ANG KABABAIHAN NG MALOLOS (Women of Malolos) by Sari and Kiri Dalena
85 mins
#Error
Rating:
With Basilia Tantoco as narrator, the film dramatizes the events from 1888 to
1906 when the Women of Malolos worked for the liberation of the country and
of Filipino women. In 1888, the ladies asked the Gov General for permission to
open a night school where they could learn Spanish. Despite the objections of
the Spanish friars who saw this as a political move, the women opened their
school in 1889, inspiring Jose Rizal to write his Letter to the Young Women of
Malolos. But the school lasted for only four months because the Spanish friars
cracked down on the town’s activists. In 1896-1897, many of the women provided
food, arms, and clothes for the Katipuneros of Bulacan. During the Phil-Am war in
Feb 1899, eight of them served the first Red Cross in Malolos. In 1906, ten joined
and recruited members for the local chapter of the Asociacion Feminista Filipina,
the first women’s organization in the country. The film ends with the firm resolve
of Basilia’s barcada to continue the struggle for the complete liberation of Filipino
women of all classes.

Rating:
Tulad ng Dati follows the current exploits of the Filipino rock band, The Dawn,
composed of Teddy Diaz, JB Leonor, Caloy Balcells and Jett Pangan. During the
second half of the 1980’s, the band had risen to become the most influential
musical rock group of the time. At the height of their popularity, the leader,
Teddy Diaz is murdered. The remaining members decide to continue on with the
music but eventually disband in 1996. In 2003, The Dawn reunited. The film starts
in 2006. It revolves around the character of Jett Pangan who is nearing his forties.
Jett has lost his passion for music and life and entertains thoughts of retiring from
the band. On a fateful night, Jett is assaulted by a burglar and goes into a coma.
He wakes up with no memory of his life after 1988. He remembers that he is 20
years old and is at the peak of his career with The Dawn. Not satisfied with how
things turned out with his life, he tries to change everything back to the way it
used to be. The path he takes while finding his place in this strange new world
proves itself to be a tough, emotional, and sometimes hilarious journey.

LAST SUPPER NO. 3 by Veronica Velasco
0 mins
Rating:
Based on a true story, the film is a humorous look at the circuitous path our legal
system takes to justice. Assistant production designer Wilson Nañawa is tasked to
look for a “Last Supper” to use as a prop for a TV commercial. He finds three, but
loses the one owned by Gareth Pugeda. What happens next changes Wilson
forever as he spends the next two years entangled in bureaucracy and red tape
facing estafa and serious physical injury charges. How will this ordinary man fare
against a system he knows nothing about? Will justice prevail for Wilson? Or will
he be imprisoned for the loss of “Last Supper No. 3?”

TRIBU by Jim Libiran
95 mins
Rating:
In the darker side of Manila-by-night, “tribes” of youthful gangsters roam the
streets in search of quick fixes and cheap thrills. World-weary Tondo throbs to a
beat of hiphop and freestyle gangsta rap, and to the scents and sensations of
drugs and sex and violence. We witness this crepuscular underworld through the
eyes of ten-year-old Ebet. We follow him as he witnesses the deadly lives of teen
age gang members in Tondo and the events that lead to their explosive
confrontation.
Ebet lurks throughout the story, an enigma that is part innocent child and cynical
adult. His loyalties are a mystery, and all that is clear to us is his love for his drugaddicted mother. As the clock ticks towards midnight, guns are loaded, and knives
are sharpened. Only one thing is certain: this is a battle nobody can win.

ANG BABAE SA SEPTIC TANK by Marlon Rivera
68 mins
Rating:
Ang Babae sa Septic Tank chronicles a day in the life of three ambitious,
passionate but misguided filmmakers as they set out to do a quick pre-prod at
Starbucks, a courtesy call to their lead actress, Eugene Domingo, and an ocular
inspection of their film’s major location, the Payatas dumpsite. For their last task
of the day, they visit the dumpsite for the first time. As filmmakers gunning for
authenticity, they get excited with the ”beauty” of the squalor around them. Soon
enough, they are faced with reality as they come face to face with the real effects
of their chosen subject. Babae sa Septic Tank is a comedy about misguided
ambitions, the art of making art and the romanticizing of poverty. It is a gritty no
frills neo-realist film, a glossy musical, an over-the-top melodrama and a docudrama using non-actors.

Corruption is a process. Jestoni “Jess” Biag, early 20s, is a notorious snatcher
victimizing people in bustling streets around Quiapo Church. As a routine, he
steals wallets,
gadgets and jewelries, which he will trade for a meager amount of peso---enough
for him to
survive and to support his family. Today, Jess will be captured by the police for
snatching a
cellphone of a call center agent, Ma. Grace Rosuello (Bangs Garcia). It’s his first
time to undergo investigation. And as he goes in the process from Barangay Hall
Clinic, Police Station to the Fiscal’s Office, we will witness how human rights
violation bluntly executes, and how culture of corruption deviously perpetuates in
this chain of institutions. In the end, despite the fact of proving Jess as guilty of
committing theft, he will still get his freedom. But this freedom shackled him to a
cycle upholding the predicament of his life.

DIABLO by Mes De Guzman
103 mins
Rating:
Although old and sickly, Nanay Lusing still works by selling blankets, pillows and
mats in her small store. She lives alone in a big house up north. None of her five
sons stay with her since each has his own work and life pursuit.
Every night, Nana Lusing lies on her bed sleepless because she sees a dark figure
looming in her room. Who is this shadow? Is this the devil? Her late husband? A
manifestation of her anxieties? Or simply figment of Nana Lusing’s imagination?
Diablo is a minimalist approach to the story of mother’s journey and her sons’
eccentricities. The deliberate fashion and sparse dialogue through which the story
unravels show the ambiguity of the setting and characters, and underscore the
values of unity, love and family.

A THIEF, A KID, AND A KILLER by Nathan Adolfson
0 mins
Rating:
An unlikely bond develops between a privileged ten year old boy and his captor in
this bitter-sweet comedy thriller.
Little Maximo Rooney, bullied and ridiculed at school, arrives home one day to
find two strangers hiding in his apartment. Small-time thief Nico and his cousin
Lloyd are on the run after a bungled jewelry heist, with two corrupt detectives in
hot pursuit. Although separated by age and background, Nico and Maximo
become firm friends. But with a handful of black market diamonds at stake and
cousin Lloyd becoming increasingly twitchy, all bets are off.

Unlike the former Philippine First Lady, Imelda is indifferent towards shoes. To
her, they are fraught with the bittersweet nostalgia of childhood, one that was
marred by a difficult relationship with her shoe-maker father, Romeo. Growing
up, all of hers were handmade by him. Now a mature woman, she takes a pivotal
call from the morgue, spurring her search for the perfect pair of shoes for her
dead father. The deeper she searches for the perfect shoes, the more she finds
herself.

PANG-ALAY: ANG PAGBABALIK SA TAWI-TAWI by Nanette Matilac
71 mins
Rating:
Ang Pagbabalik sa Tawi-tawi is a dance documentary on pangalay also known as
igal and paunjalay in the Sulu Archipelago.
In 1964, against her mother’s wishes, Ligaya Fernando married Datu Punjungan
Amilbangsa. Datu Punjungan was the younger brother of Sultan Mohammad
Amirul Ombra Amilbangsa---the last reigning sultan of Sulu. The marriage
became the fulfillment of Ligaya Amilbangsa’s life mission: to document for
posterity the music, dances, and visual arts of the Sama, Badjao, Tausug, and
Jama Mapun.
Today, cultural heritage of the Sulu Archipelago have been threatened by war,
western acculturation, globalization, and disinterest in tradition. Upon her return
to Tawi-Tawi, Ligaya recalled the sacrifices and triumphs in a bygone era when
the islands had no roads and electicity; and dark nights came alive with her
dancing shadows aided by candelight.

DUNGKOY by Sigrid Andrea Bernardo
46 mins 0 sec
Who is Dungkoy?
Everybody in his community has seen him, but nobody truly knows the story of this boy.
With his short arms, he dutifully lifts his paralyzed grandmother to feed her. With his small
hands, he cleans her up. The 9-year-old boy seems too wise and mature for his age… and
for a reason. Dungkoy has taken up the role of a guardian for his 51-year-old grandmother,
Lola Nonita. This huge responsibility has forced Dungkoy to quit school.
Why were they abandoned? Neighbors can only speculate. No one knows where
Dungkoy's parents are. No one knows where the children of Lola Nonita are. The only thing
they know is that Dungkoy was left alone to deal with her grave condition. Only the boy
can understand the utterances that she “speak”. Only he can calm her down.
An abandoned child and his abandoned grandmother. He takes care of her. But who takes
care of him?
Reel Time follows the story of a boy named Dungkoy and discovers the innocent love that
an abandoned child has much to give.

Ten year old Princess wakes up at the break of dawn every day to start work. Her first
destination is the wet market nearby where she helps wash the fresh produce being sold
there. Being informally employed, she gets paid a measly five to twenty pesos.
After working the entire morning, Princess then proceeds to her second job. She gathers

and sells recyclable trash from her neighbors. Her eight-year-old brother Ando
accompanies her. He carries the heavy sack where they load the stash of scrap that they
collect from the village. They do this for the rest of the day. If they are lucky they can earn
as much as fifty pesos or a little over one dollar for their efforts.
From these meager earnings, Princess supports her three younger siblings. Usually, they
can only afford to buy some chicken skin and half a kilo of rice, which they judiciously share
and divide amongst themselves. At her tender age, Princess has learned to act as both
mother and father to her siblings. Their mother left them a couple of years ago. They never
knew their father. They are now squatting at the basement of the house of a friendly older
man they met.
Princess’s situation is not unique. With a failing social welfare system, the Philippines could
barely take care of children abandoned by their parents or orphaned for whatever reason.
They are forced to learn to fend for themselves in an unforgiving urban sprawl that can be
mean to the powerless and the disenfranchised.
Since the airing of the episode, Princess and her siblings have received overwhelming
support from the viewers of the program, with help coming from as far as the U.S. and the
Middle East. The local social welfare office has since reviewed their policies and methods
of handling cases similar to Princess and her siblings and has vowed to institute reforms. As
for the kids, they are now in the process of being admitted into a shelter and they are set
to enrol in school in the coming school year.
