American Indian Higher Education Consortium, an organization of 35 Indiancontrolled colleges in the United States and Canada. It is published with
assistance from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and the American Indian College
Fund. Culture-based publication which addresses subjects important to the future
of American Indian and Alaska Native communities utilizing both journalistic and
scholarly articles.
Tribal Colleges & Universities (TCUs)
TCUs were created in response to the higher education needs of American Indians
and generally serve geographically isolated populations that have no other means
accessing education beyond the high school level. TCUs have become
increasingly important to educational opportunity for native American students
and are unique institutions that combine personal attention with cultural relevance
to encourage American Indians—especially those living on reservations—to
overcome the barriers they face to higher education. Listing of Tribal Colleges at

The Montana Advisory Council on Indian Education has been established by the
Office of Public Instruction and the Board of Public Education to act in an
advisory role to them in matters affecting the education of Indian students in
Montana. Montana Advisory Council on Indian Education shall advocate for
greater cooperation among tribal, state and federal organizations, institutions,
groups and agencies for the express purpose of promoting high-quality education
and equal educational opportunity for Montana's Indian students.
“We hope that by encouraging young American Indians to honor themselves, their
minds, their bodies and their talents, that they will also honor their families, their
tribal nations and their communities. American Indian youth can create their own
path to success by working hard, staying in school, setting positive goals, and
following their dreams.”

ACF is the federal agency funding state, territory, local, and tribal organizations
to provide family assistance (TANF), child support, child care, Head Start, child
welfare, and other programs relating to children and families. Actual services are
provided by tribal, state, county, or city governments, and public and private local
grantees. ACF assists service providers through funding, policy direction, and
information services.
Federally recognized tribes may apply directly to HHS to operate a TANF block
grant program. Like states, tribes may use their TANF funding in any manner
reasonably calculated to accomplish the purposes of TANF. Tribal TANF funds
are directly subtracted from the state TANF grant and tribal grants require no
matching funds.
ACF is committed to supporting programs and activities that prevent the
occurrence and recurrence of abuse of Native American children. We directly
fund tribes and tribal organizations for child abuse and neglect prevention efforts
through the ACF Children’s Bureau. More information is available at
cbexpress.acf.hhs.gov.
With the publication of Final Rules and Regulations for Tribal Child Support
Enforcement in March 2004, Tribes and Tribal organizations can choose to
operate a Title IV-D Tribal Child Support Enforcement Program.

It is the mission of the Two Spirit Society of Denver to strive to restore and
revitalize the traditional role of Two Spirited persons. In Native American
history, gay, lesbian, and/or transgender individuals are considered sacred and
treated with the utmost respect. They are the historians, healers, and people of
empowerment. They possessed the delicate balance of male and female, and are
honored for being distinctive and having a different spiritual calling. For their
tribes, they are the mediators between the spirit world and the natural world. They
are known in their separate languages as “naadle” (nad le) Diné, “winkte” (winkday) Lakota, and “bade” (bah-day) from the Hidatsa language.
In 1999 the Two Spirit Society of Denver formed to confront and combat
homophobia, racism and oppression. Since, then our organization has refined our
programs to address and educate issues on the effects of “historical trauma“,
colonization and acculturation within the Native American communities. Our
education targets the Native, non-Native American communities and the LGBT
community at large.

ACF is the federal agency funding state, territory, local, and tribal organizations
to provide family assistance (TANF), child support, child care, Head Start, child
welfare, and other programs relating to children and families. Actual services are
62
provided by tribal, state, county, or city governments, and public and private local
