Advanced English 12 Syllabus
This is a fast paced British literature course. The objectives of this course are to
provide a strong knowledge of British literature beginning with the Anglo-Saxon period
and moving through the eras up to the Modern period. Included in the course will be the
study of the history of the time period, the change in language, and the different
developments in literature styles. Students will not only be expected to do individual
research but also communicate their findings through several different mediums such as
print, essays, PowerPoint, etc.
The following is a tentative schedule for the class based upon the new English 12 Pacing
guides. Activities are subject to change due to class comprehension and unforeseen
interruptions.
Week 1 - Go over student/parent/teacher contract, syllabus, take up fees,
assign books, students sign-up for summer reading presentations, begin
begin history of Anglo-Saxon period, and write in class essay on summer
reading novel.
Week 2 - Begin Beowulf and project, compare to Grendel, have three
summer reading presentations, vocabulary, and work on etymology.
Week 3 – Finish study of Beowulf and project. Test over Anglo-Saxon
period, Beowulf, and vocabulary. Continue with summer reading
presentations. Begin Middle Ages.
Week 4 – Continue Middle Ages, assign Chaucer project and essay,
read prologue, and finish summer reading presentations.
Week 5 – Finish Chaucer’s tales. Turn in project and essay.
Test over Middle Ages, vocabulary, and Chaucer’s tales.
Week 6 – Begin Arthurian literature and legend, work on webquest
research and project.
Week 7 – Complete Arthurian research and project, present findings, and
write in class Arthurian legend.
Week 8 - Begin Renaissance period, assign theme analysis, begin reading
Macbeth, and vocabulary including foreign words.
Week 9 – Finish Macbeth, turn in analysis, test over play and vocabulary
for mid-term exam.
Week 10 – Poetry group research paper, begin Restoration and Eighteenth
Century, write an in class modern satire, readings of essays and
poetry, and assign poetry terms.
Week 11 – Continue poetry group research paper, begin Romantic period,
and continue reading poetry.
Week 12 – Poetry research paper due, begin Victorian period, present
poetry research and critic presentations, and continue reading poetry.
Week 13 – Test over poetry from the previous three periods, begin
Hamlet, assign project and essay, and vocabulary.
Week 14 – Continue Hamlet, and choose modern day British novel for
literature circles.
Week 15 – Finish Hamlet, essay and project due, and Hamlet test.
Handout final exam materials.
Week 16 – begin reading modern novel, Heart of Darkness, vocabulary,
assign comparative essay.
Week 17 – finish novel and watch movie Apocalypse Now
Week 18 – essay due, review for final, and take final.
