ACTIVITIES/ASSESSMENTS
Objective: Students will be able to:
 Analyze the symbol of the eyes of T.J. Eckleburg.
 Judge Tom and Gatsby’s treatment of class in the chapter.
 Paraphrase Jay Gatsby’s love affair with Daisy, filling in the gaps with
their suppositions.
 Identify examples of foreshadowing in chapter 8 and explain their
contribution to the mood of the chapter.
 Evaluate Nick’s summation of Gatsby in his parting words to him.
Activities:
 1) Quack! Unit 9 review.

2) Chapter 8 Reading Check Quiz – theme paragraph.

3) Foreshadowing: What clues tell us early in the chapter that this is the
end of Gatsby? There is a doomed feeling throughout.
Question: How did George Wilson find out about Gatsby?


4) This was the night Gatsby told Nick the story of Dan Cody.
But Gatsby really wanted to talk about Daisy. With a partner:
Reread closely Jay Gatsby’s story about Daisy (p.148-151). Put this in
your own words (bullet points) and try to clear up any points that seem
vague in the narration.


4.5) Share responses. Add to The Real Jay Gatsby list.
Class – Jay Gatsby let Daisy believe he was of her own class. Debate:
Was this wrong of him? How are Gatsby and Tom’s views on class
relevant to America today?

5) Read aloud p. 152 – Gatsby still believes Daisy loves him. He visited
Louisville after the war even though Daisy was still on honeymoon, and
walked around the old places still imbued for him with her light.
Anecdote: Kobe. Student stories?


6) Nick and Jordan – p. 155. What is Jordan concerned with? How does
she think Nick has treated her? But what was Nick more concerned with
last night? Nick is the only one who sees the whole real picture – a
woman was killed last night. (Already talked about this in Chapter 7 with
B day.)

7) Symbol – TJ Eckleburg – God.

8) Facebook statuses in groups.

9) Conclusion: Nick’s parting words to Gatsby: “They’re a rotten
crowd…You’re worth the whole damn bunch put together.”
Respond to this quote, giving your own opinion and supporting it with
adequate details from the book.



