We've done the work to bring you the best must-see intelligent docos that are just 2 good to miss. Put on your Sunday Best... One year on: the Japanese tsunami through the eyes of its youngest survivors. On March 11, 2011 Japan was hit by the greatest tsunami in a thousand years. Through compelling testimony from 7-10-year-old survivors, the film reveals how the deadly wave and the Fukushima nuclear accident have changed children's lives forever. The story unfolds at two key locations: a primary school where 74 children were killed by the tsunami; and a school close to the Fukushima nuclear plant, attended by children evacuated from the nuclear exclusion zone. Radiation and its possible long-term effects are a constant worry for parents and children who choose to remain in Fukushima. Many parents have placed severe restrictions on where their children can go, how they dress and what they can eat and drink. “A tsunami is something that comes from deep within the sea. When it arrives it steals our lives, houses and things precious to us.” - Reina, 10. “The radiation has stuck to the leaves so we're told we can't go in the garden without a mask.”- Kosei, 8. http://www.abc.net.au/tv/programs/sundaybest.htm PRODUCTION DETAILS: Producer: Aland Hayling. Page | 1 ABC2 Program Guide: National: Week 11 Program Highlights Monday 8:30pm Louis Theroux's Weird Weekends: Off Broadway Monday, 12 March 2012 Louis Theroux meets the real-life kids from Fame when he investigates the world of off- Broadway theatre. As he immerses himself in the subculture of actors struggling to make it in New York, he discovers some of the less-dignified jobs they take to make ends meet. James Lorenzo, an actor who has been trying to make it in the business for some 15 years, takes Louis to a photo shoot to start building the essential portfolio of head-shots. At his next stop,TVI, where acting is a business, actress Nicole Greenwood leads Louis through the process of looking for acting work - and is brutally honest about his chances. Louis is gutted to be told he is definitely not the leading-man type, but more of a character actor, and is dreading the audition he knows he has to face. Louis says: "I decided to set my sights low and auditioned for a Norwegian cruise liner. It was either that, or applying for a job as a dancing chocolate bar in Hershey, Pennsylvania." To his horror, the cruise liner gig turned out to be a very desirable job, with talented performers at the audition: "I humiliated myself utterly... it was my moment in the spotlight, and I basically had a panic attack. I found it particularly humiliating as I can carry a tune and play the guitar. "All in all, it was quite an eye opener. There's something both quite sad and quite funny about these people's struggle - they're all desperately looking for an A-grade gig, aiming to be the next Tom Cruise but, in the end, they're really happy to get a toothpaste ad." http://abc.net.au/iview/ PRODUCTION DETAILS: Louis Theroux's Weird Weekends is a BBC Production. Page | 2 ABC2 Program Guide: National: Week 11 Program Highlights Monday 9:30pm The Tudors Monday, 12 March 2012 Queen Katherine (Tamzin Merchant) is shocked by the King's orders that she be confined to her apartments. The investigation into her past moves with speed: Francis Dereham (Allen Leech) is arrested and interrogated. Joan Bulmer (Catherine Steadman) is questioned, as is the Dowager Duchess of Norfolk (Barbara Brennan), at whose home Joan and Katherine lived as young women and where their immoral acts are rumoured to have taken place. Dereham confesses that he and Katherine Howard had planned to get married and that he knew her carnally before she became Queen a serious revelation, but not adultery. Uncharacteristically, Henry (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) weeps when told of these discoveries. But his response is unsentimental and swift: Katherine Howard is removed from Court and her title as Queen withdrawn. Her pleas for understanding and forgiveness are coldly ignored but she knows she is lucky to escape with her life. Frances Dereham is brutally tortured as Lord Hertford (Max Brown) seeks to establish if Katherine Howard committed adultery. Dereham denies the charge but points to Thomas Culpepper (Torrance Coombs), who is promptly arrested. Furious that the betrayal was widely known, Henry isolates himself from his Court. Betrayed, bruised but unbowed, the King gives a banquet, attended only by 26 beautiful young women. http://abc.net.au/iview/ PRODUCTION DETAILS: A Peace Arch Entertainment and Take 5 Production in association with Showtime. Page | 7 ABC2 Program Guide: National: Week 11 Program Highlights Wednesday 9:30pm Kitchen Cabinet: Julie Bishop Wednesday, 14 March 2012 A half-hour entertainment series that serves up a delectable combination of political discussion and good food. Each week one of Australia's most respected political commentators - Annabel Crabb takes a plate and leads us into the homes and hearts of some of our most notable and engaging politicians. Annabel sits down and talks food, recipes and carbon tax with MPs from both sides of the fence. Food and politics are never separated for long. The best plots are hatched over lunch. The best stories are told over dinner. In Canberra, dinner bookings are an anthropological study in themselves. And the best way to get to know a politician is to break bread with one. Kitchen Cabinet will deliver a refreshing human touch, as we watch our politicians drop their guard and go about their daily life at home. Deputy Leader of the Opposition Julie Bishop has survived three bloody leadership battles, in turn serving Brendan Nelson, Malcolm Turnbull, and Tony Abbott. So what makes this Adelaide-born blue blood known for her famous ‘death stare’ - tick? Bishop discusses her childhood in the Adelaide Hills as the daughter of fifth generation cherry farmers, through to her rise as a Perth-based corporate lawyer whose political awakening was forged by WA Inc. Over risotto and rosé Bishop talks about her friendships across the political divide, surviving embarrassing policy gaffes, and what it takes to outlast, out run and out manoeuvre her opponents. She also confesses to some truly unusual jogging behaviour, and to having run away, as a child, to join the Brownies. http://abc.net.au/iview/ PRODUCTION DETAILS: ABC TV Production. Executive Producer is Sophia Zachariou.
