Approved tachograph (calibration) centres
Introduction
This booklet lists Tachograph centres approved for the installation, calibration, periodic
inspection and minor repairs of Tachographs. It also lists authorised tachograph repairers
approved to carry out major tachograph repairs. Both Tachograph Centres and the
Tachograph Repair Centres are required to be approved by the Secretary of State for the
Environment, Transport and the Regions in accordance with legislation detailed at Annex B.
The booklet is maintained by The Department of the Environment, Transport and the
Regions based on data provided by its Vehicle Inspectorate. It is important to bear in mind
that, whilst the intention is to update this booklet on an annual basis, the details in it,
particularly those concerning tachograph centres and approved repairers, are subject to
change and the approval granted to a centre or authorised repairer can be withdrawn by the
Secretary of State or cancelled at their own request. The details in this booklet must therefore
be considered as indicative only.

Our national legislation allows the Secretary of State to attach conditions to his approval of a
centre and the Department's Tachograph Centre Manual sets out the conditions of approval
and operation for centres. The manual also provides further information on the Tachograph
Repair Scheme and copies of the Manual for those in the tachograph industry or for those
looking to become an approved Tachograph Centre can be obtained from the Department's
Road Haulage Division, Zone 2/24, Great Minster House, 76 Marsham Street, London
SW1P 4DR.

Appendix B
Legislation
1. The European Community recording equipment (Tachograph) regulations 3821/85 and
3314/90 is directly applicable law in all EC Member States. It deals with the construction,
testing, installation, inspection and use of tachographs. It was published in The Official
Journal of The European Communities of 31.12.85 pages L370/8 - L370/21.
2. The relevant GB legislation is contained in Section 97 of The Transport Act 1968, as
amended by:
a. The Passenger and Goods Vehicles (Recording Equipment) Regulations 1979, SI 1979 No
1746;
b. The Passenger and Goods Vehicles (Recording Equipment) (Amendment) Regulations
1984, SI 1984 No 144;
c. The Community Drivers' Hours and Recording Equipment Regulations 1986, SI 1986 No
1457;
d. The Passenger and Goods Vehicles (Recording Equipment) (Amendment) Regulations
1986, SI 1986 No 2076;
e. The Passenger and Goods Vehicles (Recording Equipment) Regulations 1989, SI 1989 No
2121;
f. The Passenger and Goods Vehicles (Recording Equipment) Regulations 1991, SI 1991 No
381.
Amongst other things, this legislation makes The Secretary of State for The Environment,
Transport and The Regions The Competent Authority in Great Britain for approving
Tachograph Centres and contains penalties for non-compliance with various aspects of the
EC Regulations. The Secretary of State is empowered to attach conditions to his approval of
Centres, which are the conditions laid down in The Department's Tachograph Centre
Manual.
3. The fees charged to Tachograph Centres are set by Regulation and detailed in the above
manual.
4. EC Regulations and copies of UK Regulations may be purchased from the Stationery
Office or through certain bookshops.
5. A free booklet, form GV 262 (Goods Vehicles) or PSV 375 (Passenger Vehicles), is
available from The Vehicle Inspectorate's Area Offices (See Appendix Ai). This explains The
EC Drivers' hours rules and the use of Tachographs, and contains a list of exemptions from
the EC Regulations.
