Family and Individual Health

Course Textbook: Prentice Hall Health
Course Goal: Family and Individual Health is a course which develops skills related to personal,
social, and mental health in today’s society. It includes instruction on human growth and
development, disease prevention and control, substance abuse and prevention, nutrition,
community and environmental health, and safety and first aid. This course can be taken in lieu
of Comprehensive Health.
Competencies:
Describe ways to achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Explain the relationship between current health decisions and future wellness.
Recognize the benefits of being a wise consumer.
Explain how mental health contributes to personality.
Describe how stress influences mental health.
Summarize how genetic traits are passed on from one generation to another.
Examine health practices to be considered before, during, and after pregnancy.
Recognize the causes, transfer, and control of common communicable diseases.
Recognize the ways to prevent HIV infection and STDs.
State causes, signs, and control of noninfectious diseases.
Make responsible food choices.
Discover the importance of fitness.
Analyze the health hazards of tobacco.
Analyze the health hazards of alcohol.
Analyze the health hazards of drugs.
Analyze the health hazards of inhalants.
Discuss refusal and intervention skill.
Identify community health care agencies and their functions.
Explain how environment affects people and how people affect the environment.
Discuss promotion of safety and prevention of accidents.
Discuss and demonstrate procedures for emergency situations.
