INTRODUCTION AND INSTRUCTIONS

This is an official Circular of the Gauteng Department of Education that replaces Circular 99/99 and

Circular 7/2002. It identifies, in keeping with guidelines from the National Department of Education, all the setworks for all languages to be used by Grade12 learners in 2002 and 2003. The titles of setworks for all official languages will remain the same. Titles of certain foreign languages have been replaced. This circular applies to both full-time and part-time candidates. Please read this

Circular in conjunction with Circulars 49/2001 and 17/2002.

PRIMARY (FIRST) LANGUAGES (Higher Grade and Standard Grade)

1. There are four compulsory sections:

 Section A : Poetry

 Section B : Drama

 Section C : Novel

 Section D : Portfolio Assessment : Short stories/ film study/ Folklore

2.

Sections A, B and C will be assessed in the external examination. (Paper 2: Literature will be for full-time and part-time candidates.)

3.

Section D: Full-time candidates only

(Part of) Portfolio (school-based) Assessment:

- African languages: Short stories or folklore

- Afrikaans: Choice between two anthologies of short stories

- English: Short stories or Film Study

Part-time candidates only

(Part of) Paper 3: External Examination

- English: Short stories or Film Study

- Afrikaans: Choice between two anthologies of short stories

ADDITIONAL (SECOND) LANGUAGES (Higher Grade and Standard Grade)

 There are FOUR/FIVE Sections. Schools may choose ANY TWO of these sections.

 The prescribed genres are poetry, drama (not prescribed for Afrikaans), novel, short stories, folklore (not prescribed for English and Afrikaans). There is no generic lay-out to the sections for the different languages.

 No literary component is included in the CASS portfolio for the Second Languages.

 There is no literary component in paper 3 (part-time candidates)

4.1 ENGLISH PRIMARY (FIRST) LANGUAGE (HG, SG)

There are four compulsory sections, and a choice will have to be made from sections A,B, C and D.

Section D will be PART OF PORTFOLIO ASSESSMENT IN SCHOOLS.

In sections B and C there will be a contextual and an essay type question on each text. Students will have to answer one contextual and one essay question.

SECTION A: PRESCRIBED AND SOUTH AFRICAN POETRY

Section A is Poetry. There is a choice. Whilst the unseen poem for HG is compulsory, learners have a choice of 2 out of 4 seen poems. SG-learners have a choice of 2 out of 4 seen poems.

POETRY REQUIREMENTS:

 2 out of 4 seen poems

Part Two: South African poetry

Candidates should also study a selection of poems written in this century by South African poets representative of all population groups. The total number of lines studied should not exceed 200 for the Higher Grade and 150 for the Standard Grade respectively.

In dealing with this section, teachers are urged to bear in mind the diversity of poetry to be found in the set anthologies. Specific poets are not to be recommended, thus allowing teachers to make personal choices. Candidates could be encouraged to study independently, reading further in those areas (or exploring those poets) to which they are attracted. In making a selection teachers should, however, bear in mind that certain poets have come to greater prominence than others. Such poets bear closer investigation. Poems in this section will be examined either as contextuals or candidates may choose to answer a mini essay on a certain concern (theme) related to a set poem(s).

The final examinations will test the candidate's ability to apply the skills learnt in the classroom to the poems that will appear in the question paper. Candidates will not be questioned on the poet, his life or overall literary contribution. The examination question will focus on the poetic text, not the poet. In essence, the poems appearing in this section will be "unseen" and it is envisaged that learners will have become familiar with those issues that occur most frequently in the poetry of this century.

As a guide, the selection chosen for study should incorporate the following areas or themes:

 The natural beauty of the country, with its abundant wildlife and scenery.

 Western man's encounter with the harsh reality of the Southern African landscape.

 The diversity of people and their cultures that constitute the many facets of life in South Africa; the need to function together and live in harmony with one another.

 The politics of South Africa, including the struggle for freedom on the part of Black people. This includes what has become known as "Protest" or "Liberation" poetry written during the apartheid years.

The unseen section of the poetry section will include poems not studied as part of the above syllabus. These could, however, be drawn from any source, including South African poets.

In order to enable the candidates to comprehend the unprepared passages from Caesar with comparative ease, a minimum of 250 lines taken from Caesar’s Gallic and/or Civil Wars must be read during the Grade 12 year.
