Beverly Hills – Perfect place for Entertainment & Shopping Disney Concert Hall Thank you Mike Evans, Doug Highiet, and Fred Kahn for helping to put together this amazing program! Attractions & Adventures The Beverly Wilshire is conveniently located in the heart of Rodeo Drive which is approximately 6 miles from Hollywood and 7 miles from the nearest beach in Santa Monica. It is also conveniently located within 60 minutes from many of the area’s most popular studios, theme parks and attractions. The Concierge will gladly assist you in planning any of the following activities for your upcoming stay. In 1987, the late Lillian Disney made an initial gift of $50 million to build a world-class performance venue as a gift to the people of Los Angeles and a tribute to Walt Disney's devotion to the arts. Since then, other gifts and accumulated interest bring the Disney family's total contribution to over $100 million. The County of Los Angeles agreed to provide the land and significant additional funding to finance Walt Disney Concert Hall's sixlevel subterranean parking garage. Hollywood Walk of Fame In 1988, renowned architect Frank Gehry was selected to design the complex, whose final shape he unveiled in 1991. The County initiated construction of the parking garage in 1992, completing it in 1996. Construction on the Concert Hall itself began in November 1999. Also that year, the Music Center launched a capital campaign to complete the construction funding. Many corporate, foundation, and individual partners, along with the State of California, have contributed generously to the campaign due to the remarkable leadership of Andrea L. Van de Kamp, Chairman of the Music Center, Eli Broad, Chairman of Sun America, Inc., and former Los Angeles Mayor Richard J. Riordan. The Los Angeles Philharmonic provided additional funding for the core project and full funding for the Los Angeles Philharmonic Center. The Hollywood Walk of Fame is a sidewalk along Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA, that serves as an entertainment hall of fame. Designed by Southern Californian artist Oliver Weismuller, who was hired by the city in 1953 to give Hollywood a "face lift", the Hollywood Walk of Fame represented one of a number of improvements the city undertook at the time. It is embedded with more than 2,000 five-pointed stars featuring the names of not only human celebrities but also fictional characters honored by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce for their contributions to the entertainment industry. The Walk of Fame is maintained by the self-financing Hollywood Historic Trust. The first star, awarded on February 9, 1960, went to Joanne Woodward. 3 The Page Museum La Brea Tar Pits present against a backdrop of dramatic architecture, tranquil gardens, and breathtaking views. Rancho La Brea is one of the world’s most famous fossil localities, recognized for having the largest and most diverse assemblage of extinct Ice Age plants and animals in the world. Visitors can learn about Los Angeles as it was between 10,000 and 40,000 years ago, during the last Ice Age, when animals such as saber-toothed cats and mammoths roamed the Los Angeles Basin. Through windows at the Page Museum Laboratory, visitors can watch bones being cleaned and repaired. Outside the Museum, in Hancock Park, life-size replicas of several extinct mammals are featured. The GRAMMY Museum, as shown from the intersection of Olympic Blvd. and Figueroa St. Hours & Admissions: - Monday through Friday, 9:30 am to 5:00 pm - Saturday, Sunday & Holidays, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm - Admission is free on the first Tuesday of each month. (Admisión gratis el primer Martes de cada mes) The GRAMMY Museum was built on December 6, 2008, visitors to Los Angeles can experience the museum’s tribute to the musical process and the culture of music. Located right in the heart of the new L.A. LIVE development, the museum features four floors, each with its own take on the golden thread that music has played in modern history. Thoughtprovoking programs, interactive exhibits and a 200-seat soundstage showcase the past, present and future of music. Visitors will have a chance to immerse themselves in artist profiles, films, timelines, memorabilia and engaging multimedia presentations. In perhaps the most alluring part of the museum, a mock studio takes visitors through the actual recording process, using industry experts such as Dr. Dre to lead visitors through mixing and producing. “Music always has played a vital role in our culture and society, and the GRAMMY Museum will provide visitors a unique and hands-on opportunity to experience music’s rich legacy, as well as the special process that goes into creating it,” said Neil Portnow, President/CEO of The Recording Academy. Please call (323) 934-PAGE for information about special extended holiday hours or closures. The museum even offers music classes for children, as well as lectures with visiting artists and industry insiders. Dubbed a "museum of the 21st century," the GRAMMY Museum hardly resembles a behindthe-glass exhibition. Visitors won’t find any imposing guards asking you to “keep it down.” After all, it’s about music, and “turn it up” is the more likely sentiment. On June 11, 1994, Margie and Robert E. Petersen fulfilled a longtime dream when they became founding benefactors to start the Petersen Automotive Museum, donating $5 million to the Los Angeles County Natural History Museum. In April 2000, the Petersens contributed an additional $24.8 million dollars to the Los Angeles County Natural History Museum to retire the bond debt and establish the Petersen Automotive Museum Foundation as an independent nonprofit organization. Overall, their gifts to the Petersen Automotive Museum total over $30 million. Today, the Petersen Automotive Museum stands as the nation’s premiere automotive museum, serving thousands of visitors each year. Explore our virtual preview of the museum’s highlights, but remember, if music has taught us anything, it's that there’s nothing like the experience itself. Purchase tickets at www.grammymuseum.org. Los Angeles Zoo The Petersen Automotive Museum is dedicated to the exploration and presentation of the automobile and its impact on American life and culture using Los Angeles as the prime example. Encompassing more than 300,000 square feet, its exhibits and lifelike dioramas feature more than 150 rare and classic cars, trucks and motorcycles. The Los Angeles Zoo was founded in 1966. The City of Los Angeles owns the entire zoo, its land and facilities, and the animals. Animal care, grounds maintenance, construction, education, public information, and administrative staff are city employees. Covering four floors, the facility features permanent exhibits on the first floor that trace the history of the automobile. Visitors are invited to walk through, not by, exhibits and dioramas and experience settings of early Los Angeles where the world’s first shopping district was designed. The zoo is open from 10am - 5pm every day of the year except December 25. The zoo, located in Los Angeles' Griffith Park, is home to 1,100 animals from around the world. It has been successful in its breeding program of the rare California Condor, helping to grow the number of condors in the world from a low of 22 in the 1980s to 330 today. The second floor presents five rotating galleries with state-of-the-art displays of racecars, classic cars, vintage motorcycles, concept cars, celebrity and movie cars, and auto design and technology. The May Family Discovery Center is located on the third floor. Designed to spark interest in science by way of the automobile, the 6,500 square-foot, interactive “hands-on” learning center teaches children basic scientific principles by explaining the fundamental functions of a car. Among the highlights of the public zoo grounds are naturalistic habitats for chimpanzees, orangutans, koalas and for the komodo dragon. Major construction is currently underway. A new gorilla exhibit opened in November 2007, and there will be new monkey, elephant and rain forest exhibits in the next several years. A spectacular all-glass penthouse conference center, Founder’s Lounge and kitchen, comprise the fourth floor, which is available for special events and functions. The Petersen Automotive Museum Foundation is 5 The Huntington Library, Art Collections, & Botanical Gardens The Huntington Library is the jewel in Pasadena's crown. The 207-acre hilltop estate was once home to industrialist and railroad magnate Henry E. Huntington (1850-1927), who bought books on the same massive scale on which he acquired businesses. The continually expanding collection includes dozens of Shakespeare's first editions, Benjamin Franklin's handwritten autobiography, a Gutenberg Bible from the 1450s, and the earliest known manuscript of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. Although some rare works are available only to visiting scholars, the library has a regularly changing (and always excellent) exhibit showcasing different items in the collection. If you prefer canvas to parchment, Huntington also put together a terrific 18th-century British and French art collection. The most celebrated paintings are Gainsborough's The Blue Boy and Pinkie, a companion piece by Sir Thomas Lawrence depicting the youthful aunt of Elizabeth Barrett Browning. These and other works are displayed in the stately Italianate mansion on the crest of this hillside estate, so you can also get a glimpse of its splendid furnishings. American art and Renaissance paintings are exhibited in two additional galleries. a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, governed by a Board of Directors. The Museum is located at 6060 Wilshire Boulevard (at Fairfax) in Los Angeles. The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum has informed and inspired more than one million visitors since opening in 1991. Perched on a mountaintop with sweeping views of mountains, valleys, and the Pacific Ocean, this 100-acre site, 45 minutes from downtown Los Angeles, offers memorable experiences for people of all ages. Visitors can follow a young Ronald Reagan on his rise from local hero and college standout to the glamorous world of Hollywood stardom. His campaign trail and inauguration as the 40th President of the United States, the Oval Office, and key events of his two terms are revealed through documents, photographs, and artifacts from eight dynamic years in the White House. These opportunities and many more await visitors at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum, home to a world-class research facility featuring original presidential documents that forever changed our world. The facility is one of twelve presidential libraries directed by the National Archives and Records Administration. More details on all the presidential libraries and the National Archives can be found at www.nara.gov. But it's the vast botanical gardens featuring more than 14,000 different species of plants that draw most locals to the Huntington. The Japanese Garden comes complete with a traditional open-air Japanese house, koi-filled stream, and serene Zen garden. There's also an exotic Desert Garden, intriguing Jungle Garden, and Bing Children's Garden, designed specifically for kids ages 2 to 7. The latest addition is the glass-and-steel Conservatory for Botanical Science where visitors learn some of the fundamentals of botany via state-of-the-art science stations. Museum of Tolerance Museum of Tolerance provides a unique and provocative experience that challenges visitors to become witnesses to history, confront the dynamic of intolerance that is still embedded in society today. Through powerful interactive exhibits, arts and lectures, special events and customized educational programs for youths and adults, the Museum engages visitors' hearts and minds in a journey of discovery to inspire Because the Huntington surprises many with its size and wealth of activities to choose from, firsttimers might want to start with a tour. Other stars they spotted in the same season included Britney Spears, Calista Flockhart, Warren Beatty, Val Kilmer, Danny DeVito, Don Johnson, Rod Stewart and Gregory Peck. In fact, Rodeo Drive is home to the single most expensive store in the world: Bijan (at 420 Rodeo Drive). You must make an appointment in advance just to shop at Bijan (which was named after its Iranian owner). On a typical visit, Bijan's average customer spends in the neighborhood of $100,000 on men's fashions, which range from a $50 pair of socks to $15,000 suits. Yet beyond "Two Rodeo," most of fabled Rodeo Drive is surprisingly humble in appearance. Trees line both sides of the avenue, as well as the center divider (which is always planted with colorful flowers, rotated to match the current season). Most of the small shops do not appear extraordinary - at least not from the outside; inside, though, many of the shops are opulent. The most handsome - and ostentatious - part of Rodeo Drive (and the portion that most resembles what tourists expect to find here) is actually the newest addition to the famed boulevard. If you listen closely to a scene in the movie "Pretty Woman," you will hear a line that says: "Via Rodeo is the first new street built in Beverly Hills in 75 years." The street looks better at night than during the day. This is especially true at Christmas time, when the Yuletide displays in the shop windows take on a particularly lovely glow in the evenings, and twinkle-lights adorn the many trees. During the holiday season, the street's center divider is planted with banks of bright red poinsettia flowers, and the trees all along Rodeo are tied with matching red ribbons. Some of the stores, such as Louis Vuitton, really outdo themselves with delightful Christmas decor. Even the huge Beverly Wilshire Hotel is enveloped in sparkling lights, like some jewel- encrusted bookend at the Drive's southern boundary. Located at the northeast corner of Wilshire & Rodeo, the "Two Rodeo" center creates the illusion of two small, parallel streets, cleverly designed so that they both appear to be at ground level. Built at a cost of over $200 million, Two Rodeo attempts to re-create a romantic version of an old European avenue. In practice, though, this gleaming new addition most resembles a movie set, or perhaps a Disneyland pastiche such as New Orleans Square. The Grove Shopping Center The Grove in Los Angeles is a boutique outdoor shopping mall located across the street from the famous Los Angeles Farmer's Market. As you enter the shopping mall, you can get an overview by hopping on a unique, double decker tram ride that moves on a track back and forth through the shopping center. This ride (which is free) is a fun way to see what's in store for your day of shopping and dining. Built on an historic undercarriage from a 1950’s Boston street car, it travels the ¼ mile track between The Grove and The Farmers Market in 6 minutes. Red oak running boards, custom-cast brass handrails and fittings, and two spiral staircases that lead to the upper deck offer spectacular views of architectural styles encompassed in the the shopping mall. The Grove Trolley is powered by electric battery cells, making it the first use of inductive power technology in the U.S. for a transit system. But it's still a winner in its own right. The short, curving street is paved with Old World cobblestones, and features two & three story facades, with a unique blend of classic architectural styles. There are romantic archways, bubbling fountains, an Italianate piazza, and charming balconies. The faux street is lined with black, wrought-iron street lamps and polished brass fixtures; ornate planters are filled with colorful flowers & trees. Essentially a small outdoor mall, "Two Rodeo" manages to create the illusion of freestanding storefronts, variously faced with brick, stone and marble. There is a sidewalk café, two pricey restaurants, and tenants such as Tiffany, Cartier, Charles Jourdan, Valentino, Christian Dior, and Jose Eber. The center even offers free, two-hour valet parking in its posh underground garage. 11 A dancing fountain similar to the much larger fountain that graces the entrance to Bellagio on the Las Vegas (Nevada) Strip was built by the same engineering firm, WET Design. Every 30 minutes the fountain comes alive with songs and a water show in which the water dances in rhythmic patterns to the tunes of Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Russell Watson, Bette Midler, Lou Rawls, Harry Connick Jr., Kool and the Gang, Lionel Richie and other top performing artists. A 30-foot-long ellipse of 32 pulsing water jets and an inner ring with eight arching and swaying columns of water join together to create a water dance that reaches heights of 60 feet. unique designs and products for today's demands and budget. Melrose Avenue You know what you’ll find in Beverly Hills: Dior, Chanel, Gucci, Prada. In contrast, Melrose and Beverly Boulevards, parallel shopping streets, offer some surprises with less-established, cutting-edge designers. More surprises await when you glance at price tags only a smidge less lofty than their Rodeo Drive counterparts. Apparently, it costs money to look glam. Costume Nationale and Miu Miu make their homes in this mid-town neighborhood. The ne plus ultra of mini-malls, Fred Segal, anchors the MelroseBeverly district, luring hordes of A-listers and wannabes with the newest Chloe tees, Dolce & Gabbana leather and Kiehl creams. Not a day goes by without a name-brand face strolling into Fred Segal. Another feature of the shopping mall attraction is The Spirit of Los Angeles, a commissioned work by sculptor De L’Esprie. The statue stands 18 feet high atop a 22 foot hand limestone column and includes a bronze statue of a male and a female angel soaring skyward. When the stars themselves are too busy or just can’t be bothered to leave Malibu, they send stylists and costume designers to shop for them. Costume designers for Friends, Sex in the City and the O.C. have been known to shop here. Driving by, you wouldn’t necessarily recognize these streets as the hotbed of American trendsetting. Unlike Beverly Hills, Madison Avenue or your run-of-the-mill mall, Beverly and Melrose have sparse, if any landscaping, bland, box-like storefronts and deserted sidewalks. Although theoretically, you could walk from store to store, not many do, preferring to drive the 20 or so feet from Miu Miu to Jonathan Adler. Once inside these boutiques, however, you’re rewarded with some of the most innovative designs available anywhere. Which goes to show, even in LA, it’s what’s inside that counts. Do you have a craving for chocolate? Stop by Bodega Chocolates for a special treat. Ice cream doesn't come any better than Haagen-Dazs, located in the mall. Want an apple? Drop by the Apple Store where you can purchase state-of-the art mind food products from the computer manufacturer artists swear by for easy-to-use, intuitive software and cool designs. Barnes & Noble also provides some great magazines, books and software. From spa and personal care to fashions galore, The Grove will get you in the L.A. groove, looking oh-so cool! Among the boutiques is a list of names you'll recognize for their fashion lines appealing to a large audience. Abercrombie & Fitch, American Girl Place, Anthropologie, Arden B., Banana Republic, Gap, BabyGap, GapKids, GapBody, Janie and Jack Children's Apparel & Toys and Lucky Brand Dungarees are all represented at The Grove. Contemporary and beach-themed attire fills your desire at Pacific Sunwear, Quiksilver Boardriders Club, Quiksilver Youth and Tommy Bahama. Ladies and gents might want to check out Theodore, Chico's, Coach Handbags & Accessories, Forever 21, J. Crew, M. Fredric, Marciano, Michael Stars, nikewomen and Nordstrom - Department Store. Specialty products can be purchased as the many great shops at The Grove. Home Furnishings stores include Crate & Barrel, Lucy Zahran & Co and Pottery Barn Kids Home Furnishings & Toys. Jewelry and personal care products are available in an assortment of shops from Victoria's Secret to Amadeus Aveda Spa. In addition you can buy watches, cosmetics and jewelry. ICE Accessories, L'Occitane, Optical Fashion Center, Palm, Paragon Watch Company, Siany and Tracy Allen Fine Jewelry all offer Robertson Blvd. For those who are looking for a taste of Beverly Hills shopping, but actually have limits on their credit cards, Robertson Boulevard Shopping District is worth checking out with a variety of stores, like Agnes B., Curve and Ghost found here you will not be disappointed. At Robertson Boulevard Shopping District you can eat, drink and shop like the stars on L.A.'s celebrityfrequented street. There are chic shops and fancy eating places. Some shops are a little easy on the wallet while others are not so. Sunset Plaza/Sunset Strip Sunset Boulevard runs from downtown Los Angeles to Malibu, but the "Sunset Strip," a 1.5mile-long section between Doheny Drive and N. Crescent Heights Blvd. is its most famous section. An unincorporated part of Los Angeles County until 1985, Sunset Strip got its name from county 12 workers who called it "that strip," or "the strip up Sunset." The first buildings went up at the corner of Sunset Strip and Sunset Plaza Drive in 1924. Under less strict laws than the adjoining city, Sunset Strip soon became a center for nightlife and gained the reputation it still enjoys today. Even though the movie theater was located in Los Angeles, the opening was newsworthy enough to warrant a full article in the New York Times. The theater was subsequently sold to a different movie theater chain and reduced to a 13-screen theater. The mall contained the USA's first Hard Rock Cafe, being the third one after the London original and the initial North American one in Toronto. The Beverly Center was originally anchored by Bullock's and The Broadway department stores, in 1993 Bullock's opened a separate Bullock's Men's store, before both stores were renamed Macy's in 1996. The Broadway closed its location in 1996 when it was absorbed into Macy's and its former store was reopened by as a Bloomingdale's in 1997. In 2004, Taubman Centers, the public Real Estate Investment Trust and successor to A. Alfred Taubman's shopping center interests, purchased its partners minority investments stake in the property. Anchor tenants include Macy's, Bloomingdale's, and a 13-screen movie theater (originally a 14-screen multiplex). While the mall features staples of American retail—such as Banana Republic, Victoria's Secret and Forever 21—it is also home to several high-end designer boutiques, including Armani Exchange, Just Cavalli, D&G Dolce & Gabbana, Louis Vuitton, Calvin Klein, Ben Sherman, Diesel, Gucci, Dior, and Hugo Boss. The mall's Rooftop Terrace offers sweeping views of the Hollywood Hills, Downtown Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Westside. Westfield Century City The mall originally opened up in 1964 and is one of the older shopping malls in L.A. At that time, The Broadway was its only anchor. An expansion in 1976 brought in a second anchor, Bullock's, as well as more shops. These buildings, having brown brick exteriors, were built on top of a formerly open air parking lot. The mall's next major renovation came in 1987 when the old tent like structure at the northwest corner of the mall was taken down and in its place came a food court built in the form of an updated urban market and appropriately named the Marketplace. That renovation also brought in a 14-screen AMC movie theater that, in the era before multiplexes came of age, was one of the largest movie theater complexes in the U.S. Both the Marketplace and movie theaters immediately became hits. In 1996 both The Broadway and Bullock's closed when The Broadway's struggling parent Carter Hawley Hale was acquired by Federated Department Stores. Federated then converted the store into Bloomingdale's while retiring the Bullock's name in the process in favor of Macy's. The Westfield Group acquired the shopping center in 2002, and renamed it "Westfield Shoppingtown Century City", dropping the "Shoppingtown" name in June 2005. In 2004, Westfield initiated a $127 million renovation which has largely been completed as of mid2007. The old Marketplace and movie theaters have been converted to new retail shops catering to the more upscale, trendy customer. The Center's externally-visible escalators previously resembled similar escalators at the Pompidou Center in Paris, France; however, the escalators underwent renovation in 2007 and now have a significantly different appearance. The Beverly Center was originally opened in 1982 by developers A. Alfred Taubman, Sheldon Gordon & E. Phillip Lyon. (The site's former occupant was a small amusement park featuring a ferris wheel and pony rides known as Kiddyland.) The opening of the mall featured the debut of the Cineplex movie theater - a multiplex movie theater initially boasting 14 screens, at that time the largest number of movie screens in any US multiplex. The multiplex was launched on July 16, 1982, with the West Coast premiere of Miramax's 13 Westfield Century City Shopping Centre 10250 Santa Monica Blvd. stores as Gucci, Valentino, Versace, Georgio Armani, Saks Fifth Avenue, Christian Dior, Ralph Lauren, Chanel, Tiffany, Hugo Boss, Hermès, Louis Vuitton, Harry Winston, Bvlgari, Burberry, Fendi, Yves Saint Laurent, Van Cleef & Arpels, Jimmy Choo, Montblanc, Bottega Veneta, Donna Karan New York, Sergio Rossi, Celine and Cartier. There's even a Wolfgang Puck Cafe. Los Angeles CA 90067 (310) 277-3898 South Coast Plaza If Rodeo Drive has a rival anywhere in Southern California, it is South Coast Plaza. This giant mall is located 40 miles away from Hollywood and Vine, but it would be unconscionable to talk about opulent shopping malls and not mention this Orange County mega-center - the number one retail center in the United States.
