North Carolina Thermal Imaging School — This course is an advanced, interactive school designed to train firefighters on the technology, uses, and limitations of thermal imaging cameras. The school will consist of an evening classroom lecture covering thermal imaging technology, operational terms, uses, limitations, as well as troubleshooting and maintenance of thermal imagers. A large portion of the school will consist of “hands on” training evolutions designed to present the student with opportunities to learn how to use thermal imagers on a variety of emergency situations. The School will cover various TIC technologies; using TIC with V.E.S.; large area search techniques; using TICs for overhaul; recognizing various building components utilizing a TIC; non-fire emergency TIC use; using TICs with size-up; TIC limitations. Spring Firefighter Academy 2014 — The purpose of this Academy is to produce high quality firefighters who will strengthen the ability of fire protection service in order to provide a higher degree of customer service. A mandatory orientation will be held January 5 at 2pm. Classes will begin January 6 at 8am and run Monday-Friday and a few Saturdays. A complete schedule will be provided at the orientation. The Academy will end March 7 with a graduation ceremony. Topics covered will be Firefighter I and II courses; Hazardous Materials; Rapid Intervention Team Certification; Physical Training; and Live Fire Scenarios. Candidates must complete an application packet to be accepted into the Academy. There are a limited number of seats and NO walk-ins will be accepted. A few local fire departments have agreed to allow candidates to be housed at fire stations. A $175 non-refundable fee is required for student supplies including textbooks, uniforms, and other supplies. Also, there is a $1.30 fee for student insurance. This class meets the Anatomy & Physiology requirement for entry into EMT-P classes as pre or co-requisite. EMT Basic to Paramedic (must be credentialed as EMT-Basic) Course begins December 3, 2013 and ends November 5, 2014. This course builds upon skills and assessments learned in the EMT-Basic course, and transitions students to be able to provide advanced level care. Students will have vast opportunities for hands on experience in the clinical setting. Topics include preparatory, airway, patient assessment, medical emergencies, trauma, infants and children, and operations. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve North Carolina State or National Registry EMT-Basic certification. Students must complete a reading placement test the first night of class. Student prerequisites: High school diploma or GED or at least 17 years of age (and attending high school). If student is under 18 years of age, he/she must provide a Cleveland Community College Dual Enrollment form stating the high school he/she is attending and courses taken. International Trauma Life Support (ITLS Advanced) / Registration Fee: $70 / Card Fee: $20 Course Date: October 12, 2013 (Saturday) 9am-5:30pm. ITLS is accepted internationally as the standard training course for prehospital trauma care. It's used as a state-of-the-art continuing education course — and as an essential curriculum in many paramedic, EMT and first-responder training programs. ITLS courses combine classroom learning and hands-on skill stations. Scenario assessment stations enable you to put your learning to work in simulated trauma situations. ITLS courses are designed, managed and delivered by course directors, coordinators and instructors experienced in EMS, pre-hospital care and the ITLS approach.
