WEST HIGH SCHOOL A California Distinguished School 20401 Victor Street, Torrance CA 90503 www.whs.tusd.org (310) 533-4299 (310) 972-6483 fax PRINCIPAL’S NEWSLETTER August 2007 ______________ ______________________________ ____ _Volume 46, Number 1 Dear West High Parents and Students, Welcome to the 2007-2008 school year at West High School. This is an exciting time of year for all of us as the fall presents a time for new beginnings and an opportunity to refocus on the importance of setting and reaching goals for the year. West is a fantastic school for many reasons and the hard work of the faculty, staff and students this summer will result in another successful year for all members of the school community. Having just received a six-year accreditation term in our WASC review, we look forward to another productive year of learning, growth, and accomplishments as we begin the implementation of our goals and action plan. I am honored to take on the new challenge of principal at West High School. I have served in a variety of capacities at West for more than 10 years, and I will continue to work with students and parents to provide the best possible educational environment for every student. There are many opportunities for students at West to excel and we would like you, the parents, to join us in encouraging students to view school as an opportunity to improve their lives and create a pathway to the future. We have a proud tradition at West of “Excellence in Education” and it is our expectation that we all work together to perpetuate this tradition. We want every student to do their best and to maximize their individual potential. I invite you to be involved in our school, not only working with your student at home but in the many volunteer groups such as Booster Clubs, School Site Council, Advisory Committees, and PTSA. This newsletter contains all of the dates you should be aware of for the start of the school year including registration, the first day of school and Back to School Night. Please mark these dates on your calendars. I look forward to meeting you and wish you and your student the best for a successful school year. Sincerely, Mr. Ben Egan Principal If you would like to be notified by e-mail when new school information is posted, please access the West High website at www.whs.tusd.org and sign up under What’s Happening, Subscribe to Group E-mail. Collaboration Schedule 2007-2008 Because we seek continued improvement and have an improvement plan based on the WASC accreditation process, we have scheduled a series of staff development days for teacher collaboration. Started several years ago, and highly successful for their intended purpose, these days will again require early dismissal for students. After students leave for the day, teachers and administrators will meet by department or as an entire faculty to assess student work and plan strategies for the improvement of student learning, as required by the WASC improvement plan. Students will attend all their classes on collaboration days; class periods will be shortened. The school day will end on these days at 1:21 p.m. The regular school day will resume the next day. Please mark your calendars for the following collaboration days, all Tuesdays. September 25 October 16 November 13 December 4 January 15 February 26 March 18 April 15 June 3 To make West High School information more readily available to all parents, the Newsletter will be available on-line. You may access the Newsletter at www.whs.tusd.org and click on What’s Happening. PTSA President's Message I am excited about serving my second year as PTSA President at West. This last year, I was overwhelmed at the volunteer response that I saw and again look forward to working with many wonderful people. We have many opportunities for parents to volunteer here at West. In September, we begin with our one and only fundraiser, the football snack bar. In October, we have our annual Back to School Bake Sale which helps support our scholarship fund. We continue on with Red Ribbon Week, Honorary Service, College Fair, Parent Ed. Night, Grad Night, and so much more. Take some time to read through the packet, fill out the volunteer form and return it with your student on registration day or before. PTSA is where it all starts – parents, teachers and students working together to help make our school the best. I encourage you to become a member of the PTSA along with your student. Remember students, you too can be part of the PTSA by joining. Seniors, if you plan to apply for a scholarship…a membership is a must! Fill out the PTSA membership form and return it on registration day and don’t forget to buy your 2008 PTSA membership pin. This year the PTSA newsletter will again be mailed home for all parents and students to enjoy. The newsletter contains a lot of important information regarding school policy, what to look forward to, a school calendar, and much more. Look for our first issue in September along with the PTSA West High directory. Again, I look forward to the 2007-2008 school year. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me! Enjoy your summer and see you in September. Cheryl Pivovaroff PTSA President CONGRATULATIONS TO THE WEST HIGH PTSA 2006-2007 SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS! Please come and help make this a productive year for our ELL students. Many thanks! Nadeane Peterson ELD Teacher/Coordinator 533-4299 x7642 Important Information About School Funding and Student Attendance As a result of Senate Bill 727, beginning July 1, 1998, school districts no longer receive funding from the State of California for pupils who are absent from school. This includes all absences, even those for illness, medical or doctor appointments, or for the purpose of attending funeral services of a member of the immediate family. In other words, schools receive state funding only for students who are actually in attendance at school. If you find it necessary to keep your child out of school for reasons other than an illness, we encourage you to send your child to school for at least a part of the day so that your child will not be counted absent and also will not miss out on important class assignments. We encourage you as parents to reinforce the importance of good school attendance and to make every effort to send your child to school on a regular basis. Affidavits of Residence Students attending West High on an Affidavit of Residence must renew it each year. The student and guardian will need to schedule an appointment with the Dean of Students at West High. Appointments will be scheduled on August 1, 2, 3, or after September 5. Discipline Policy and Procedures Outlined Discipline policies and procedures are outlined in the student handbook, Warrior Ways, which each student will receive on the first day of school. The West High “Discipline Procedures” pamphlet further describes disciplinary violations and their consequences as does the TUSD Discipline Matrix included in the summer packet. We request that you and your student carefully review these policies. Change of Address Families are required to report to us, in writing, a change of address within thirty (30) calendar days of moving. Proof of this change is also required (current ORIGINAL gas, electric or cable bill). New green emergency cards must also be completed. Failure to report changes of address may result in withdrawal from West High School. Discipline Policy Highlights: Please read the enclosed 2007 - 2008 TUSD Discipline Matrix carefully. West High randomly uses a Breathalyzer at every school dance, on and off campus, sponsored by West High School. The Breathalyzer may also be used at any other school activity or during school hours if a student is suspected of being under the influence of alcohol. Remember every person who possesses, consumes, sells, gives, or delivers to any other person, any alcoholic beverage in or on any public school house, or any of the grounds thereof, is guilty of a misdemeanor (BPC 25608). Bullying and harassment are not acceptable behaviors. Students committing offences related to bullying and/or harassment are subject to penalties, which may include suspension, adjustment transfer, and possible expulsion. The TUSD School Board has approved the use of dogs on campus for the purpose of detecting students in possession of drugs. They will be used randomly on campus throughout the year to ensure the safety of all students. Students who receive two or more U’s on their quarter report card will lose dance privileges until the next report card. NEW TUSD POLICY VOLUNTEER ASSISTANCE ON CAMPUS The District recognizes and acknowledges the service volunteers and guests contribute and the additional responsibilities of ensuring the health and safety of the students they serve. Visitors and guests will be required to sign in and out at the Principal’s office as well as show their drivers license or photo identification. Volunteers, those who serve on a regular or ongoing basis, will also be required to complete a Volunteer Application/Agreement and have a Megan’s Law Background Check completed prior to rendering service. Proof of a current negative Tuberculosis test is also required. Simple Fundraising Do you shop at Target?
