Major Chanoine unconscious. Upon regaining consciousness Major Chanoine refused to be carried to the rear but continued his work under fire until it was possible for the tanks to continue their advance, when he led his group forward on foot for a distance of 8 kilometers, remaining on duty throughout the engagement.



This act was accomplished in spite of being under terrific machine-gun fire and heavy antiaircraft artillery fire from the ground, his plane being shattered with bullets.



When communication service had been broken between the brigade commander and the two front-line battalions of his brigade, due to the enemy's terrific fire which made it impossible to maintain either Signal Corps installations or runner service, Captain Drouhin at the critical moment volunteered to make his way across a gap between the two battalions in order to carry orders to the commanding officers thereof. His services on this occasion cannot be over-estimated and were accomplished voluntarily and only at the most deadly risk to himself.



Lieutenant Drouhin voluntarily went each day to reconnoiter the first position, observe the advance, and to secure liaison with neighboring units, fearlessly exposing himself to the severest artillery and machine-gun fire. On

September 29 he entered the enemy positions east of

Ardeuil, located the machine-gun nests which were holding up the advance, traversed an open field swept by the fire of these guns to reach the liaison officer of artillery, and to give him the objective. Throughout the operations he rendered invaluable assistance to the regimental commander, and his energy and courage were an inspiration to the entire regiment.



Ehrhardt's duty to go into action with the forward elements of the regiment, but he insisted upon doing so.

Undaunted by a wound in the left arm, caused by a bursting shell, he continued to advance in the face of very intense shell fire. He was again struck down by a shell fragment which shattered his right arm, but he rose and followed the regimental commander into the shell-swept area. He was knocked down a third time by shell fragments, from which he received wounds in the back so severe in character that he was unable to rise, later receiving additional wounds in the body.



Although he was himself seriously wounded, he sustained the unequal fight until his observer was killed by the fire of the attacking aircraft. When no further defense was left to him, he made a successful retreat into the allied lines and landed safely.

Suffering severely from his wound and too weak to leave the pilot's seat without assistance, he insisted that his observer be cared for before permitting anyone to aid him.



Passing through a heavy artillery barrage, he led two small tanks into action in an effort to overcome the enemy's resistance, and personally charged a machine-gun nest with his pistol, killing one of the gunners and capturing the other two. The two small tanks proving to be inadequate, this officer went back through the barrage and brought up eight large tanks, leading them on foot in the open under intense shell fire and direct machine-gun fire. He maneuvered these tanks so skillfully that the subsequent capture of the stronghold of Cheppy by the infantry was made possible.



Under fire these two officers reconnoitered the front lines, locating the position of the enemy, as well as that of the French units on the flank, and returned across the open with complete, reliable, and timely information of the highest military value in subsequent operations.

France, August 7, 1918, while serving as liaison officer with the 2d Battalion, 47th U.S. Infantry, which led the attack against the enemy in the face of stubborn resistance, crossed the Vesle River, seized a critical position north of that stream, and held tenaciously to it throughout the day. Lieutenant Mallet, under a heavy and continuous hostile fire, repeatedly went from one frontline combat group to another, assisting materially in the successful conduct of the action by his courageous actions, suggestions, and professional skill. He rendered highly important services at a critical moment when the left of the line was sorely pressed by enemy counterattack and at all times by his soldierly conduct, inspiring courage, and high qualities of leadership was an heroic example to his comrades in arms. He was killed in action late in the afternoon.



July 18, 1918. Under heavy enemy shellfire Marechal des

Logis Verry volunteered to lead a liaison patrol for the purpose of establishing liaison with French units on the left. He and three American soldiers were killed by shellfire after advancing only a few yards on this perilous mission.



Lieutenant Viaud led a French-American detachment in a raid with the greatest coolness and bravery, displaying leadership and resourcefulness. When counterattacked by a strong German force he maintained his ground and repulsed the enemy.



France, July 18, 1918. Upon the arrival of the 9th Infantry in the Chateau-Thierry sector June 1, 1918, Captain

Vivien assisted in placing several companies in position and established liaison with the French. At this time the position of the enemy was unknown. Captain Vivien performed this act of great risk of being captured by the enemy. In the attack south of Soissons Captain Vivien assisted in re-forming the line and reorganizing combat groups after the attack on the German positions.



Lieutenant Wackernie constantly distinguished himself by his extraordinary heroism in voluntarily going through heavy machine-gun fire in order to secure and give important information which could not otherwise be communicated.



Wichart, Second Lieutenant of Infantry, French Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Monthois, France,

September 27 to October 7, 1918. During the attack on

Monthois Second Lieutenant Wichart voluntarily undertook the most hazardous missions, fearlessly traversing ground swept by machine-gun fire and severe bombardment to secure liaison between neighboring

French units and to reconnoiter our first line positions.

His reports were invaluable. On the night of October 2 he led a battalion to its position of attack and personally reconnoitered the line under intense machine-gun and artillery fire, furnishing a splendid example of coolness and utter disregard of danger to the men of the battalion.



1918. Captain Collison acted as artillery observer in an advance against the enemy, which was continuous over several hours and at all times under very heavy artillery and machine-gun fire. He not only accompanied the advance troops, but at times went ahead of them, in order better to direct the fire of the American troops. At one time, when by a rapid advance of a portion of our troops, they were within the danger zone of our own fire, telephone communication having been cut, Captain

Collison returned through the enemy barrage and taking a position in the open and under fire signaled a warning to our artillery. By this particularly brave and daring act the success of the American Infantry in this engagement was assured.



Sergeant Howarth gallantly led his platoon in five successive attacks upon a strongly fortified line of blockhouses. During the withdrawal he exposed himself to heavy fire in order to direct the fire of a Lewis gun crew in order to secure the safe evacuation of his wounded.



While moving forward in command of a support company, Captain Smyrden encountered a disorganized

Russian company in full retreat. Quickly reorganizing two platoons of this force, and with his own company, he launched a successful counterattack which reestablished the firing line in the original position. He then launched a new attack, which drove the enemy into their line of blockhouses. The coolness and courage of this officer was a great inspiration to his men.



This brilliant officer was killed at Bolsheozerka, Russia, March 19, 1919, while defending with a small force his position, which was repeatedly attacked by three battalions of the enemy.


