Nurses Discuss Long-Term Care at Networking Breakfast Nursing professionals from long-term and community-based care organizations discussed “The Changing Culture of Long Term Care” on June 21 in Portland, Ore., and The second breakfast, “Education Trends in Long Term Care,” was held Aug. 26. Martin Luther King Jr. Hospital to Reopen in 2013 . The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors recently approved an agreement with the University of California to reopen Martin Luther King Jr. Hospital in South Los Angeles. Discharge Calls Give RNs Feedback on Patients’ Experiences Rita Marks, RN, BSN, made more than 4,073 calls this year to patients discharged from the ICU and acute -care units of Swedish/Edmonds Hospital to gather feedback on their experiences and pinpoint areas for improvement. A triage discharge nurse in Washington’s Snohomish County, Marks makes daily rounds of the ICU, PCU, mother-baby and acute-care units to meet patients being discharged and let them know she will be calling with questions about their stay at the facility, which changed its name from Stevens Hospital to Swedish/Edmonds Sept. 1 after a merger with Seattle-based Swedish. Mercy Medical Center Opens New Outpatient Chemo Unit Mercy Medical Center Redding (Calif.) recently opened an outpatient chemotherapy unit inside Mercy Regional Cancer Center. CEO Lauds Facility for 49 Years of Service to Community On July 17, 1969, Chandler (Ariz.) Regional Medical Center opened its doors as Chandler Community Hospital with 25 employees and 91 volunteers. Nearly half a century later, the medical center has grown exponentially in size and scope. The ribbon-cutting ceremony, on the campus of University Medical Center, was attended by community members, donors, heathcare staff, state and local officials, and board members. Nurses Use Simulation to Identify, Treat Early Signs of Sepsis This summer, nearly 150 nurses from Oakland, Calif.-based Alta Bates Summit Medical Center used simulation training at Samuel Merritt University to raise the level of education and experience in early identification of sepsis. Brandman University Receives Accreditation for DNP Degree Brandman University, a nonprofit, fully accredited adult university in Irvine, Calif., within the Chapman University System, recently received accreditation for its Doctor of Nursing Practice program from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
