SUMMIT HIGH SCHOOL
IB MATHEMATICS SL– Year 1
COURSE DESCRIPTION: This is a 2 year long diploma programme course created to prepare students for
the Mathematics SL Exam and/or the AP Calculus AB Exam at the end of the second year of the course. The
majority of students in this course will go on to study subjects that are rich in mathematical content. Therefore, this
course is a demanding course where students are expected to already possess a large amount of mathematical
knowledge and ability when entering it. Students will go on to apply important mathematical processes and study a
broad range of topics. Many topics are included because they are required for further mathematical study. Students
will solve problems in context and will study certain topics independently in completing the internal assessment,
portfolio projects. The course will help students develop their thinking skills and appreciation of mathematics.

MAKE-UP WORK: Work is expected to be done on time and turned in on the due date.
Students who are unexpectedly absent (and excused) will have 1 day per class missed to make up
work. (Any work due on the day you were absent will be due on the day you return.) Students
with pre-arranged or school related absences should make every effort to be caught up
upon their return. No make-up homework will be accepted after you take the exam! You
should be prepared to make up an exam missed due to an excused absence when you return to
school. If you miss only the review day for an exam, you will be expected to take the exam on
time! Make-up work not due to an absence will be accepted until the beginning of the period on
the day of the test for half credit.
ATTENDANCE POLICIES: Being in class consistently and on time is important. As a
consequence of truancies or tardies, you will not receive any credit for assignments due that
day, missed quizzes, or missed tests. Please be aware that one missed test could cause you to fail
for the semester!
EXTRA CREDIT: Extra credit is not available in this class upon request!
CHEATING: Due to the serious nature of cheating, anyone caught either cheating or helping
someone else cheat will receive a zero for that quiz, project, or test! No talking is allowed during
a test or quiz until the last test is turned in.
BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS:
This class will be run according to the 6 P’s: Prompt, prepared, participate, produce, polite,
and positive mental attitude. In addition, students will be expected to practice good attending
skills.
