What’s Happening In The Lesson Orientation: (5 minutes) The anticipatory activity that I will be using is a short conceptual video clip that gives a brief overview of S.E Hinton and The Outsiders. After the quick video, I will ask the students to collaborate with a partner on what the definition of what an “outsider” is and bring the class together to define one specific definition. State the Objective (1min) Students will understand what real life events shaped the foundation of The Outsiders. Presentation of Content: (25 mins) I will begin the lesson by showing a short video clip that will show a quick conceptual video on S.E Hinton and The Outsiders. At the conclusion of this, I will ask the students to collaborate with a neighbor on what the meaning of an Outsider is. At the conclusion, I will use the overhead and What’s Being Said In The Lesson (Earl)“Hello Class. How are we doing today? I’ve been given the privilege today to teach the lesson. Today I will be informing you on S.E Hinton and her personal life as well as how it connects directly to our next novel we will be reading, The Outsiders. Has anyone ever read anything from S.E Hinton or know any fun facts about her?” (ESR) No I don’t know who she is. Earl-“Today you will leave with an understanding of who S.E Hinton is and how her personal life shaped her writing of The Outsiders. I will start off today’s lesson by giving you a short video clip on S.E Hinton followed by a quick PowerPoint presentation on her life. Please jot down notes as I present as their will be a small quiz at the end of the presentation on S.E Hinton and specific facts about her life. Is there any questions?” (ESR) No response. (Begins video/finishes) Earl -“Are their any questions at this point and time before I begin the PowerPoint?”(checking for understanding/knowledge) (ESR) What does S.E. stand for?” (Earl) I’m glad you asked! That’s a great question and will be answered right now.(begins presentation) (Earl) “Hello Class. Today I will be informing you on S.E Hinton and her personal life as well as how it connects directly to our next novel we will be reading, The Outsiders.” (Me) “Hello Class. Today I will be informing you on S.E Hinton and her personal life as well as how it connects directly to our next novel we will be reading, The Outsiders. Has anyone ever read anything from S.E Hinton or know any fun facts about her?” (ESR) No I don’t know who she is. Me- 1 have a quick class discussion on what traits an Outsider has to that we can come up with a complete definition of what it means. This will begin the transition into the PowerPoint about S.E. Hinton and her life. Students will be encouraged to take notes periodically throughout the entire PowerPoint so that they can have a better feeling for the material before the quiz that I will give them at the conclusion of the PowerPoint. The test will allow the students to use their notes on it, but must work independently as this is not intended to be a group activity. Once the quiz has been finished, I will go over the answers of the quiz with the students and help guide them in the right direction for the answers. After the quiz, I will bring the class back together as a whole and explain that they will write down one important thing that they learned from today’s lesson and how it will help them in the upcoming week when actually reading the novel.. “Today you will leave with an understanding of who S.E Hinton is and how her personal life shaped her writing of The Outsiders. (Begins video/finishes) (Checking for understanding/comprehension)“Are their any questions about the video at this point and time before I begin the PowerPoint?” (ESR) What does S.E. stand for?” (Earl) I’m glad you asked! That’s a great question and will be answered right now.(begins presentation) “We will begin with the biographical facts of S.E Hinton.{checking for understanding} Before we begin the slide, can anyone tell me what it a Biography is?(checking for understanding/knowledge) (ESR) A book or paper about someone’s life. Earl Scripting-“That is correct, and now we will begin the slide with the basic facts about S.E Hinton. S.E or known by her full name as Susan Eloise Hinton was born on July 24th, 1948 in Tulsa Oklahoma. Hinton used the abbreviated form of her name to keep her gender confidential and protect her work from sexist reviewers and publishers. As it was uncommon for a woman writer, especially one of such a young age, to be producing mainstream literature. Hinton is 62 today, and still resides in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Hinton attended Tulsa University were she met her husband to be, David Inhofe. They got married that year and had one child, Nicolas, who is known for his contributions as the sound effects 2 recordist of the popular Disney movie Ice Age: The Meltdown.”(Slide transition)” The next slide we will be talking about pertains to S.E Hinton’s personal life. All the information here is directly from Hinton’s website. Hinton is known for her extremely private personality, as she expresses she doesn’t like sharing much of her life with the media. Some of the few facts that she did choose to share are that she loves horseback riding. It is her favorite hobby, as she has shown competitively for both jumping and dressing. She also is an avid reader. She says she reads “constantly” as it helps her to become a better writer. Along with this reading, she takes classes at Tulsa University to further her education, as she says “It’s a lot more fun when you aren’t being tested”. Hinton will be the first to say that that the life of a writer is not the most exciting thing. “A writer's life is not very exciting - usually you're alone in a room with your tools - paper, pen, imagination. (I usually write long-hand first, and then put it on a computer.)”Hinton. Hinton also loves to walk her dog along with riding her horse, which she said often leads her to the grocery store where she wanders in, wondering what she will cook for the upcoming meal. Hinton chose not to comment on her family life as she says she did not want to give up their privacy.”(Checking for understanding) Can someone tell me What S.E stands for and why Hinton used it? (ESR)-it stands for Susan Eloise. She couldn’t use her full name because she didn’t want male readers and reviewers to know she was a woman. Earl scripting-Correct!(slide transition) Earl scripting-“Hinton’s body of work includes not just The Outsiders, but eight other books as well. Hinton’s known most for her work within the genre of young 3 adult fiction, although she has also written Children’s Fiction along with Adult Fiction. Hinton is still actively writing, as she has 9 novels total at the moment.” (slide transition) Earl Scripting-“These are some of the covers of the other books that Hinton wrote.(slide transition) This is the complete listing of all the works that Hinton has compiled during her career. The adult fiction books that she has written are Hawkes Harbor(2004), Some of Tim’s Stories(2006). The young adult books are The Outsiders(1967) That Was Then, This Is Now(1971) Taming The Star Runner(1988). Finally the children books that she has published are Big David, Little David (1995) and The Puppy Sister (1995). (Slide Transition) Earl scripting“The final slide we will discuss today deals with the background to the story we will be covering in the upcoming unit, The Outsiders. The novel revolves around William Rodgers high school where Hinton attended during the 1960’s. The basis of the novel is about two rival gangs called the Socs and Greasers, which caused problems within the community. The main difference between the groups are that the Socs are primarily the popular or “in” crowd that come from money/wealth, while the greasers are the kids who are less popular and don’t necessarily fit in with the “in” crowd. The greasers are often the tough, less wealthy kids who are somewhat of the trouble makers. The unique thing about this novel is that not only was it Hinton’s first work, but she began writing this piece at 15 and published it at the age of 18.The Outsiders has sold more then 14 million copies in print, and continues to sell annually around 500,000 copies per year. (Presentation Ends) Earl-Scripting “At this point in time class I would like you to stop everything that your doing, turn to 4 your neighbor and discuss one important fact from the PowerPoint. I’ll be giving you about a minute to complete this, which will be followed by a test to check your understanding of S.E. Hinton. Notes CAN be used during the quiz but there will be absolutely NO talking allowed Are there any further questions before we begin? (ESR) None. After the time has been allotted, I will go over the quiz with the students. Earl Scripting- “Now we are going to go over the quiz as a Class. Number one. What does S.E. Stand for? Why did she use this? Do you agree or disagree?” (ESR) “Susan Eloise. She used it to hide that she was a girl from the publishers. I agree because of the time period. She couldn’t get published if not.” Earl Script- Correct! I also would agree because even though women technically had equal rights to men during this time period, it was not an even playing field at all. Women were discriminated against because their works were considered inferior to that of their male counterparts. On to number two. Where was Hinton born? (ESR) “Tulsa, Oklahoma”. Earl “Absolutely correct. Moving on to number three personal interest of S.E Hinton. (Esr) “She liked to ride her horse, she liked to walk her dog, and she also likes to read a lot. (Earl)-“That is correct. As most of you can already tell, there is more to becoming a good writer then just writing. Being an avid reader will help you develop an expansive vocabulary that will in turn allow you to write more sophisticated things. Also, you will visually be able to see how the professionals do it so that you can mimic their style and techniques. On to number four, What are the two gangs in The Outsiders? 5 (ESR)-“the socs and the greasers. I would say the person who fits the description most of an outsider would be Arnold from Hey! Arnold because he is really different from all the other kids he is friends with and looks a lot different from everyone else. Earl-“correct and correct. I would like to give another example of an outsider. How many of you have watched the movie Pirates of the Caribbean? The main character of that movie, Johnny Depp, in my opinion would be considered an outsider because of his unique style and non-conventional style of dress. He is unlike any other actor. Moving on to the final question of the quiz, What does the term “Genre” mean? Name one of the books listed from the slide and tell me what the genre is. (ESR) A genre is a category of writing that is defined by specific traits. A book that Hinton wrote was Hawkes Harbor and it was an adult fiction book. Earl-“great!! That was a very good answer for what a genre is. Remember that this will be important later on when reading the book as it will most likely appear again on a test or during an essay. To end the lesson today, can someone please tell me one important thing that you learned today and how it will help you in your reading of The Outsiders in the upcoming week? (ESR)-learning the big differences between the socs and the greasers. By knowing exactly what traits each person has, it can help us understand the book more clearly because it will create a better picture of who the characters are. 6 Checking for Understanding What Does S.E. stand for? (knowledge) Why did she use this? Do you agree? (Knowledge, evaluation) Where was Hinton born? (knowledge) Where did she attend college? (knowledge) Name three personal interest of Hinton What are the two main gangs in The Outsiders? (knowledge) How many books did Hinton writer? Name one Name a T.V character who you’d consider an Outsider and why?(knowledge) What traits make up an Outsider? Categorize them. (synthesis) Guided Practice: ( 15 minutes)The guided practice I will be using with my students will be a group discussion about what is an outsider. I will be standing at the front of the class at the over head, creating a list of characteristics that the students will be coming up with for an outsider, which I will help point them in the right direction so that the definition we create at the end of the discussion will be accurate to that of the book. I also will be using a quiz on the PowerPoint I will be giving. I will hand the quiz out and have the students work independently on it to begin, but will bring the class back together and go through each problem together so that they all get the correct answers. This will be helpful for the future reading as it will give some background to The Outsiders. What is a Genre? Name a genre and a book that you identify with it. (knowledge/application) Analyze the chart we made for what it means to be an outsider. What are the main differences between being an outsider and being apart of the popular crowd? (Analysis) Discussion.- I would like you to turn to a neighbor and discuss for a minute what an outsider is and what character traits define this label. Keep in mind that the must be specific traits. At the conclusion of this minute, we will all compose a list of traits that will help us define what a true “Outsider” is in 2011. (ESR) A nerd. A poor person. A non attractive person. A bad kid. A dirty person. A person who likes to fight…etc. Earl Scripting-“Okay now lets bring this all together. I would say a strong trait of a outsider would be his difference from the majority of the crowd. They “weird” style of dress, the different types of music, the different view on things. The hobbies, the speech, anything that has to do with a different appearance or sound would contribute to the overall difference of being an outsider. In an orderly manner, speak out a trait that you believe constitutes what an “outsider” is. The traits must be appropriate and no names should be given as we don’t judge other students. (Quiz) After the conculsion o the quiz. I will go through each individual answer with the students to further discuss each answer in more depth. Earl Scripting- “Now we are going to go over the quiz as a Class. Number one. What does S.E. Stand for? Why did she use this? Do you agree or 7 disagree?” (ESR) “Susan Eloise. She used it to hide that she was a girl from the publishers. I agree because of the time period. She couldn’t get published if not.” Earl Script- Correct! I also would agree because even though women technically had equal rights to men during this time period, it was not an even playing field at all. Moving on to the final question of the quiz, What does the term “Genre” mean? Name one of the books listed from the slide and tell me 8 what the genre is. Independent Practice: The use of the exit slip will serve as the independent practice. The students will be taking the knowledge that they learned a writing how they will be able to apply it to the upcoming unit. By making the students think critically about the upcoming events, it will force them to go beyond just the reading in the classroom and practice on their own, researching the reading. Closing: 2 minutes To end the lesson, I will bring the class back together and tell the students that they will write down on a scrap piece of paper one important thing they learned from the lesson and how it will help them when reading the novel. This slip will be used as their exit slip. (Me)To end the lesson today, take out a scrap piece of paper and write down one important thing you learned today about S.E Hinton and how it will help you in your reading of The Outsiders. Remember to make sure you explain how it will help, and hand it to me as your leaving as this will be your exit ticket. 9
