Additional Service Activities within the State and Federal Government
Over the years, I have served on a large number of state and federal government panels for
purposes of providing expert advice on the formulation of national policy and research agenda.
Examples at the federal level include panels sponsored by the National Institute of Health to develop
national research agendas on adolescent unintended pregnancy within the United States and a panel to
establish government funding priorities for research on the dissemination of the Hepatitis B vaccine.
I also served on President Clinton’s White House Task Force to Reduce Adolescent Pregnancy. An
example at the level of state government is my work on developing education programs surrounding
recycling activities in the State of New York (for the New York State Energy and Research
Development Authority). I have also served on numerous site review teams for purposes of
evaluating federal funding of centers (e.g., the RAND Corporation). In addition, I have provided
extensive statistical and methodological consulting to federal and state agencies, including, as
examples, the development of data bases for DNA testing for the New York State Police,
22
measurement design for the National Study of Family Growth Survey (a major periodic health survey
sponsored by the federal government), as well as national surveys on HIV transmission and condom
use. I was a member of the core research team for the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent
Health (Add Health), a $26 million survey on adolescent health sponsored by the federal government
to establish a national data base. This is one of the largest such surveys ever conducted. I have also
given numerous invited addresses to psychological (e.g., American Psychological Association),
governmental (e.g., National Institute of Health, Center for Disease Control, National Academy of
Sciences) and private sector (e.g., Kaiser Family Foundation) organizations.
University Service
During my academic career, I have been active in university service, including participation on such
committees as the Institutional Review Board, the University Auxiliary Service, the College Council,
numerous advisory committees to the Dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Library
Liaison, Departmental Search Committees (not only in psychology, but in departments such as
business, communications, and educational psychology), the Executive Committee within the
Psychology Department at SUNY Albany, Graduate Admissions, Honors Programs, Colloquia
Committees, to name a few. In conjunction with Professor Donn Byrne, I helped to develop the
Center for Applied Psychological Research at SUNY Albany. I also provide substantial statistical
consulting to faculty and students. I have served on over 50 masters and doctoral committees and
have trained numerous pre-doctoral and post-doctoral students. Several of my students have won
national prizes for their dissertations and all have published in the top journals during the time they
worked with me.
