Vol XXVIII, No 3 Fall 2009 connections Integrity ~ Teamwork ~ Caring ~ Open-mindedness F.O.R.C.E. Provides Funds for NISH Project Genesis recently received a $2,000 donation from Boone County F.O.R.C.E. (Foundation Offering Recreation & Community Enrichment) to help fund start-up costs for the newest Genesis vocational program – Genesis Custodial Training Services. Their mission to ‘build strong individuals, families, and communities by nurturing the mind, body and spirit’ meshes very well with the Genesis mission to ‘create opportunities, choices and support for people with disabilities.’ The custodial training program provides specific job skills training that will better enable those who complete the program to be successful in community employment. Genesis will assist in placing those who complete the training in independent community jobs or on subcontracted work crews. On August 1, the first custodial crew to complete the training began work on a government contract secured through the NISH AbilityOne Program. NISH, a national nonprofit agency, assists in securing federal contracts and employment opportunities for people with significant disabilities. The Genesis contract provides custodial services at the Military Entrance Processing Services (MEPS) complex at Camp Dodge in Johnston. A Genesis crew cleans over 24,500 sq ft of offices, exam rooms, waiting areas, bathrooms and the cafeteria from 7:00 am to 4:00 pm. Monday thru Friday. Nine individuals from the Boone area took part in the initial training and learned proper cleaning procedures, how to use equipment and products effectively and safely, time management, how to follow directions, respect for property, the importance of teamwork and requesting assistance when needed. The crew members rotate days at the work site under the direction of Mike Larsen, Genesis Work Supervisor. Mike transports the crew from Boone to Camp Dodge and is on-site with them every day as a job coach and trainer and to manage quality control. “The NISH contract has been very successful,” commented Carrie Wilde, Genesis Vocational Director. “The Custodial Training program will provide excellent work opportunities for those who complete the training.” Genesis plans to expand the program to other Genesis sites, secure other government and non-governmental contracts, and provide more opportunities to earn a competitive wage to those desiring community employment. Additional funding is being sought to make this training opportunity possible for many more who desire to participate in the program. New Baler Increases Productivity As part of the vocational program in Boone, Genesis has been operating the Boone County Recycling Center since Good Connections Inc (GCI) closed January 1, 2008, and Genesis took responsibility for the provision of services to those previously served by GCI. The Recycling Center is a component of the Boone County Landfill's operations. The Landfill partners with Genesis to operate the processing facility, drop-off center, and workplace recyclables collection program on the Landfill's behalf. The partnership has been successful in diverting an increasing amount of materials from landfill disposal according to Scott Smith, Boone County Landfill Administrator/Recycling Coordinator. On Wednesday, August 26th a ribbon cutting ceremony was held at the Center to celebrate a new horizontal baler that was purchased with funding assistance from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Representatives from Boone County, the Iowa DNR and Genesis Development were present for the ceremony. “The new baler which replaced a 20 year old baler has significantly increased the operating efficiencies of the recycling center,” commented Smith. “It has also allowed the baling of recyclables that could not be baled previously resulting in Picture by Greg Eckstrom expanded market opportunities.” Purchase of the new baler was funded by the Boone County Landfill (25%) and the Iowa DNR through its Solid Waste Alternatives Program (75%). The baler is the latest in a series of improvements made to the facility by the Boone County Landfill during the past 18 months. Board Members Honored Tim Heisterkamp of Jefferson was presented with a commemorative plaque recognizing his service as President of the Genesis Board for the past year at the final Board meeting of the fiscal year. Steve Raymond of Winterset made the presentation as President-elect for the new fiscal year. Other officers elected at that meeting were Wayne Vader Tuig of Indianola and Gail Rueter of Grand Junction who will retain their positions as Vice President and Secretary respectively and Jim Last of Grand Junction as Treasurer. Plaques were also presented to Ken Putzier of Storm Lake and Ken Curell of Boone as they completed their second 3year terms and left the Board as mandated by Board policy. Putzier and Curell joined the Genesis Board in 2003. Putzier, a retired CPA, has served as Treasurer for the past four years. During their terms on the board, Putzier and Curell have helped guide Genesis through some challenging times as the economy has altered funding streams and strained budgets. They have helped direct Genesis through expansion in many areas. Cedar Lane Estates (CLE) became part of Genesis and three new group homes were opened in Jefferson when county supervisors made the decision to close CLE in 2005. A Genesis office, two group homes and a commercial laundry were opened in Indianola. A group home was opened in Adel. Offices in Vinton, Belle Plaine, Indianola and Boone moved to new locations. Genesis in Jefferson went through a major expansion and building campaign bringing all services and offices to one location there. Storm Lake remodeled their building to accommodate a larger Discovery program, and Jefferson and Boone both added Discovery to their list of services. Jefferson Recycling Services upgraded equipment and entered into a partnership with Mid America Recycling moving that facility from a low volume to high volume recycling service provider. Storm Lake entered into a partnership with Jack Links to provide an on-site work crew for that company in Laurens and purchased a screen printing operation that now produces printed rain gauges for distribution throughout the US and Canada. The corrugated box operation in Jefferson now has customers in every state in the union and beyond. A Genesis Mental Health Services office was opened in Perry and an office was opened in Waukee. Genesis in Boone took over provision of services to former Good Connections Inc clients when that organization closed its doors, which also led to seven more group homes in Boone and a recycling transfer station. Services in eastern Iowa have expanded into Poweshiek County and Tama County with the addition of a residential care facility north of Toledo. In 2003, when Putzier and Curell joined the Board of Directors, Genesis employed 164 people. That number has now risen to almost 325. The staff of Genesis would like to thank both Ken Putzier and Ken Curell for their time, skills and dedication to Genesis and the people we serve. New Board Members New board members replacing Putzier and Curell for fiscal year 2010 are Mary Bilden of Boone and Phillip Nelson of Storm Lake. Mary Bilden is an accountant in Boone. She and her husband, Pete, own a pharmacy in Nevada plus he manages the Boone Hy-Vee pharmacy. Mary serves on the city civil service commission and is an active member of the Boone Rotary and several other Boone organizations. Phillip is the Director of Plant Operations and Security at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center. Before attending Upper Iowa University in Fayette, he received electrical and electronics training in the US Navy. He also attended nuclear power school and advanced submarine electrical power maintenance school while in the Navy as well as serving aboard the attack submarine, USS John Marshall. Phillip and his wife Cheryl, who is the Executive Director of Gingerbread House Child Development Center, have five children ranging in age from 18 months to 20 years and are expecting another in February. “Genesis is a vital advocate for some of the most vulnerable among us,” commented Nelson. “Many men and women rely daily upon its continued success and growth – it is my honor to serve on this board to that end.” Activity at our Sites And the winners are…………. Genesis in Storm Lake captured the The Storm Lake Times Admiral’s Award for the best entry in the Star Spangled Spectacular parade in that city’s July 4th city celebration. The coveted imprinted buoy was accepted by Dorothy, a scarecrow, lion and tin man accompanied by flying monkeys, a couple of witches and the Lollipop Guild. Judges commented on the entry’s attention to detail and that the Wizard of Oz characters were very enthusiastic and all in character in the spirit of the parade theme – “Home Spectacular Home”. Of course, this is also in keeping with the Genesis residential sentiments that “we try to give our people not just a place to live, but a HOME.” Genesis in Jefferson also captured an award for their entry in the Bell Tower Festival parade there. With their float theme of “30 Years of Bell Tower Magic – 35 Years of Genesis Miracles”, a replica of the town’s Mahanay Bell Tower decorated with 30 candles and streamers, and surrounded by an assortment of gift wrapped boxes, they earned the Best Use of the 30th Anniversary Theme award. With sponsorship from Meridian Manufacturing, Genesis in Storm Lake participated in the Relay for Life walk again this year. The sixteen person team, New Beginnings, raised over $100 dollars for the event. They dedicated their efforts this year to Genesis staff member, Brice Jepsen, who was recently diagnosed with cancer. The Genesis team believes in community involvement. By dedicating this walk to Brice and his recovery, they want everyone to know that what you can do is so much more important than what you can’t do. Consumers from the Lamoni area took a day trip to Des Moines in July as a social activity and to do some shopping. Games, luggage and a bedroom make-over were among their purchases. Shopping, ice cream and being with friends made for a fun day away from home. Chris Albright, a Boone consumer, was rewarded for his BBQ expertise at the Boone County Fair when he participated in the Farm Bureau BBQ cookout contest. He prepared both chicken and ribs in the combination category along with six other contestants. Preparation began the night before as Chris marinated his entry and then spent all of the next day at the fairgrounds cooking his special recipes. Lots of friends cheered him on as his hard work paid off with a second place award and a check for $50. In August the Jefferson and Indianola Discovery groups met at Union Park in Des Moines for Wacky Wednesday at the Carousel. After enjoying the park and their sack lunches, they all went for a spin on the Heritage Carousel, one of the few wood carousels built since the 1930's. It’s been crafted in the traditional way with 30 menagerie animals, and a band organ for a traditional sound. It’s also handicap accessible. The two groups also traded names and addresses with plans of developing pen-pal relationships. More Site Activity…………. Jennie Bethards and Team Leader Todd Crase of Winterset made a five hour trip to Monticello for Jennie’s second year at Camp Courageous this summer. Camp Courageous of Iowa provides 40 acres of year-round recreational and respite care activities in a camp setting. The camp provides opportunities for social and personal growth and gives campers an opportunity to try a variety of creative and challenging activities. Jennie was able to go swimming, canoeing, for a carriage ride, to a petting zoo, and experienced a zip line (picture at left), in addition to meeting new and old friends. Cassie Munson of Winterset caught a big ol fish! During a summer fishing excursion she showed her SCL staff how to catch the big ones and then showed her how to take the fish off the hook! Staff Honored for Years of Service Steve Raymond, president of the Board of Directors of Genesis, recently presented a commemorative clock to Terry Johnson, Genesis CEO, in honor of his 30th year of service to the organization. Over the past 30 years, Terry has directed Genesis through several mergers and acquisitions that have taken the organization from a very small agency providing services from rented space at the Greene County Fairgrounds to a multi-site organization that is now providing services to almost 1,200 individuals across the state. When Terry came to Jefferson in 1979, the Greene County Sheltered Workshop and Activity Center had four staff and operated on a budget of $120,000. Since then that budget has increased by almost 10,000% to nearly $12 million and the number of staff has grown to almost 325. Terry holds a degree in Sociology from Luther College. He has been in the rehabilitation field since 1975 and with Genesis Development since July 1979. He has been a consultant to several organizations in Iowa, Indiana and Missouri and has been a presenter at the State Rehabilitation Associations in Iowa and Minnesota. He was a surveyor for CARF, an international accreditation commission for rehabilitation facilities, from 1985 to 2005 and a member of various state, county and regional committees and task forces. He is a past president of the Iowa Association of Community Providers and a member of various professional associations. Terry and his wife Darla, who works for Iowa Hospice, have three grown children and a four-year old grandson. In the little spare time he has, Terry enjoys growing Bonsai trees, golf, and a white MG. Crystal Pepples, Residential Training Staff at the Bradley Home in Jefferson, has also reached a major milestone at Genesis. In August she received a plaque recognizing her for 15 years of service to Genesis in the residential department. Crystal started in 1994 at the Harrison Home and transferred to the Bradley Home five years later. She is also a Medication Manager. “I have learned a lot in my job that carries over to my family – the big one being patience,” commented Crystal. “I really enjoy my job – the consumers kind of consider me a member of their extended family.” Five-Year Milestones Genesis commemorates five-year anniversaries for all staff members. The following have reached a milestone since June. Terry Johnson, Jefferson – 30 years Crystal Pepples, Jefferson – 15 years Sandy Pingel, Storm Lake – 10 years Jackie Belger, Boone – 5 years Mary Rhoades, Boone – 5 years Dorothy Kuehnhold, Storm Lake – 5 years Tricia Wilwerding, Storm Lake – 5 years Chris Miller, Indianola – 5 years Meet Our Staff in Eastern Iowa Brenda Larkin The Genesis offices in Vinton and Belle Plaine have collectively been referred to as the Benton County site since joining Genesis in 2003 when Lutheran Family Services ceased providing services there. The number of staff and consumers at each site was small, but because of the distance between the two sites combining them was not feasible, so offices were created at each location. In the beginning each site had a Team Leader that supervised services provided in their town. With changes in staff, a steady increase in the number of people receiving Genesis services in eastern Iowa, and the recent addition of the residential care facility (RCF) in neighboring Tama County, a greater degree of leadership was warranted in that area. Brenda Larkin of Brooklyn was chosen to take on those responsibilities in the position of Eastern Iowa Site Director. Brenda began her career with Genesis in 2003 as the Team Leader in Belle Plaine. In 2006 she became Team Leader for both the Belle Plaine and Vinton offices. In 2008 she was promoted to Residential Coordinator overseeing Team Leaders in Vinton, Belle Plaine and Poweshiek County. Her duties now include supervision of the Vinton and Belle Plaine offices, the Tama County RCF, and Community Living Services in Poweshiek County. Brenda has also been very involved with Special Olympics taking aspiring athletes to regional and state competitions for many years and winning the Special Olympics Coach of the Year award at the East Central Iowa competition in 2007. She attended the Iowa Association of Community Providers Leadership Training series in 2004. Before coming to Genesis, she worked for Lutheran Family Services for nine years. She and her husband Oliver, a retired Lutheran minister and UNI professor, together have five children and nine grandchildren. Lou Brown On June 1st of this year, the residential care facility (RCF) north of Toledo became part of the Genesis family. Renamed Pheasant Ridge – A Genesis Development Facility, the RCF is now fully staffed. The new administrator for the facility is Lou Brown of Tama. In that position she will be responsible for the oversight and development of all programs, departments and the budget for the RCF. Born and raised in Oklahoma, Lou comes to Genesis with extensive experience working with and counseling people of all ages. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work from the University of Oklahoma and two Master’s degrees in Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling and in Education in Training and Development. She is also a certified Legal Assistant. Her vast employment experience includes various positions in the Oklahoma DHS, supervisor of child welfare workers for Meskwaki Family Services, Promise Jobs counselor for the Iowa Valley Community College district, advanced clinician for Quakerdale Family Services and adjunct professor at Buena Vista University. Lou and her companion, Henry Walker, Jr, came to Iowa in 2006 and have enjoyed participating in RAGBRAI and touring and experiencing Iowa. Lou comes from the Chickasaw Nation and also has family members who are direct descendents of the Ioway Nation. As such, they were invited to participate in the Iowa State Historical Society’s documentary regarding the first descendents of Iowa. Lou’s hobbies include making full-sized rocking horses, bead work, shawl making, and appliqué work. IBM Orders Genesis Boxes IBM found www.customboxesonline.com on the internet and now we’re “making beautiful boxes together!” Early in April, Betty Niles, Marketing Rep for Custom Boxes, received a call from Dan Young at IBM in Colorado, and that was the beginning of another outstanding business relationship. IBM needed several small orders for boxes filled and needed them quickly. That’s exactly where the Genesis box operation excels – short orders with quick turn-around times. The first 10,000 boxes went to Pennsylvania. The style of the next 14,000 box order required that every box be hand-glued. In order to meet the deadline, staff volunteered to come in at 6:00 am and work into the evening to complete the order on schedule – actually ahead of schedule. To date over 40,000 boxes have been sent to various IBM locations and more orders are being processed. By coincidence, Young is also from Iowa, so when he was visiting family in Ankeny in August, he made a trip to Jefferson to tour the Genesis box manufacturing plant. Consumers and staff were impressed with his interest in our facilities and want to thank Dan and IBM for giving Genesis the opportunity to meet their business needs. Let Your IRA Work for Genesis For 2009 there is still a tax break for people over 70 ½ who wish to give to a charity. If you wish to use part of your IRA for a contribution to assist people with disabilities, have your IRA custodian send a contribution directly to Genesis from your IRA. You will not pay tax on your contribution to Genesis. You won’t even need to itemize your deductions – the amount sent to the charity is not treated as income. You may have a “double win” – the reduction in your income may cause less of your social security income to be taxable. Contact your tax consultant for more information The Listening Post …… You asked and we heard you Genesis Development has long prided itself in its ability to respond to the wishes, suggestions and questions of our consumers, their families, case managers, funders and staff. The Listening Post will let you know what issues are being addressed and what changes are being made. Consumer concern: The Discovery group in Storm Lake learned that one of their friends, Brice Jepsen, who has a long association with Genesis, was diagnosed with cancer. The group was determined to help Brice in any way they could. They also learned that there are a lot of expenses associated with his treatment that insurance doesn’t cover, so with the help of Genesis staff and extraordinary support from the community, they organized a fundraiser. Several members of the Discovery group are race car fans and a few Genesis staff have family members that own race cars so the focus of the fundraiser became race cars. Ten racers from the BV Raceway brought their cars to the Genesis parking lot on the afternoon of August 19th where over 170 people from the community came to get autographs, look at the cars and enjoy a pulled pork meal served by Genesis staff and consumers. Members of the Discovery group acted as hosts as people arrived. With the help of supporting funds from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, Discovery was able to present Brice with more than $1,100. The group would like to thank Don Altena for his help with the Thrivent application; the Storm Lake PilotTribune, the Storm Lake Times, Mediacom, and radio stations KAYL and KKIA for advertising; the BV Raceway for their cooperation; and Larson Oil, Lobo's Restaurant and Bar, Truesdale Bar and Grill, Arby's, Fitzpatrick Auto Center, City of Storm Lake, Brown Shoe Fit, Pepsi, Hy-Vee, Wal-Mart, Loew's Carpet One, and Bomgaars for everything from ice to barricades; and the following race car drivers and owners: Brian Blessington, Tony Pogeler, Mike Bailey, Alex Bailey, Justin Nehring, Erick Purhamann, Josh Egesdal, Cory Flanigan, Gary Duitsman, Chris Duitsman, and Mike Duitsman. Consumers asked if they could help ………….……..and they did! EBCE in Third Year EBCE (Experience Based Career Exploration), a collaborative program between Genesis and the Boone High School, is in its third year and has proved to be a valuable transition opportunity for students with disabilities that are nearing graduation. Thirteen junior and senior students spend two class periods four days a week working at various community businesses to gain a better understanding of careers and their own potential. One day a week is spent in the classroom where their teacher works with them on work ethics, career clusters, and other topics directly related to the “real working world.” Kathi Stirling, Genesis Employment Services staff, acts as their mentor and Genesis coordinator. Barb Hardy is the Job Coach for students who require assistance on the job. Thanks to Barb’s coaching last year, two students are able to work independently this year. Many Boone area businesses have been involved in this program providing career exploration opportunities to these students, but we are always looking for more business partners.
