FORSYTH COUNTY COURSE SYLLABUS 2010-2011 COURSE TITLE: International Baccalaureate Mathematical Studies (Standard Level) TEACHER NAME: Ms. Carrie Paulson ROOM: West Hall Room 473 E-MAIL: capaulson@forsyth.k12.ga.us PHONE: 770.781.2264 EXT: 100473 Course Description: Math Studies caters to students with varied background and abilities, and encourages math exploration and expertise. Compulsory topics include Number and Algebra, Sets and Logic, Geometry and Trigonometry, Statistics and Probability, Functions, Financial Mathematics and Introductory Differential Calculus. Some standards for examination were covered in the prerequisite course sequence. Students will have time during the semester to review this material, but these standards will not be re-taught. Standards: Course standards are available at http://occ.ibo.org/ibis/documents/dp/gr5/mathematical_studies_sl/d_5_matsd_gui_0605_1_e.pdf IB Assessments: Both Internal and External Assessments External assessment comprises 80% of the IB Math Studies score. It is a two-part examination: “Paper One” comprises 40% of the examination total and consists of fifteen compulsory short-response questions based on the compulsory core of the course content. “Paper Two” comprises 40% of the examination total, and consists of an extended-response question from the Introductory Differential Calculus content. The Internal assessment involves the collection and/or generation of data, and the analysis and evaluation of that data. These projects may take the form of mathematical modeling, investigations, applications, and statistical surveys. The internal assessment project comprises 20% of the examination total. The project is internally assessed by the teacher and externally moderated by the International Baccalaureate Organization. Students must complete the project in order to receive the IB Diploma. Required Assignments: Internal Assessment: 20% of IB Math Studies score All due dates are absolute due dates for the Internal Assessment (IA). The schedule of these due dates will be given to students and posted when the IA is introduced in class. A student is not eligible for an IB Diploma if the internal assessment is not submitted for each IB course. The IA will counts as a summative grade in the student’s Math Studies course average. External Assessments: combined 80% of IB Math Studies score Paper One: May 4, 2011 PM (40%) Paper Two: May 5, 2011 AM (40%) Any student not sitting for the IB External Assessments in May will be required to take summative assessments in class on both May 4th and May 5th. These summative assessments will match the IB format and will count towards the student’s course grade. Learning Resources/Textbook(s): Students will be issued Math Studies: Standard Level 3rd Edition, IBID Press ($58.16). Students will also have access to this text online through our Learning Management System (Angel). We will also be using the Advanced Algebra and Trigonometry book as an in class resource. ANGEL Learning Management System: http://angellearning.forsyth.k12.ga.us As a part of this course, students will be required to use ANGEL, an online learning management system. In order to use this tool, students will need reliable access to the internet. Daily assignments, online assignments, pacing calendars, and other resources will be uploaded. It is the student’s responsibility to check ANGEL on a regular basis. To login to ANGEL, students use the same user id and password that they use to log into a school computer. Individual Practice: Individual Practice is extremely important to the success of the student in this class because it reinforces the daily lesson and prepares the student for upcoming material. Individual practice is assigned daily. On the day following an assignment you will have an opportunity to ask questions regarding the assignment. Assignments will be checked for accuracy and this will comprise part of your formative grade. It is your responsibility to have your individual practice with you each day and make any needed corrections when the assignment is reviewed. Forsyth County Final Exam Exemption Policy: Students who have a course average of at least 90% will be exempt from taking the final exam with a signed parent approval form. Students are still required to take any End of Course tests for the courses that have them and are required to take the Georgia High School Graduation Tests during junior year. Availability for Extra Help: I have two regularly scheduled help sessions each week: Mondays beginning PROMPTLY at 7:45 am, and Wednesdays from 3:45 until 4:30. If you are having difficulty understanding material, please do not wait until just before a test to come in for assistance. Do so immediately. I am available on other days; however, I ask that you check with me prior to coming in, so I can verify that I do not have a previously scheduled meeting. Your time is valuable and I do not want you to waste it by waiting for me when I have a previously scheduled meeting to attend. In addition, you may come in for help during our weekly IF sessions. You must ask the teacher for a pass BEFORE Wednesday to be able to come in for help. Because arrangements must be made to ensure there are enough seats for students during IF we will not be able to accommodate requests for IF passes on Wednesday mornings. Makeup Work: All missed work and assessments are the responsibility of the student when they are absent from school. A student who is absent on the class day before a regularly scheduled assessment will be responsible for completing the assignment on the regularly scheduled day and time. Students who have been absent more than two consecutive days (including the assessment day) will be given five (5) school days to make up the assessment and/or other assignments. This does not include major projects, research papers, etc., where the deadline has been posted in advance. The teacher has the discretion to grant a longer period of time to make up work if there are extenuating circumstances. Late Work: Late work that is graded for accuracy will be accepted for reduced credit. Deadlines for late work will be set in class during the semester in which the assignment was originally given. Grading Calculations: Course Average = 42.5% Sem. 1 Course Work + 42.5% Sem. 2 Course Work + 15% Final Exam 1ST & 2ND Semester Course Work = 60% Summative + 40% Formative Grading Policy: A = 90 – 100 B = 80 – 89 C = 70 – 79 Failing = Below 70 *Formative Assessments include, but are not limited to homework, class work, practice tests, rough drafts, and sections of projects/ research papers/presentations. *Summative Assessments include, but are not limited to unit tests, final projects, final essays, final research papers, and final presentations. Required Supplies: Three ring notebook & Loose-leaf paper (NO Spiral Notebooks) IB Graph Paper (students can print this from Angel) Pencils and Pens Scientific Calculator (TI-30 XIIB or TI-30XS Multiview) Graphing Calculator (TI 84 or TI-Nspire) My expectations are high, but together we can achieve our goals.
