CCDI Background
The Provincial Administration of the Western Cape (PAWC) and the Cape Technikon established
the Cape Craft & Design Institute, a Section 21, in November 2001. It received significant
kick-start funding from the national Department of Arts & Culture. It is housed in the Faculty of
the Built Environment & Design of the Cape Technikon.
The Institute has its roots in a research study conducted by the provincial Department of
Economic Affairs, Agriculture & Tourism to ascertain the strengths and weaknesses and needs of
the sector and to inform a strategic development framework. The study found that design and
product development support, marketing, technical, and business skills development and access
to markets, financial assistance, and information were the main needs of the sector.
