Dear all,
Today, two in three of the world’s 781 million illiterate adults are women. A further 58
million children of primary school age are not in school, and 63 million adolescents of lower
secondary school age are also missing out their right to an education, running the risk of
creating a new generation of illiterates.
For UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova, “this unacceptable situation is holding back all
efforts to reduce poverty and advance sustainable, human development.”
The theme of International Literacy Day 2014 is “Literacy and Sustainable Development”.
Literacy is one of the key elements needed to promote sustainable development, as it
empowers people so that they can make the right decisions in the areas of economic
growth, social development and environmental integration. Literacy is a basis for lifelong
learning and plays a crucial foundational role in the creation of sustainable, prosperous and
peaceful societies.

Living in an environment of peace and security is fundamental to human dignity and
development. Global Citizenship is key to world peace, and peace is essential for sustainable
development.
Both Global Citizenship Education and Education for Sustainable Development aim to
achieve and preserve a peaceful and sustainable living-together as ultimate goal.
The International Peace Day will be celebrated on 21 September under the theme “right of
peoples to peace”, selected to mark the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration
on the Right of Peoples to Peace by the United Nations.
We invite you to celebrate Peace Day and take action at your school!
 Keep one minute of silence and light a candle to give a momentum to world
peace.
 Discuss and tell us in words or pictures what the “Right of Peoples to Peace”
means to you personally and for your community.


The international community is called upon to celebrate two important United Nations
International Days that aim at shaping a world where all people can enjoy decent lives
within inclusive, equitable and sustainable communities.
 16 October 2014 - World Food Day: “Family Farming: Feeding the world, protecting the planet”;
 17 October 2014 - International Day for the Eradication of Poverty: "Do not leave anyone out: think, decide and act
together against poverty".
This represents an opportunity for ASPnet worldwide to raise awareness about
the significant role of world citizens in taking care of our Earth andcontributing to the
eradication of poverty.
We, therefore, invite you to observe these International Days at your school and share your
activities on the ASPnet in Action online collaborative

 Discuss in class how cultural traditions and practices can help improve
educational opportunities and food supply for the poorest children, and
send us your results.
 Set up an exchange fair in your class or school and bring old books, toys
and other items which you don’t use any more to benefit your classmates.
 Organize a solidarity meal for homeless or disadvantaged people in
your community.
 Interview family farmers in your area and take pictures of their living
environment.

World Science Day for Peace and
Development is celebrated annually on 10
November tohighlight the importance of a
responsible use of science for the benefit of
society, and the need to inform and involve
citizens in science. This year’s theme is
“Quality Science Education - ensuring a
sustainable future for all”.
Quality science education tackles both global
and local challenges, and it is vital to lay the
foundations for a more sustainable future for
all. Educational policies should give equal
access to girls and boys to resources and
laboratories. Traditional and indigenous
knowledge must be recognized, all while
taking advantage of new information and
communication technologies (ICT) for innovation and creativity.
The ASPnet in Action Team has the pleasure to convene you to take action for a
better society of tomorrow!
 Organize a science museum visit and make a report on how science and
technology affect our daily lives.
 Describe the scientific invention which, in your opinion, has been
a milestone for humanity and tell us how it helps to become a global citizen.
 Ask your grandparents or elderly people in your community and find out
what their daily life looked like when they were younger. How would they,
without internet, mobile phone or television, communicate with friends or
stay in touch with relatives?
 Get connected with a partner school via the internet and develop a joint
science project.

and challenges our world is facing. Change forces us to find new ways of living together and
building fairer and more sustainable societies.

a collective exercise of critical and creative thinkingin your class on how children play an

The ASPnet in Action Team would like to invite you to celebrate Human Rights Day taking
place today, 10 December.
Promoting human rights must start with human rights education (HRE). Teaching the values
of respect, tolerance and solidarity is essential to empower learners and to foster new forms
of global citizenship.
The basis of HRE is the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the UN General
Assembly on 10 December 1948 as the first universal instrument recognizing the inherent
dignity of every member of the human family and marking the start of concerted global
efforts to realize human rights in all circumstances.
Take a moment to discuss in class ways of how to promote and raise awareness on human
rights issues!

Global citizenship refers to a sense of belonging to the global community and common
humanity, with its members experiencing solidarity, collective responsibility and identity
among themselves.
The sharing of experiences and good practices – be it about how to prevent risks, protect
our cultural heritage or our environment – forms a very important part of such solidarity.
International solidarity is also the basis for dialogue, the eradication of poverty and lasting
peace, as stated inthe Millennium Declaration.
