St. Martin High School Standard Course Syllabus Family and Individual Health Robin Pate Course Textbook: Prentice Hall Health Course Goal: Family and Individual Health is a course which develops skills related to personal, social, and mental health in today’s society. It includes instruction on human growth and development, disease prevention and control, substance abuse and prevention, nutrition, community and environmental health, and safety and first aid. This course can be taken in lieu of Comprehensive Health. Competencies: Describe ways to achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Explain the relationship between current health decisions and future wellness. Recognize the benefits of being a wise consumer. Explain how mental health contributes to personality. Describe how stress influences mental health. Summarize how genetic traits are passed on from one generation to another. Examine health practices to be considered before, during, and after pregnancy. Recognize the causes, transfer, and control of common communicable diseases. Recognize the ways to prevent HIV infection and STDs. State causes, signs, and control of noninfectious diseases.
