SOS 101 INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLOGY (3 0 3)
Basic principles, concepts and theories of sociology. Social structure
and stratification, social organisations, social phenomena. Social
mobility and theories of social change.
SHO 125 FIELD EXPERIENCE IN SOCIAL WORK SETTINGS (1 2 2)
Students visit different social service agencies i.e. squatter housing and
villages to obtain information.The field reports are written and group
discussions enable them to share their reports.
SHO 107 INTRODUCTION TO LAW AND POLITICAL SCIENCE (3 0 3)
Society and law, the definition, classification and basis of law, rights,
competency, personality, family, kinship, legal procedures, conventions,
law courts, constitutional state, social state. The concept and the
characteristics of politics, political science, state and government, elites
and masses, political parties, lobbies, public opinion, political thoughts,
political systems.

Historical development of social work profession in Turkey and the

The sets, numbers, functions and graphs, matrices, system of equations
and their solutions. Limit, continuity, differentiation.
TKD 103 TURKISH LANGUAGE I (2 0 2)
Definition of language, its function in the life of a nation, languageculture relationship. Historical development of the Turkish language, its
position among other languages, its present position, characteristics, its
grammar and rules of writing.

SHO 104 SOCIAL STRUCTURE OF TURKEY (2 0 2)
Social-structural change from the Ottoman Empire to the Turkish
Republic. Developmental characteristics of the social structure of the
Turkish society in the Republican era. Impact of technological
development on social structure. Study of urban, rural and “gecekondu”
communities.

Basic concepts and principles of social anthropology, its scope and
objectives. Definition of culture and theory of culture. Theories of social

Research report writing. Relationship between the research designs
and needs of social work practice (needs assesments, evaluative
research, intervention research etc.). Evaluation of social work research
and utilizing their findings in practice.

Focuses on the interactional process of generalist social work practice.

In this course small groups of students design and conduct a research
project in the field of social services to provide knowledge. Students
groups
start
research
project
identifying
the
problem
through
reviewing literature, design research method preparing research
proposal, collect data according to their proposal, process data, analyse
data using descriptive and inferential statistics when necessary,
interpret findings and write research report. The work is carried on
under the supervision of a faculty member.

and importance of social policy in social work practice. Conceptual and
historical introduction to social policy. The relation between social
policy and industrialization and social change. Historical development
of social state and its contemporary problems. The changes of social

Social and psychological problems in old age terminology. Geriatric

Definition and origins of industrial social work. Roles and skills of social
work in the industrial setting. Social workers’ role in promotion of the
occupational health and safety. Application of social work skills to
human resource management. Job loss and the social work. The role
and function of social workers in trade unions. The future of industrial
social work.
SHO 334 School Social Work (2 0 2)
History of school social work, its conceptual framework, functions of
the school social worker, student focused school social interventions.

SEVENTH SEMESTER
SHO 413 MEDICAL AND PSYCHIATRIC SOCIAL WORK (2 0 2)
The definition of medical and psychiatric social work. History of medical
and psychiatric social work, regulations. Patients and their problems,
psycho-social dimensions of the illnesses, medical and psychiatric social
work in the hospital setting and in the community, social work
interventions to the patients and their families, role and functions of
the medical and psychiatric social worker, patients rights and ethics,
teamwork and medical and psychiatric social worker.
SHO 415 CRIMINALITY AND SOCIAL WORK (2 0 2)
Rights and needs of juvenile delinquents, young offenders and adult
criminals within the context of “Convention on the Rights of Children”
and “Declaration of Human Rights”. Causes of criminality with relation
to macro, mid and micro level social systems. Within generalist social
work approach, intervention to juvenile delinquency, woman and adult
criminality. Characteristics of juvenile justice and criminal justice
systems and their relations to other systems such as welfare,
education, health and social security systems. Models of preventive and
correctional social work with children, youth, woman and adult
criminals.
SHO 417 SOCIAL WORK PRACTICE I (0 18 9)
An integrative approach to the knowledge base of social work, its value
orientation and its practice methodology to work in a supervised
educational setting where the student function as a participant and/or
observer at micro, mezzo, macro level with a references to individual,
family, group, organisation and community.
Preparation of the social work intervention plan by defining the
problem with reference to policies legislation, organisations, groups,
families and individuals. As a preparatory course to Block Field Work, in
an organisational setting in selected problem areas.

SHO-409 Women’s Problems and Social Work (2-0-2)
The course is on the improvement of the conceptual perspective to help
one understand and analyze the common and rooted problems women
face. It also aims at making the students who gain a conceptual
perspective on the issues of women and gender when they start
working as social workers develop a critical outlook to the basic issues
such as family, state, relations of production, sexuality, violence, etc.;
implement the theoretical knowledge they have learnt in social work
interventions; approach the cases with a gender sensitive perspective
they have acquired; and therefore develop rooted and solution oriented
interventions in eliminating the problems of women in social life.
SHO 425 Street Social Work (Detached Work) (2 0 2)
Street as a habitat. Social services provided to homeless, drug abusers
and street children and youth. Global social work intervention polices,
strategies, program ad projects relations polices, strategies with NGO’s
and related organisations.
SHO 427 Substance Abuse and Social Work (2 0 2)
Kinds of substance abuse dynamics related to abuse the pschyco social characteristics of the abusers. The problems faced, social work
intervention in substance abuse. Case studies.
SHO 431 Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO’s) and Social Work (2
0 2)
The role and importance of the non governmental organizations in the
framework of the social development and the social change. The
concept of voluntarism and its importance for social services. Skills and
roles of social workers in the organisation, function and development of
NGO.
EIGHTH SEMESTER
SHO 418 SOCIAL WORK PRACTICE II (0 30 15)
The student enrolled in this course is assigned to an agency five days a
week through the 8 th semester. Student must take on a significant role
to practice micro, mezzo and macro applicants after the planning stage
of the field work II The student is expected to develop ability to
function within the system as a social worker, and to evaluate the
inclusion
of
the
system
on
the
client
systems
sewed.
