Purpose of the role
This role coordinates the Pregnancy and Parenting Information and Education service that is
delivered by Barnardos across the MidCentral DHB region. The service provides free
information, education and support to pregnant women and expectant fathers/partners,
parents of new babies including adoptive parents and where appropriate, their whanau to
meet their pregnancy and early parenting information, education and social support needs.
The role will support parents to prepare for pregnancy, childbirth and parenthood and make
informed choices, and provide opportunities for them to share their experiences and form
new social networks with other expectant parents.
Context

history. Barnardos has an annual budget in excess of $45m and has provided a broad
range of services for children, young people and their whanau/families throughout Aotearoa/
New Zealand since 1972.

This specific service will be delivered across the catchment area of the MidCentral DHB.
Key relationships with other providers include Childbirth Educators, Wellchild Providers,
Women’s Health Providers, Iwi Health Providers, PHO representatives and Public Health
Nurses.

Key accountabilities
 Develop and coordinate the delivery of the pregnancy and early parenting
information, education and support programme
 Lead a team of facilitators to deliver the programme across the delivery sites
 Develop and maintain the referral process including electronic registration
 Develop and maintain new ways for families to access information and education
components utilising websites, social media applications and other forms of
communication
Programme delivery
The coordinator will be responsible for ensuring that all parents and whanau in the service
receive key messages on core topics through the information or education components of
the service. While these will be determined through the needs of different groups of parents,
they include:
 Pregnancy – access to maternity services; information on lifestyle choices; nutrition and
physical activity through pregnancy; screening, scans and other services; preparing for
parenthood; preparing for labour and birth.
 Labour and Childbirth – stages of labour; coping strategies and considerations; the
childbirth experience
 Early Parenting and Child Health – adjusting in the early postnatal period; new-born
services including screening and Vitamin K prophylaxis; breastfeeding; early child
bonding, development and parenting; new-born enrolment in GP and WCTO services
and early enrolment to other early childhood services; immunisation including the
National Immunisation register
Relationships and whakawhanaungatanga
 Develop and maintain key relationships with maternity and child birth educators across
the MidCentral DHB catchment area, including Lead Maternity Caregivers
 Develop strong collaborative relationships with other maternal and child health providers
including Well child providers, Women’s Health providers, Iwi Health providers, PHO
representatives and Public Health Nurses
 Ensure that all relationships take into account individual differences and cultural and
social contexts and
o are respectful
o validate the parent’s experiences, beliefs and values
o encourage participation in programme
o maintain appropriate professional boundaries
Reporting and information management
 Ensure that quarterly reporting is completed in a timely and accurate way.
 Maintain the client and group programme records in Barnardos client management
system, BConnect
 Be accountable for personal administration including leave forms, timesheets and
statistical recording.
Practice Standards
 Participate in professional development and up-skilling including supervision and team
development
 Ensure that practices are consistent with the Children, Young Person’s and their
Families Act (1989), the Health and Disability Sector standards, the Care of Children Act
2004, Barnardos policies and procedures and other relevant legislation.
 Adhere to the Code of Ethics and associated codes of conduct related to the wider
sector
 Maintain membership of any appropriate professional body

 Have a sound understanding of the principles of Ngā Pou e Whā, the Treaty of Waitangi
and the ability to apply them to everyday practice.
 Ensure that all relationships are built with consideration of the Barnardos values, core

Health and Safety
 All staff have individual responsibility for Health and Safety practices and will:
o Be personally responsible for their own and others health and safety at work
o Promote and participate in health and safety, maintain a safe workplace, and
ensure that any safety equipment is used correctly at the all times
o Be familiar with policy and procedures
o Establish and insist upon safe methods and safe practices at all times.
The key accountabilities of the role may change from time to time so that Barnardos is able
to adapt to changes in the business environment.
Required skills, experience and qualifications
 Facilitation skills that promotes an acceptable environment for different groups of parents
to engage, reflects best practice principles of adult education and inclusive of all parents
including fathers/partners/support person
 Demonstrated skills, knowledge and experience in working with parents in ways that help
them to better understand the changes of pregnancy and early parenting
 Previous experience and understanding of a wide range of societal and familial
structures (e.g. whānau, hapu, iwi, Pasifika)
 Knowledge of the local communities across the MidCentral DHB area and the resources
available to support parents
 Ability to demonstrate reflective practice skills and supervise the work of others
 A relevant tertiary qualification in Childbirth education or related maternal health is
essential
