The Centre for Criminology at the University of South Wales is seeking to appoint two permanent Lecturers in
Criminology/Criminal Justice.
Those appointed will join an established team of 12 criminologists that consistently perform strongly in terms of external
research recognition and in benchmarks for the quality of their teaching provision, notably in the National Student
Survey.
The successful candidates will, with support from established staff, be primarily responsible for delivery of modules on
the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. As such, candidates will have experience of delivering courses in
criminology and/or criminal justice at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels. In the first instance teaching will be on
modules already being delivered at the Centre for Criminology. Opportunities will subsequently develop for the post
holders to design and deliver specialist modules.
Candidates with strong established or emergent research profiles, and with experience of teaching across a range of
criminological topics, and of providing support to students, are particularly invited to apply. The Centre is particularly
interested in the post-holders extending expertise in penology and /or other specialisms. A PhD (or near completion) or
an equivalent publication record, or equivalent relevant senior professional experience in Criminology or Criminal
Justice is required.

Responsible to:
Head of Criminology
Main Purpose of Job:
The Lecturer in Criminology will contribute to the delivery of an effective teaching and scholarly experience for the
University’s students, and to help further its ambitions in research and knowledge transfer by
delivering and assessing modules delivered by the Centre for Criminology
contributing to the administration of modules and criminology awards more generally
undertaking research and scholarly activity
promoting the reputation of the School, Faculty and University
Principal Responsibilities and Duties:
 Undertake module leadership as appropriate to level of experience in role (new starters maybe exempt from
this element until more experienced) and develop own teaching materials, methods and approaches with
guidance where necessary
 Teach on established courses of study, including team teaching, engaging students with lectures, tutorials,
seminars, etc. and to contribute to the maintenance and development of existing modules and awards
 Utilise effective assessment instruments and ensure adequate, detailed feedback to students is provided
 Engage with quality assessments, e.g. Subject review, module evaluation, annual monitoring
 Supervise the work of students in areas such as projects, fieldwork and placements
 Communicate effectively with colleagues and students through internal networks, and the sharing of ideas and
information
 Attend subject/award boards as required
 Participate in professional duties such as Faculty Open Days and other recruitment activities as appropriate
 Undertake appropriate levels of pastoral care for students ensuring interpersonal skills are adequately
developed
 Undertake continuous personal and professional development which ensures full fitness to practice in the role
of lecturer
 Comply with University policies relating to health and safety, equality of opportunity and data management
 Any other duties as maybe assigned from time to time commensurate with the grade and as required by the
Head of School, Associate Head of School/Head of Subject or Dean of Faculty.
 Teach on and assess modules contributing to taught programmes in criminology
 Contribute to curriculum and other administration as appropriate

EXPERIENCE
