Kenelm Catholic Youth Ministry Development Worker
JOB DESCRIPTION
All senior staff and workers are employed to achieve the aims laid out in the BCYS Mission
Statement. To accomplish this, all staff will need to keep up to date with the religious and
social issues that affect young people today. They also need to work within the ethos and
the conditions of employment for the Archdiocese of Birmingham. The BCYS is a branch
of the new Kenelm Youth Trust that works to serve parish based youth ministry.
This person will be natural communicator with young people and have an active faith to
share. Ideally you also have some training skills to support youth leaders. We are looking
for an excellent organiser, who is proficient with IT and who has a minimum of three years’
experience of working with teenagers. A relevant professional qualification is desirable.
Rate of pay £18,500-£22,000 pro-rata (based on 40 hours), depending on experience and
qualifications. Contracted 32 hours per week.
General terms of employment
Enhanced CRB disclosure is a condition of employment.
There will be a probationary period of six months for the successful applicant.
Holiday entitlement is 28 days including bank holidays, pro-rata.
Key working relationships
Line-Manager: To meet regularly (once a month) with your line manager for managerial
supervision.
Accountable to
The Director of Youth Services who will meet with you periodically. You will be asked
occasionally to report on your work to the Kenelm Youth Board.
Location
 One post will serve parishes across the 3 Deaneries of Banbury, Oxford North and
Oxford South. The office base for this post can be negotiated.

The other post will serve the Deaneries of Dudley, Kidderminster, Wolverhampton &
Worcester. The office base for this post can be negotiated.
Background
These new positions will help to develop Catholic youth ministry provision which meets its
key goals through facilitating parishes to develop new models of ministry and supporting
existing groups and work. It requires on-going consultation with parish priests, Deans and
youth leaders in the area to begin to assess needs and develop structures that will enable
effective relational youth ministry to take place.

Parishes and Deaneries

On-going consultation with parish priests, Deans and young people in your area to
assess needs and develop structures that will enable youth provision to take place.

Establish a good working relationship with all existing youth group leaders and
youth ministers in your deaneries.

To develop new and innovative catholic youth ministry to, for, and with young
people and young adults targeting 11-25yrs in your region in order to draw them
closer to Christ.

Visit each parish youth group, meet the leaders, the young people, publicise BCYS
events. Help create possible strategies for development. To support existing youth
ministry groups and activities in addressing a holistic and evangelistic programme
of relational youth ministry.
Where appropriate arrange follow up visits, offer support with authentic, intentional
and relational Catholic youth ministry, programme planning, suggestions for youth
group nights, faith development, icebreakers, session material, night prayer.

Build up regular communication via email/text/phone calls/encourage use of the
BCYS website and other new media.

Help parishes with recruitment of volunteers to parish youth ministry and support
the establishment of parish or deanery core teams.

Offer training courses to volunteer youth leaders through the ‘Bethsaida’ course,
enabling them to develop their leadership skills and knowledge, so that they can
begin or improve their work with young people. Promote national training
opportunities such as with CYMfed and encourage the on-going formation and
development of all involved in youth ministry i.e. Certificate and Diploma in New
Evangelisation and Youth Ministry, Maryvale.

To make available resource material for those who work with young people.
Working with Young People
 Help young people develop a sense of belonging to the Church through their
involvement in Church life and in particular to develop, where possible, regular
Eucharistic opportunities for young people.

To develop leadership skills amongst the young people in our parishes through the
Diocesan training programme, ‘VITAL’, and other opportunities.

To develop work with young adults to encourage their formation for participation in
the life and mission of the Church.

Engagement with Schools
 Work alongside chaplaincy teams or help to create new chaplaincy teams, to
develop ministry among young people and to build bridges with the local parish
communities and school communities.

To liaise with secondary schools in your area, developing links with chaplains, lay
chaplains and key personnel.
Communication
• To be an advocate for young Catholics and youth work in your area.

To develop the use of new forms of media in reaching young people.

Help publicise parish youth groups in the local schools and parish communities,
enabling the creation of display boards, links to websites etc.

Create networks for youth leaders to share, pray and support one another in the
development and deepening of their ministry among young people.

To participate in Kenelm Trust / diocesan wide youth ministry meetings.

To help in the production of a regular newsletter and annual report that will be sent
to all parishes and youth leaders.

To maintain and update a page on the website and in Catholic today relating to
regional activities.

To liaise with the Diocesan Vocations department, CAFOD and other organisations.
Events
 To organise local events which support the spiritual and educational development,
and service and leadership opportunities of young people, in collaboration with
young people, local youth leaders and priests.

Where deaneries consider it appropriate, support and encourage a regular Deanery
youth Mass and catechetical and social activities to bring young people together
e.g. such as Life Teen.

To assist with the promotion of Diocesan youth events and pilgrimages in your area.

To arrange and lead regular retreats for young people to Soli House, Alton Castle,
annual summer camp etc...

Administration
 Ensure the administrative tasks associated with the above are well organised, and
appropriate records are kept as required.

Submit monthly time sheets to your line manager and/or Director of Youth Services.

Follow the policies and procedures of the Kenelm Youth Trust.


To be fully informed about the work of Alton Castle and the new centre to be based
at Alton – to work alongside staff in other parts of the youth service where possible.

To follow Safeguarding Policy and practice in the Archdiocese of Birmingham,
promoting a safe environment for youth ministry in parishes.

To follow Health & Safety policy and practices in all aspects of work. To follow
Diocesan / Kenelm Trust guidelines for staff - see staff handbook for details.

To avail of regular spiritual personal opportunities such as spiritual direction,
retreats etc., to enhance one’s own faith journey.
