We’ve got a board certified, full time psychiatrist, two of them, here on island … 01:19:09:18 MARIA HINOJOSA: Is that enough? 01:19:10:08 CRAIG OSWALD: … to treat veterans. 01:19:11:08 MARIA HINOJOSA: You feel like having two psychiatrists on the island to treat veterans, is that enough? Do you wish there was more? 01:19:18:13 CRAIG OSWALD: I think right now, I think right now we’re doing well. Because we have some addition mental health staff that we have added to the clinic. Namely social workers and nurses. 01:19:28:01 B-ROLL OF VETERANS IN VET CLINIC MARIA HINOJOSA VO: I PRESSED HIM ON WHAT I’D BEEN HEARING FROM VETERANS ABOUT A LACK OF SERVICES, AND SPECIFICALLY WHAT ROLAND SAID ABOUT THE TREATMENT HE NEEDS FOR HIS PTSD. ABYN202 - ISLAND OF WARRIORS HOME VIDEO SCRIPT FINAL, 8/27/14 01:19:37:10 SOT CRAIG OSWALD INTV. W. MARIA MARIA HINOJOSA So everything seems to look great. I mean great facility but the stories that we’re hearing from this particular veteran don’t jive with … 01:19:47:16 CRAIG OSWALD: Right, doesn’t line up with what one would expect. 01:19:50:11 MARIA HINOJOSA: Yeah, with what you’re saying, frankly. 01:19:52:15 01:20:01:18 CRAIG OSWALD: It doesn’t line up with what I would expect either. We do have some specialized types of PTSD care available in Honolulu. 01:20:05:10 MARIA HINOJOSA: But he says, “I’m from Guam, this is my home … 01:20:06:13 CRAIG OSWALD: Right, right. 01:20:12:08 MARIA HINOJOSA … I’m an American citizen, I deserve to get the treatment that I need here on Guam.” 01:20:15:00 CRAIG OSWALD: Right, right. And we agree, and we agree. And, so… 01:20:23:00 MARIA HINOJOSA: So where’s the snafu? Is it that the federal government in Washington just doesn’t see these veterans? Guam is so far away? CRAIG OSWALD: No, no, I don’t think so. No, I think Guam is is very well known, you know, to big VA, to Washington DC. And so our particular health care system has actually received several million dollars, several million dollars, that’s being spent directly on veterans in the Pacific. 01:20:40:15 B-ROLL MARIA INTV. WITH GOVERNOR CALVO MARIA HINOJOSA VO: BUT THE HIGHEST ELECTED OFFICIAL ON THE ISLAND, GOVERNOR EDDIE CALVO, SAID THAT THE SENATE CUT MENTAL HEALTH CARE FUNDS FOR GUAM TWO YEARS IN A ROW. 01:20:50:01 SOT INTV WITH GOVERNOR CALVO GOVERNOR CALVO: And I advised them. I said, “Folks, these are statistics of all our veteran population. Some of the statistics on the suicides that we’ve had. But because we don’t have a vote in the Senate, you know, that would mean that they would have to have the heart of Mother Theresa, uh, because it does not effect their home state. 01:21:10:00 SOT INTV WITH GOVERNOR CALVO MARIA HINOJOSA: Is the United States right now living up to its commitment to Guam in terms of what its doing for the veterans? 01:21:18:07 GOVERNOR CALVO: The federal government, has not done their part, to assist a very patriotic, uh, group of American citizens fighting in so many distant lands, in areas that have never tasted democracy, yet these American citizens of Guam really have not felt what true democracy is all about. What do you call a people that cannot vote for their representatives that make the laws? What do you call a people that can’t vote in electoral college to elect a chief executive that will send us to war. To not offend anyone, I guess I’ll keep it as a non-self-governing territory. But I guess in the 19th century sense, you could call it a colony. 01:22:16:10 B-ROLL ROLAND HELPING MOM INTO CAR MARIA HINOJOSA VO: BACK AT HOME, ROLAND FILLS HIS DAYS BY CARING FOR HIS MOTHER, WHO HAS LOU GEHRIG’S DISEASE. 01:22:26:22 B-ROLL ROLAND HELPING MOM INTO CAR ROLAND ADA: I worry about my mom; I try to take care of her a lot. So that’s kind of what keeps my mind off of stuff. ABYN202 - ISLAND OF WARRIORS HOME VIDEO SCRIPT FINAL, 8/27/14 01:22:36:14 SOT ROLAND DRIVING IN CAR ROLAND ADA: Recently I actually, uh, had an episode where I exploded, you know, lost my temper, had some very bad thoughts about doing very bad things to people or myself so. 01:22:55:19 B-ROLL ROLAND AT BAR PLAYING POOL MARIA HINOJOSA VO: THOUGH ROLAND HAS ONLY BEEN BACK FOR A YEAR AND A HALF, HE HAS ALREADY GIVEN UP ON THE V.A. SERVICES OFFERED ON THE ISLAND. 01:23:03:22 B-ROLL ROLAND PLAYING POOL, DRINKING BEER ROLAND ADA: I’ve already done it and it didn’t help. It actually made me more frustrated, then I just put to the side and say “screw this.” I ended up going back to alcohol, it always just numbed everything. But then, it’s like soda. You shake it too much, and you open it and it explodes. That's kinda how I am. Is you can only shake me so many times before I explode. MARIA HINOJOSA VO: VICTOR FEELS LIKE HE’S STABILIZING AND ON THE ROAD TO RECOVERY, AND THINKS HE MIGHT BE A BRIDGE FOR OTHER VETERANS IN NEED OF HELP. SOT INTV 01:23:42:13 B-ROLL OF VICTOR WITH MARIA 01:23:50:14 SOT MARIA WITH VICTOR VICTOR DUNGCA: I wanted to go back to combat but my doctor says no. 01:23:55:02 MARIA HINOJOSA You still want to go back to combat? 01:23:57:06 VICTOR DUNGCA: I have a different mission now. 01:23:59:10 MARIA HINOJOSA: What’s that mission? 01:24:00:08 VICTOR DUNGCA: Helping veterans. That’s my mission. 01:24:04:07 01:24:05:08 MARIA HINOJOSA And there are a lot of them on Guam. VICTOR DUNGCA: Yes. In a heartbeat. 01:24:28:13 MARIA HINOJOSA: And become a soldier. 01:24:29:15 MAGGIE AGUON: And become a soldier. 01:24:31:14 MARIA HINOJOSA: For your country. 01:24:32:21 MAGGIE AGUON: For my country, for my island.
