UNMANNED, UNDERWATER VEHICLES UNDER THE CONFERENCE SPOTLIGHT AT

OCEANOLOGY INTERNATIONAL 2014

“In the wider world of technology we see an accelerating pace of change. We see the emergence of new materials, new sensor technologies, new computing capabilities; and all of this is changing very, very rapidly, and these changes are influencing what's happening in the world of marine technology.

“Perhaps the most significant technological change that we're seeing is the move from using conventional ships to using unmanned vehicles. We’re seeing the emergence of many new unmanned vehicles and platforms made possible by novel new materials, novel power sources, and advances in computing ,” – so says Professor Ralph Rayner, Conference

Chairman, Oceanology International 2014 in a video highlighting what will be seen at the world's largest exhibition for marine science and technology taking place Tuesday 11 -

Thursday 13 March 2014 at London’s ExCeL.

Not only will unmanned underwater vehicles feature in the exhibition, but there is a day-long conference ‘Unmanned Underwater Vehicle Showcase’ devoted to them too. It is chaired by

Dr Bob Allwood, Chief Executive, Society for Underwater Technology (SUT) and Ian Gallett, the SUT’s Business Development Executive and takes place on Thursday 13 March.

As Bob Allwood explains:

“The Unmanned Underwater Vehicles Showcase – or UUVS as it became known – started life as a niche annual event held at what is now the National

Oceanography Centre in Southampton almost 15 years ago. The brainchild of the Society for

Underwater Technology’s Underwater Robotics Group, it gained a reputation as one of the leading events in this field.

“Since 2012, the event has been incorporated into Oceanology International to take full advantage of the ever increasing visitor attendance and of course the most comprehensive of exhibitions. Unmanned underwater vehicles do not get a lot of press in the general media of the offshore oil and gas world. However, they now form a critical enabling technology for the industry , without which today’s deep water developments could not have been contemplated.

“The UUVS conference session promises to be a top quality event. Not only will we be updated by the leading companies working in this field, but the research community has not been ignored. This gives me particular pleasure as an ex-academic who has worked in this field – albeit long ago!”

His cochair, Ian Gallett adds: “We are delighted that UUVS will be forming part of OI14 this year and at the response we have had to the Call for Papers. There was a very wide range of subject matter put forward for consideration covering all aspects of machines underwater and the equipment needed to work successfully in this very difficult environment. This made

it very difficult to select the papers to be presented during the conference, but at least it ensures a very interesting and varied set of sessions, with prestigious speakers from a wide variety of backgrounds and countries. Under-ice technology is to the fore as is the high level of development of underwater vehicles that are now finding ever more roles. It promises to be a very interesting day.

The conference, which, like all the component parts of Oceanology International, is free to attend, has a great line-up of presentations and speakers:

 Nereid UI (Under Ice) Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Project, Andy Bowen,

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution

Concepts of Fleet Operations with Modular AUVs in the Offshore Sector, Dr Thomas

Hilller, Teledyne Gavia

Bluefin-9M: The Latest in Two-Person-Portable Modularity for Offshore, Security, and

Research Applications, Mikell Taylor, Bluefin Robotics

From Survey Class to Inspection Class: The Evolutionary Upgrades to the C-

Surveyor Line of AUVs, Jami Cheramie, C&C Technologies

A Low-Cost ROV System for Full Ocean Depth Operations, Dr Fredrik Søreide,

Promare

AUV Market Forecast, tbc, Douglas-Westwood

Data, Data, Everywhere. We Are Now in the Big Data Era, Michael Liddell, Fugro

Survey

Using Advanced Software Systems to Replicate Expert Processes in the Underwater

Space, Dr Ioseba Tena, SeeByte

Internet-Enabled Smart ROVs: Future of ROV Piloting, Edin Omerdic, Mobile &

Marine Robotics Research Centre, University of Limerick

Pipeline Inspection with AUV, Per Espen Hagen, Kongsberg Maritime

Enabling Future Autonomous UUV Operational Networks, Paul Watson, Ocean

Power Technologies

Also on the conference scene

Ocean science and technology lie at the very heart of OI 2014, with the conference programme picking up on each major technology strand featured in the exhibition. As well as the traditional areas

– ocean observing systems, hydrography, geophysics, and site investigation, there are two new conference programmes this year: underwater positioning and metrology; and underwater communications.

Oil & gas ‘Operating in Extreme Environments’; marine renewables, and maritime security also come under the conference spotlight. Topical panel discussions looking at areas which are creating a growing demand for marine science and technology – aquaculture, ballast water and subsea mining are an OI 2014 introduction.

UUVs in the Exhibition

In the video speaking about UUVs , Ralph Rayner goes on to explain: “The growing use of unmanned underwater vehicles is also driving developments in sensors. It’s driving the development of lower power sensors that will operate for longer durations with much higher degrees of reliability than has perhaps been required in the past.

“With the increasing use of autonomous vehicles comes the need for better underwater communications, and better underwater positioning. As we move towards exploiting resources in ever more difficult parts of the ocean, in deeper water, in harsher environments these technologies come into their own in making this possible.

“Equally we have huge societal challenges - ocean acidification and changing climate - all of which demand the ability to make long-term observations of the world's oceans on a reliable

and cost-effective basis. The Oceanology International exhibition showcases all of these technologies and more. And it illustrates how they're brought to bear on pressing societal needs and practical problems of working in the ocean environment .”

The exhibitor directory on the show’s website at www.oceanologyinternational.com/Exhibitor-

Directory/# categorises exhibits – with AUVs and ROVs being options available, in addition to the markets in which they are used.

Established in 1969, Oceanology International attracts those involved with all aspects of marine science and technology from all over the globe – total attendance was 7,669 in 2012.

The exhibition this year is the largest ever with the 520 exhibiting companies from over 35 countries taking an additional 10% more space than at the record-breaking 2012 event.

Visitors can also see an array of vessels dockside, including survey and windfarm support vessels and dockside demonstrations; and there is an expanding programme of associated events run by supporting organisations.
