Arthritis Council General Member Call Meeting Notes April 6, 2010 2:00 pm EST 1. Call to Order State Roll: States – UT, NM, MO, WI, IA, KY, FL, KS, MI; Partners – AF- National; CDC; NACDD-Mari Brick 2. January and March minutes were approved as written Action: post to website 3. CDC Update Discussion: 1.) In anticipation of May and National Arthritis Month, the CDC Arthritis Program will have an article in the April 15 issue of Preventing Chronic Disease (a CDC publication) that discusses the differences in arthritis prevalence between different ethnic and cultural groups and Caucasians. It also discusses the impact of arthritis on these different groups. The article, which you may have received in draft form, is embargoed until April 15. After that time, it will be found with links on the CDC Arthritis website as well as in the Preventing Chronic Disease journal. 2.) Jenny Hootman will give a radio interview the first week of May on healthradio.com. More information will follow to states. 3.) The second week of May the MMWR will be released which will have a brief paragraph about National Arthritis Month with the slogan Moving is the Best Medicine. Action: NA 4. AF Update Discussion: 1.) a new round of training grants will be released to the regions/chapters soon. Some of us may be called upon to act as application reviewers. Look for a note coming from the project officers but, if not, alert your project officer to your interest in acting as a reviewer. 2.) Scholarships are still available for training – talk to Mary Waterman or Jeanenne Galloway for more information. The Train-the-Trainer that was scheduled for the spring has been postponed until summer. More information will follow. Action: continue monthly updates 5. Guest Presentation – Community Tool Box: http://ctb.ku.edu Christina M. Holt, the Associate Director for Community Tool Box at the University of Kansas, provided the group with an introduction to this free public resource. An overview of the CTB: The CTB is 15+yrs old and includes real life examples e.g. success stories for every skill listed on the CTB. They are always looking for more to include. The CTB has been adapted and translated into Spanish. Check out their blog (found on homepage) for up to date discussion about CTB contents, etc. ~ TOC – use the table of contents to familiarize yourself with the resource. Here you’ll find the depth of the topics including toolkits that can be used for each section to assist in identifying trouble areas or areas that need more work. ~Solve a problem – here you’ll find the trouble shooting guide ~Using promising approaches – links to external websites and best practices ~Ask an advisor – found at the home page, you can post a question to the people behind the scenes at the CTB and find a FAQ page here too. ~Promoting interest in community issues - here it’s okay to link your web pages or websites to the CTB site or specific pages, talk to Christina about doing so. ~Influencing policy development – here they have services for the public including the CTB curriculum which contains 16 modules based upon core competencies of public health; workbooks; facilitation guides; and comprehensive assessments that are may be used as needed. ~CTB Workstation – based online, there is an informational and sharing platform for all to use including local and community as well as state level partners. 6.
