News ******** First ZigBee 2006-Compliant Platform Launched Texas Instruments has announced the launch of its first ZigBee 2006-compliant platform. TI received compliance for its ZigBee Z-Stack, which is certified for the CC2420 transceiver and CC2430 SOC. The CC2430 combines the performance of the CC2420 RF transceiver with an industry-standard enhanced MCU, giving developers 8kB of RAM and a large peripheral set. The CC2420ZDK Pro and CC2430ZDK Pro kits deliver the elements required for ZigBee development, including hardware to evaluate, demonstrate, prototype, and develop software targeting various ZigBee applications. The kits also include Z-stack, TIMAC, an evaluation version of IAR Embedded Workbench, and application examples. News ******** PSP Modeling Software Agilent Technologies is shipping a model parameter extraction tool for the advanced PSP CMOS device model. Developed for use with its IC Characterization and Analysis Program (IC-CAP) software platform, the PSP model extraction package uses the IC-CAP flexible architecture to accommodate the PSP model. The model promises to provide more accuracy than existing BSIM models for designs with constrained geometries and should help designers more accurately model CMOS devices. The package contains an interface for measurement collection, recommended extraction flows, and model implementation. The package has been verified with 65nm data from various CMOS foundries and is included as part of the most recent IC-CAP. Agilent Technologies >> http://www.agilent.com/ ******** 4. News ******* New Gigabit Ethernet and Ethernet 10/100 IP Arasan Chip Systems has announced the availability of its Gigabit Ethernet Controller Core and Ethernet 10/100 Controller, which support the IEEE 802.3-2002 standard with the media and gigabit media independent interfaces (MII and GMII). The controllers support 10/100/1000 in full-duplex and 10/100 in half-duplex. In addition to four-wire MII and eight-wire GMII support, a two-wire management data IO and clock interface is available for control of an IEEE 802.3 compliant external PHY. The core also supports reduced MII (RMII) and GMII (RGMII) interfaces. Optional features include jumbo frame support for frames larger than 1,518 bytes and magic packet support for wake up in PC-type applications. An additional physical coding sub-layer with an 8bit/10bit interface is available for optical fiber applications, letting the gigabit controller support copper and optical fiber applications simultaneously. Arasan Chip Systems >> http://www.arasan.com/ ******** 5. News ******** Dual IC Drives Two DC Motors Allegro Microsystems has announced the A3995 DMOS full-bridge PWM motor driver, which provides up to 2.4 amps per output for independently driving two DC motors. Developed for the office automation and industrial markets, the A3995 provides a peak output of 36 volts and includes two fixed off-time PWM current regulators that operate in either fast- or slow-decay mode. The driver features synchronous rectification control circuitry as well as phase, enable, and mode inputs for controlling speed, torque, direction, and brake and coast functions. The chip includes thermal shutdown circuitry with hysteresis and under-voltage lockout and crossover current protection. Allegro Microsystems >> http://www.allegromicro.com/ ***************** 6. International News ***************** Korea's Hynix Announces 60nm 1GB DDR2 800MHz-Based Modules Hynix Semiconductor has introduced its 60nm 1GB DDR2 DRAM and an accompanying family of components and high-capacity modules. The 1GB and 2GB UDIMMs promise operating speeds of 800MHz. The 1GB package size lets Hynix manufacture 4GB and higher-density registered and fully buffered DIMMs (RDIMMs and FDDIMMs). Planar dual-row assembly eliminates the need to stack components in some modules, reducing overall manufacturing costs. Very low profile modules are also enabled by the small package. Hynix Semiconductor >> http://www.hynix.com/ ***************** 7. International News ***************** German Micronas Delivers ATSC A/53-Compliant Demodulator German semiconductor manufacturer Micronas has announced the DRX3931J, an 8VSB and QAM 64/256 demodulator with an integrated IF amplifier. The DRX3931J demodulates standard- and highdefinition television signals in compliance with ATSC-A/53, the North American digital television broadcast standard and QAM 64/256 signals as specified by ITU-T J.83 Annex B. The 7x7mm, 48-pin QFN package is geared toward space-constrained designs, such as multituner applications, PC-based systems, and tuner Network Interface Modules (NIMs). The integrated IF amplifier lets designers use lower-cost tuner modules, reducing overall system cost. The DRX3931J solution includes software modules to control the device, and all modules share a common API. Micronas >> http://www.micronas.com/ **************************** 8. Featured Book ************************ Debugging Embedded Systems by Vijay K. Madisetti, Tankut Akgul ISBN: 0387256369 Publisher: Springer Debugging software and embedded systems has become more of an art and less of a science. Debugging Embedded Systems outlines a step-by-step methodology and process for testing and debugging hardware and software in embedded systems. This hands-on guide takes the reader through the tools that have been developed for hardware support of debugging embedded software and new standards. The authors cover methodologies such as Nexus 5001 (led by Motorola) and the IEEE-ISTO 5001. This book is aimed at managers and system engineers working with embedded systems.
