The DSE Championships Grantham 11 – 12 July 2011 The DSE championships had a real Great Britain feel to it with both Welsh and Scots squads taking part over the weekend of June 11 and 12th . Wales came away with a gold medal in the ladies wheelchair Open (Rebekah Evans ) and a silver in the Wheelchair Doubles (Ashley Davies / Vaughan Williams). Scotland also returned home with medals with 2 silvers from Peter Cameron in the Mens Standing Open and the Mens Class 6-7 Singles – an excellent performance in his first major disability table tennis event. It was good to see the return of Ernest Charlemagne ( London) following an absence of a few years due to ill health. Ernest and Farrel Anthony (South Yorkshire) took the gold in the Standing Doubles and Ernst had a great win over his doubles partner, Farrel, in the quarter-finals of the Mens Standing Open Singles . In the semi-final, he lost to Paul Waumsley (South East) , who went on to take the gold , beating Peter Cameron ( Scotland ), in a very closely contested final in 4 games. Paul Waumsley had a great championships for besides taking the gold in the Open, he also beat Ernest again in the final of the Class 8-10 to take another gold and then added a silver to his collection by reaching the standing doubles final with Philip Sangchin (South East), losing to Ernest and Farrel. Shaun Newcomb took gold in his 3 wheelchair events winning the Open Singles, the doubles with Jack Pegram (South East ) and the Class 4-5 event. Roger Hales (South Yorkshire) had a good win over Jack in the final of the Class 1-3 event to take the gold medal. Victoria Bromley (West Midlands) dominated the ladies events winning the class 11 and the Ladies Standing Open. Adam Thompson( North East) as expected took the gold in the class 11 singles. Patrick Cox (East Midlands ) showed his continued progress with a good win over Simon Green in the semi-final to reach the final of this event The player of the tournament was awarded to young Euan McLaughlin from Scotland. Euan commented on winning his award: “This is the first time I’ve attended the DSE Championships in Grantham.
