During our spiritual and ethical development unit in PDP we first focused on religious pluralism in order to explore how the many followers of different religions practice similar beliefs. We then discussed how those of different faiths can find a space in which to communicate about their beliefs in an atmosphere free of hatred/tension. We then moved on to discuss ethical behavior based on the Dal ai Lama’s book,
Ethics for the New Millennium . Some of the questions we explored included: what it means to be ethical as an individual, as a member of greater society and what role religions play in our ethics?
This essay should be a reflection based on the Dalai Lama book . Questions you must answer in the paper include: How does your view of ethical behavior compare to the Dalai Lama’s? How has your view of what it means to be ethical changed since being at BC (if it hasn’t changed, explain)? How does the Dalai Lama’s view of ethical behavior help us to engage in religious pluralism, particularly if we are strongly devoted to a particular religion? What are your responsibilities to the world in order to make it a more ethical place?
The purpose of this essay is to truly reflect, discuss and analyze your commitment to being an ethical member of society. Remember to provide details in your explanations, analyses and synthesis.
Make sure you tie the paper together with an introduction, conclusion and transitions.
Remember to thoroughly proofread in addition to spell check your paper before you turn it in. Some of you who are having difficulties with specific issues such as organizing your paper, or sentence structure should use the services available at the Writing
Center before turning this paper in.
Your essay should be 3-4 pages long, typed and double spaced. Make sure you margins are 1 inch, and font size is 12 point. I’d rather your paper go a bit over 4 pages, if you need to rather than have you mess with margins and font size.
Because you are specifically directed this time to tie in one text we have used in class, make sure you use proper citation within your paper when referencing the
Dalai Lama book.
