Summer Firefighter Academy 2013 — The purpose of this Academy is to produce high quality firefighters who will strengthen
the ability of fire protection service in order to provide a higher degree of customer service. A mandatory orientation will be
held June 16 at 2pm. Classes will begin June 17 at 8am and run Monday-Friday and a few Saturdays. A complete schedule will
be provided at the orientation. The Academy will end August 16 with a graduation ceremony. Topics covered will be Firefighter
I and II courses; Hazardous Materials; Rapid Intervention Team Certification; Physical Training; and Live Fire Scenarios.
Candidates must complete an application packet to be accepted into the Academy. There are a limited number of seats and NO
walk-ins will be accepted. A few local fire departments have agreed to allow candidates to be housed at fire stations. A $175
non-refundable fee is required for student supplies including textbooks, uniforms, and other supplies. Also, there is a $1.30 fee

International Trauma Life Support (ITLS Advanced) / 2 courses /Registration Fee: $65 / Card Fee: $20

ITLS is accepted internationally as the standard training course for prehospital trauma care. It's used as a state-of-the-art continuing education course —
and as an essential curriculum in many paramedic, EMT and first-responder training programs. ITLS courses combine classroom learning and hands-on skill
stations. Scenario assessment stations enable you to put your learning to work in simulated trauma situations. ITLS courses are designed, managed and
delivered by course directors, coordinators and instructors experienced in EMS, pre-hospital care and the ITLS approach.
Online Hybrid EMS Methodology Course (EMS-3074)

Cleveland Community College is pleased to offer an EMS Specific Methodology Course. This course is offered in conjunction with 911 eLearning Solutions,
LLC. This course will assist potential EMS instructors in meeting the requirements for NC Office of EMS Level I Instructor certification. The
course will start on June 5, 2013, and two onsite days (July 13 and August 10) will be required for successful course completion, as well as
completion of online course work. Preregistration is required. The cost of the course is $175, unless fee exempt. To register for this course

AHA BLS Healthcare Provider (CPR) / Registration Fee: $65

In this classroom-based course, healthcare professionals learn to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR to victims of all
ages, use an AED, and relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner. Students must arrive at class with the AHA Basic Life Support for
Healthcare Providers Student Text (current edition). The text is available for purchase in the College Bookstore. Students will not be admitted
without the student text! NC Fire/Rescue/EMS personnel are fee exempt for this course. Classes will be held at the Brown Emergency Training

This is a basic First Aid and CPR class. This course is not suitable for those healthcare providers requiring AHA BLS Healthcare Provider CPR
certification. Students must arrive at class with the AHA Heartsaver® First Aid CPR & AED Student Manual. The text is available for purchase in
the College Bookstore. Students will not be admitted without the student text! NC Fire/Rescue/EMS personnel as well as Public School System
personnel are fee exempt for this course. Classes will be held at the Brown Emergency Training Center located at 2423 Kings Road, Shelby, NC

This course teaches Key changes reflecting the new science from the 2010 AHA Guidelines for CPR and ECC

Anatomy & Physiology (EMS 3000)
Course begins October 22, 2013 and ends November 21, 2013. Classes meet Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9am-5:30pm
Registration Fee: $175
This course provides a basic study of the structure and function of the human body. Topics include a basic study of the body systems as well as
an introduction to homeostasis, cells, tissues, nutrition, acid-base balance, and electrolytes. 80 hours. This class meets the Anatomy & Physiology
requirement for entry into EMT-P classes as pre or co-requisite.

EMT-Paramedic (EMT-P) to Paramedic Transition Course

Course begins June 8, 2013 and ends June 9, 2013 (Saturday/Sunday) from 9am-5:30pm
The EMT-Paramedic (EMT-P) to Paramedic Transition course is designed to meet the required additions, and deletions to satisfy the requirement for
NHTSA, NREMT, and USDOT. This course will provide the necessary content to transition a current Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic to the
standard required of those individuals holding National Paramedic certification. (This course will satisfy the transition course requirement, for EMT-P’s
with a NREMT certification). The course will be held June 8 & 9, 2013 at the Brown Emergency Training Center. The cost is 65.00, unless fee exempt.

This course assists credentialed EMT-Paramedic’s in meeting the requirements for NC Office of EMS re-credentialing, and can serve as a means of the
EMT-Paramedic meeting the required continuing education/refresher course for the National Registry of EMT’s. The fast paced course will start on June
17, 2013, and end on July 20, 2013. There will be two required class meetings, Monday June 17, 2013 from 1700-2200, and Saturday July 20, 2013 from
0900-1730 at the Brown Emergency Training Center. The cost of the course is 175, unless fee exempt. To register for this course please call Teresa

This course builds upon skills and assessments learned in the EMT-Basic course, and transitions students to be able to provide advanced level care.
Topics include, but are not limited to, anatomy and physiology; advanced airway management; IV therapy and emergency drug therapy; cardiology;
EKG interpretation; and medical and trauma patient assessment. Students will have vast opportunities for hands on experience in the clinical
setting. Student prerequisites: currently certified as EMT-Basic (NC or National Registry); possess a high school diploma or GED; pass an
entrance exam assessing reading and math skills (must be 12-grade level); and Anatomy and Physiology. NC Fire/Rescue/EMS personnel are fee

Registration Fee: $175
This course introduces basic emergency medical care. Topics include preparatory, airway, patient assessment, medical emergencies, trauma,
infants and children, and operations. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve North
Carolina State or National Registry EMT-Basic certification. Students must complete a reading placement test the first night of class. Student
prerequisites: High school diploma or GED or at least 17 years of age (and attending high school). If student is under 18 years of age, he/she
must provide a Cleveland Community College Dual Enrollment form stating the high school he/she is attending and courses taken.

Geriatric Education for Emergency Medical Services (GEMS) Registration Fee: $65

The proportion of the aged in society today is greater than ever before, and growing faster than any other segment of our population. Current indications
are that approximately 34% of calls for emergency medical services, or 3.4 million emergency responses involve patients over the age of 60. GEMS
represents the most credible and complete source of pre-hospital medical information for older adults. The GEMS course is innovative, comprehensive, and
highly visual with: Case-Based Lectures, Live Action Video, Hands-on Skill Stations, and Small Group Scenarios.
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) is a classroom, video-based, Instructor-led course that uses a series of simulated pediatric emergencies to
reinforce the important concepts of a systematic approach to pediatric assessment, basic life support, PALS treatment algorithms, effective resuscitation
and team dynamics. The goal of the PALS Course is to improve the quality of care provided to seriously ill or injured children, resulting in improved
outcomes. Students must come to class with PALS Provider Manual.
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

Course begins November 9, 2013 and ends November 10, 2013 (Saturday/Sunday) from 9am-5:30pm
ACLS is an advanced, instructor-led classroom course that highlights the importance of team dynamics and communication, systems of care and immediate
post-cardiac-arrest care. It also covers airway management and related pharmacology. In this course, skills are taught in large, group sessions and small,
group learning and testing stations where case-based scenarios are presented. Students must come to class with ACLS Student Manual.

Pediatric- ITLS

Course date is December 13, 2013 (Friday) from 9am-5:30pm.
ITLS Pediatric continues the training of the Basic and Advanced courses with an emphasis on understanding and responding to trauma in children. The
eight-hour course teaches the proper assessment, stabilization and packaging of pediatric trauma patients. It also highlights techniques for communicating
with young patients and their parents. Hands-on stations include:




Patient assessment and management
Airway management and chest decompression
Fluid resuscitation
Spine motion restriction — pediatric immobilization device
Pediatric Education for Prehospital Professionals (PEPP)
Registration Fee: $65
Course begins December 14, 2013 and ends December 15, 2013 (Saturday/Sunday) from 9am-5:30pm.
This exciting program is the first of its kind designed especially for (1) First Responders, (2) EMTs, and (3) Paramedics. PEPP represents a
comprehensive source of prehospital medical information for the emergent care of infants and children. It will teach professionals how to better
access and manage ill or injured children.
Certification classes are scheduled to test on the final date of class unless otherwise noted.

Regional Testing requirement effective January 1, 2013
Attention all students, instructors and interested parties…
The North Carolina Fire and Rescue Commission approved the following changes at their October 9, 2012 meeting to go into effect 1/1/2013. Candidates
for Instructor and Fire Officer Certifications must meet all requirements for each level prior to registering for Instructor and Fire Officer Certification
exams. Instructor and Fire Officer Candidates will have one year from the date of the course completion to take the state exams at regional testing.
*All required documentation must be submitted with registration form or form will not be processed; see Instructor and Fire Officer
Registration form for all requirements.
***Students who complete the combo course for Officer I and II or Instructor I and II must take the combo exam at regional testing but
only if they meet all the requirements for both certifications. No other options. The student must have all the requirements within one year
of completing the class to be eligible for the regional test and must submit all required documents when registering.
The Fire and Rescue Commission also approved the following changes at their October 9, 2012 meeting to go into effect 1/1/2013.
Candidates for Fire and Life Safety Educator certifications will take Certification exams at Regional testing and must complete all
requirements for each level prior to registering for each levels’ certification exams. (Example – to test for FLSE I you must have completed
all three classes in Level I)
