Natural Hazards Center Seeks Post-Doctoral Researcher
The Natural Hazards Center is seeking to hire a professional
research assistant/post- doctoral scholar to assist with the
coordination of its research program. This soft-money appointment
extends for one year with the possibility of extension to twothree years.
The purpose of the position is to collaborate with the Natural
Hazards Center director, program manager, research coordinator,
and other staff on Center projects funded by NSF, the Department
of Homeland Security, and others. The position will play a lead
role in a newly funded Center project on preparedness among
community-based and faith-based organizations and other nonprofits providing services to at-risk populations in the San
Francisco Bay Area.
Minimum Requirements:
Education: PhD in a social/behavioral science discipline or
closely related field (e.g., public health).

Skills & Knowledge: Comprehensive knowledge of both qualitative
and quantitative research methods, procedures, and techniques;
experience coordinating fieldwork teams; advanced knowledge of
qualitative data analysis techniques; excellent oral and written
communication skills, accompanied by the ability to communicate
with diverse audiences both inside and outside academia; excellent
interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with others;
and the ability to design, plan, implement, troubleshoot, and
administer all phases of the research work. Must be willing to
travel.
Experience: Two or more years of experience in fieldwork related
to hazards and disasters.

A postdoctoral fellow *position* is available in the laboratory of
Katharina Dittmar De La Cruz at the Department of Biological
Sciences, SUNY Buffalo, NY
(http://www.wyomingbioinformatics.org/~kdittmar/). The *post**doc* should have a keen INTEREST IN EVOLUTIONARY BIOLOGY, and
some experience in molecular biology (e.g., in situ hybridization,
RT-PCR, protein expression).
Previous exposure to phylogenetics and/or genomics is
advantageous. The candidate will work on protein coding sequences
that appear to be undergoing adaptive evolution/ changes of
function in specific parasitic groups (e.g.
Siphonaptera, Streblidae, Nycteribiidae) and study them from a
computational and experimental perspective (see my website for
details).
The *post*-*doc* IS ABSOLUTELY ENCOURAGED to pursue own ideas and
projects.
Available Lab Resources include:
1. A PCR wet lab combined with molecular biology facilities.

Additional Facilities that are available include:
1. The CCR (Center for Computational Research); 2. A computer
visualization lab; 3. The LMVA (Laboratory for Molecular

The desired starting date is November 1, 2007. The *position* is
for two years with possible extension. Salary will start at
$36.000 - $38.000 plus benefits, depending on experience.
Participation in international field work (e.g., India, Europe,

Project Description:
The Organic and Biological Mass Spectrometry (OBMS) Group in the
Chemical Sciences Division (CSD) at the Oak Ridge National
Laboratory (ORNL) currently has an immediate opening for a
research scientist with particularly strong skills in tissue
imaging and high throughput analysis.
The research will involve the use and development of novel surface
sampling and ionization methods coupled with mass spectrometry.
Extensive knowledge of atmospheric pressure ionization sources and
metabolism studies would be beneficial. The successful candidate
will be able to work well within a team of experienced scientists.
The successful candidate will be expected to participate

creatively in program development and proposal writing for
existing and new sponsors and to initiate new research directions.

5. Fellow - Environmental Risk Management East-West Center Fellow
- Environmental Risk Management Research Program
Established by the United States Congress in 1960 to promote
mutual understanding and cooperation among the governments and
peoples of the Asia-Pacific region including the United States,
the East-West Center seeks to foster the development of an AsiaPacific community through cooperative study, training, and
research. Center activities focus on the promotion of shared
regional values and the building of regional agencies and
arrangements; the promotion of economic growth with equity,
stability, and sustainability; and the management and resolution
of critical regional as well as common national-level political,
economic, and social problems.
Issues addressed at the Center must have direct relevance for USAsia-Pacific understanding and relations.
The Fellow will conduct theoretical and applied research in areas
related to scientific, policy and institutional issues of
environmental and hazards risk management in the Asia Pacific.
Issues examined include impacts of environmental variability and
change on human welfare, the capacity of human societies to
respond to change, and options of enhancing the resilience of
governments, communities, businesses, and natural resources in the
Asia Pacific region. Topics of interest include ecological,
economic, and human health/welfare consequences of changes in
climate, atmospheric pollution, biodiversity, land use/cover; and
the availability/ quality of freshwater.
Additional topics include roles of institutions and information
systems in improving the region's environmental risk management
capabilities; the state of crucial natural resources (water, land,
forests, biological reserves); and the risks due to natural
hazards, emerging diseases, and food insecurity.
Candidates must have a demonstrated capacity in analytical and
policy-relevant research in an area of environmental risk
management with an emphasis on the Asia Pacific region that is
either complementary to the above areas or expands the scope of
the program. The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. or
equivalent in a relevant discipline (a Master's degree and ten
years relevant research experience is considered as equivalent to
the PhD) and a strong interest in the Asia Pacific region
(including the United States); capacity to lead international
teams in collaborative, interdisciplinary projects; and good
communication skills in the English language demonstrating the
ability to communicate results and recommendations in a clear and

concise manner to academic as well as informed policy, public, and
private-sector audiences. Candidates who wish to be considered for
a position at Levels 12 or 13 must demonstrate a record of success
in obtaining funding for research projects.
Desired qualifications include experience with academic, research,
and policy communities in the Asia Pacific region; quantitative
skills in formal risk assessment methods, spatial statistics,
remote sensing, econometrics, epidemiology, and/or other advanced
risk tools; demonstrated experience in publication, workshop
organization, proposal development and implementation; experience
with environmental management and/or risk management programs; and
fluency in an Asia-Pacific language.
Initial appointment would be for a period of three years. Salary
is commensurate with qualifications and experience and includes an
attractive benefits package. Annual salary (including a cost-ofliving allowance currently at 25%, but subject to change) is as
follows:
