Benefits of Working at Rutgers We hope you will take advantage of the full range of benefits available to Rutgers employees. Once you are in the Rutgers database (i.e.: once you have received your first paycheck or when your name appears in the online directory available at http://search.rutgers.edu/), you will be able to get the RUconnection Card, which is the key that unlocks many doors at the University. Simply visit the RUconnection Card office in the Busch Campus Center between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and the friendly staff will assist you. For more information, visit http://www.rci.rutgers.edu/~ruconxn/. Once you have your card, you can take advantage of the following “perks”: Recreational Services Recreational Facilities are available on all Rutgers University campuses and are open to all faculty and staff with valid RUconnection Cards (see above). There you can access free or low cost recreational activities of all kinds, including swimming, exercise classes, weightlifting, dance, basketball, tennis, SCUBA, martial arts, and many more. Some noncredit recreation classes are open to family and friends. For more information about the services available on your campus, consult the links below: College Avenue and Busch: http://recreation.rutgers.edu/ Cook / Douglass: http://www.cook.rutgers.edu/~rec/ Livingston: http://www.livingston.rutgers.edu/students/welcome.html Non-credit classes: http://recreation.rutgers.edu/classes/index.html Library The Rutgers University Library system is one of the largest open-stack libraries in the United States. All faculty and staff with a valid RUconnection Card (see above) or other valid proof of employment can set up a library account at the Circulation Desk of any campus library. Use the fast and convenient interlibrary loan system for borrowing materials from other libraries. And access materials from home (for information on how to do so, see http://www.libraries.rutgers.edu/rul/how_do_i/connect_from_home.shtml.) For more information about the libraries, including the online catalog (called IRIS), visit http://www.libraries.rutgers.edu/. Computing All Rutgers instructors and students have free access to Rutgers University Computing Services machines while on campus. To use the computers at Rutgers you need to create a RUCS Account and establish a NetID. Once you are in the Rutgers database, simply visit http://rucs.rutgers.edu/services/account/quick.html to set up your account. Visit the home page of the New Brunswick Computing Services at http://nbcs.rutgers.edu/ for everything you need to know about accessing computers on your campus. If you have problems or questions, call the RUCS Help Desk at 732-445-HELP for assistance. Internet Access One of the greatest benefits of working at Rutgers is having free access to the internet. Most instructors have internet access in their offices. All instructors have access to the internet through any Library for free or any RUCS location once they have an account (see above). And, for those who find it useful, the University provides free dialup access to the internet. Dialup access could be a real benefit if you haven’t already switched to cable or DSL and if you live within local calling distance to any of the Rutgers campuses in Newark, Camden, or New Brunswick. Visit http://nbcs.rutgers.edu/services/connected/#dialup for details. Technology Training The Writing Program encourages all instructors to learn more about technology, and we will be offering a series of workshops on using the technologies available in our computer classroom. We also encourage all instructors to increase their knowledge of technology by taking free workshops here at Rutgers. The Teaching Excellence Center offers classes on Access, Advanced Word, Dreamweaver, Web Graphics, and Teaching with Technology. For more information, visit: http://teachx.rutgers.edu/workshops/. The New Brunswick Computing Services offers a free educational series covering topics from using your email more effectively to doing basic computer programming. See their website at http://edseries.rutgers.edu/ for more details. Museums There are two local museums worth a visit, both free to Rutgers employees: The Zimmerli Art Museum is located at the corner of Hamilton and George Streets (right next door to Murray Hall) and offers a café and gift shop. Visit their website at http://www.zimmerlimuseum.rutgers.edu/. The Geology Museum is located in Geology Hall in the Old Queens area between Murray Hall and the train station. Visit their website for hours: http://geology.rutgers.edu/museum.html.
